Title: "Getting to know me..."
Post by: Bilthehut on February 02, 2010, 08:03:18 PM
Borrowing from Diane (Getting to know you.« on: April 04, 2007, 03:09:44 PM »

What is your real first name?
Bill (I don't respond well to Billy, except from Roger)(and I've never been known as Will, especially because of my job)
Where do you live, where were you born?
Currently in the soggy climes of Dorset, having been here for the past 7 years.  Singapore
What do you do to earn a living? Do you like what you do?
Took the Queen's shilling (actually £4.65) in 1975, and only 2ish years to retirement, then I must get a real job in the outside world.  Specialities are petroleum (I can have 'pi' after my name!) and Information Systems.
I must have liked it as I've been doing it for 34 years so far.
What do you do to fulfill the artistic side of yourself?
I'm not much of an artist at all.  But I would like to give it a try once I have more time (well, at least make more time for it).
What do you do to keep fit?
Knackered knee precludes me from running anymore.  Diving season is starting soon so that will help.
Favorite junk food?
A certain make of jelly sweets (****** macht kinder froh, und erwachsinner eben so.)
What do you do to make the world better?
I would like to think that my past 34 years have played a part.  I've also helped produce two stable adults to improve the Human race - maybe they will make a difference?
What books are currently on your nightstand?
True Blood omnibus
Do you have a spouse, children, dogs, cats etc in your life?
Oh, yes. Better half for past 31 years (artistic), son (25 - he's the artistic one), daughter (23), GSD (Ziva, guess!), Burmese (Tizzy) and two Siamese (Sushi and Smorg).
Describe what, to you, would be a perfect weekend?
Having a walk in lovely weather in a pleasant countryside, enjoying Nature at it's best.  Oh, and playing on the Xbox.

And now for the serious stuff?

Who is your favourtie Beau Peep character?
The Vultures !!!
Which BP character are you most like?
The Dad Vulture
How many of the 20 Beau Peep books have you read?
I now own 17 and am reading the 5 I have just acquired. (I've also read #1, thanks to Diane)
Which is your favourite BP book?
Can't say at the moment, but #8 has some really funny 'Vulture' strips.
Have you met Roger or Andrew in real life?
Unfortunately not.  I have met Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford however.

Is that enough ammunition to make fun of??

Has the phrase "fire at will!" been heard.  It is not helpful when in the military and on the receiving end.

The Omnibus is the first three books.  I've just finished #2 (Dead in Dallas).
The first season has been on (don't remember which channel), but it is not something I would have been comfortable watching with my parents - may they rest in peace.  I enjoyed the humour though - and Sookie is hot.

I've read books 1-7 and enjoyed them all. Since I live in Dallas, Book 2 was especially fun for me. I'm from the Southern US and so I can really relate to the humor.

I started to post a clip from "True Blood" but thought it might be too much for this board.  ;)

I don't remember posting that but it does sound like something I would do.

Thank you for your resume Bilthehut - you are overqualifed for most of the jobs around here but we are looking for someone to polish Roger's golf clubs until Fyodor gets better.  You never know, it could lead to something better down the road.

How did you meet Spielberg and Ford?

I was waiting for that.  Ha.  Short version.  You can see me for about 1 second in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'.  Book burning scene in Berlin, but was actually the front of Stowe School.  As a result of my support, they got myself, my boss (CO of the Regiment and the Garrison Commander (a Brigadier) bit (and I mean really small bits) parts in this part of the film.  We were dressed as Brownshirt Officers (except for the Brigadier who became a German General).

In the part where 'Indiana' has retrieved the notebook from the girl and was pushed by media into the path of 'Hitler', I am the head to the right of him.  It was an unforgettable night of many scenes, most of which never made it to the film.  The bit where the Brownshirt (between Indiana and Hitler) pushes Indiana out of the way was not in the original script.  That Brownshirt is another British Army Lt Col who had managed to push his way in front of the enterage (mainly Equity bit actors) and accidentally nudged Harrison Ford.  He took this person aside to practice and develop the bit, as he liked the idea.  This guy then has a memorable part in the film.  My uniform by the way had been previously worn by Ian Holm (it still had his name labels in), except the boots - they were too small.

Oh yes you did, and what a good idea it was.
How many Golf Clubs does Roger own?  I can only handle St Andrews.
I am along way down the road.

I wish I could remember anything about it, but I was only 18 months old (all say "Ahh") when my family left (with me I might add).
I still have a goal to visit my birth place (BMH Singapore) although I believe it no longer exists.

I went into a bar next door to a small hotel we had booked into, and immediately some young girls started rubbing up against me. I made a hasty exit. Well, not immediately - I didn't want to appear rude.

Billthehut, I dread to ask this, as you are almost the same age as me, but were you an army brat, and if so, where did you go to school, and where in Dorset do you now reside?
Title: Re: "Getting to know me..."
Post by: Bilthehut on February 03, 2010, 07:08:54 AM
You got me. Yes, I was an army brat. Before signing up, I've lived in Singapore, Paderborn, Tidworth, Ashford, Limassol, Weeton Camp (Kirkham Grammar), Herford (Kings School, Gutersloh), Munster (Edinburgh School), Thirsk (Welbeck), Bulford, Camberley.
I now live north of Bournemouth.

I thought so. My campaign ribbons read, Malta, Cyprus (Limassol) Herford (Ulmenstrasse), Larkhill, (Wiltshire), Barme, Verden, Prince Rupert's (Wilhelmshaven) Windsor Boys (Hamm),  Blandford Forum (Dorset).

You're not one of the Surrey Billthehuts, by any chance...?

OK.  Now we're talking... When in Limassol? When in Blandford (I'm currently working from the on Dad's Army site there).

Don't know what you mean by one of the Surrey bilthehuts.  Have lived in Surrey a number of times but no relations (or  roots) there.

Have we met? I'm sure I don't owe you any money!

Forget the Surrey Billthehuts, it's a gag. Like there's anyone called Billthehut in Surrey or anywhere....  ..0

Limassol when I was little, maybe 1959 (from 3yrs to 6yrs old) Blandford Forum (Blandford Camp, mostly) from 1973 to 1975.

Title: Re: "Getting to know me..."
Post by: Bilthehut on February 03, 2010, 01:08:33 PM
See, I still take things literally.  You might have known I'd lived there (Camberley was a clue).

Limassol has changed considerably since yours and my time (1965-66).  Dad was in the UN at Zyyig Camp.

Blandford Camp will be unrecognisable now.

For Herford, read 'I lived in Enger, near Herford (1969 - remembered 'cos I was watching the moon after Neil made his 'one small step'.

I forgot to mention my dad was actually POSTED to Glasgow. I lived in Maryhill from about '67 to '69. He took me to my first day at Shakespeare Rd Primary School dressed in his full recruiting sergeant regalia (including red sash) just as the whole f*cking school was lining up to go into the building. They all started goosestepping around and I had a fight every playtime for a year.

When the first man landed on the moon I had my head in my mother's lap as she checked me for nits.

Vulture,

Split the trigram, ignore the middle one (it's a red herring), replicate the last letter of the first first one, and add 157 Stone 6.62 Pounds (in metric to the end of the last one, and you have my name.

Malc,

I didn't have that problem, thankfully, until I was sent to Kirkham GC.  I was the only one from Weeton who passed the 11+, and had a taxi ride every day to school.  The school was awful, apart form some of the meals.  When my dad was posted to Germany the following year, I was asked whether I wanted to stay at Kirkham as a boarder, or come to Germany.  There was no competition.  It was great being in schools where all the kids know what the forces were about, and the problems of making friends.  Sadly, I have lost touch with them all over time due to constantly moving around.

Sorry folks, I don't believe Malc and I have met before.

Well, it was actually Vult who was querying, Hutto, but anyways, you're both wrong. 157 stone, 6.62 lbs is a tonne, making you Bill Huttonne. A ton is 2,240 lbs, or 160 stone.

I never did like the French version.  So I shall have to change my name by deed poll (or not).  Sorry, Tarks for confusing you with Vulture.  Or should I apologise to Vulture for confusing her with Tarks?
In my defence, I was trying to reply using my phone and could not see the thread.

A tonne is a metric measurement, Vult, and therefore slightly different to an imperial ton. Nothing to do with where it comes from. Where's Mince when you need him?

Welcome aboard Bilthehut.  Sounds like you live local, so next time Roger has one of his infamous suarees on his estate in Scotland, maybe we could lift-share up there (if we're invited, of course -- they are pretty exclusive).  Did you read about last year's in the Tatler?

Malc,  4/7 were in Fallingbostel in '76.  I was an 'emelet'.

Hello, Bill and welcome! (http://users.tpg.com.au/pdcs01/wavey.gif)  I'm the other half of the 2 Scots on here who live in Australia - Malc lives in Queensland and I live in Sydney.  I've got a lot of catching up to do.  I see you've made over 100 posts already - you'll be plastered in no time.
