Title: Er...A Man Called Horace.
Post by: Roger Kettle on March 30, 2007, 09:54:42 PM
I tend to think of this strip as something I came up with recently. Next month, it will have been running for 18 years. God, I'm getting old.
Anyway, who's got an idea for a new character to introduce into the strip? It doesn't have to be someone who's going to appear constantly----just someone who will turn up for a daft week. This isn't really a competition but I might send a Horace original and a fiver to anyone who comes up with something I can use. (My crack legal team of 47 ask me to stress the word "might").

Wow, Roger. A great competition. My immediate thought is for an Equal Opportunities Officer from the local council. Or maybe an ice-cream van vendoor who pops up with his chimes at inopportune moments (like when a wagon train is being attacked by injuns). Also, is there an undertaker in the town? I don't suppose they have lollipop ladies...

I think you should introduce a love rival to Kitty, perhaps a showgirl in the bar where Joe works or a female masked gunslinger from a neighbouring town... a jealous Kitty could be fun! Or a hairdresser moves into town to get the gossip from everyone...

Also, what about another friend for Sam? An eagle would be good in keeping with the wild west theme, or a wolf, but I'd like to see Sam interact with Horace's horse.

And can I be the first to say...

HAPPY 18TH HORACE!!!

***Continue to entertain for at least another 18 years!***

How about a cowboy?

I'll give it some more thought.

Felicitations, Roger, Andy and Horace.

How about Horace's mum makes an appearance, dressed exactly the same as him  ;D
She could deliver him a letter personally as the pony express is having his shoes repaired or rehooved or something.

Some interesting thoughts....I'll let this run for a bit.

A "Mini Me" Horace.

A geriatric gunslinger, (a legend in his day), who can't even see.

A town marshall of squeaky clean superhero status, so rigid, anal and unbending as a stickler for the rules, he even corrects bad guys grammar.

Marlene Dietrich-style vamp who can knock guys dead with her sensuality from fifty paces.

There have been some genuinely good ideas suggested. So far, the one that really appeals is the geriatric gunslinger who's way past his sell-by date. I like that a lot.

Huh! Malc just pinched my cowboy suggestion and adapted it. This kind have thing has plagued my career!

How about an Errol Flynn character who's the world's greatest lover? He's had every woman in town and is known as the fastest drawers in the west.

It's a hoary old chestnut, but did you hear the gag about the husband who says to his wife "our milkman says he's had every woman in this street except one".

His wife says "that'll be that stuck up bitch at number seventeen"...

Thanks for that Malc...nothing beats starting off a Monday by laughing out loud....and it scared the crows off my roof who are building a monumental nest  ;D

Yes, crows are always a tough audience.

A mangy moose.

A Canadian Mountie with a bad sense of direction.

Gunpowder Pete ? he loves blowing thing up!

A tailor with big dreams ? he has his eye on Horace for his super-model

The Wright brothers ? pitching rotten duck eggs at Horace just for the hell of it.

Please remember that I have only seen Horace in book #1 and #2 ? so if these have already been done in the past 18 years please forgive me.

You're on fire, Tarky, on fire. However, I'm going to go with Malc's geriatric gunslinger. There were on or two other nice ideas and , if I use them, I promise to inform those involved.
Malc, if you fancy a Horace original and a Jack Nicklaus Scottish fiver, email me with your postal address.

Too late as always.
How about a crazed prospector - "There's gold in them thar ..."
If you already have this or a similar character, please accept my apologies.

In the early days, Fyodor, I DID have a crazed prospector who used to paint potatoes gold. Great minds, eh?

DOH!!
How about a drunken doctor (sawbones)?
You'll notice how I avoid stereotypes.

Roger, your package arrived last night. Thank you for your generosity in adding to my burgeoning cartoon collection, much appreciated.
I'm always knocked out by the care and time spent by "real" cartoonists like Andrew, brought up in the publishing tradition.
We've had many debates over the years about how to submit work, i.e. should it be meticulously inked on bristol board (like Andrew's) or can it be drawn on typing paper (like mine)?
The answer is, any way works, as long as it reproduces well.
A return package is winging its way to Roger forthwith.

Don't say thanks yet, Roger. It might be a parcel of kangaroo poo.

Bugger. Now it'll look like it was your idea.
