Title: OK, I give up..
Post by: Rob Baker on July 18, 2010, 06:06:32 PM
I've read yesterday's Horace strip a couple of time now and and am still a bit puzzled.

Is 'curtain' a Scottish slang word or is it something from the Old West?

I can't believe this happened.
When the cartoon editor first received this strip, he emailed me to ask what it was all about. I checked my own rough sketch and the second speech balloon finished with the words "track down a dangerous outlaw". When Andrew draws and letters a strip, he is listening to the radio. We can only assume that, while he was lettering this particular strip, the word "curtain" came over the radio and he simply wrote it out. Bizarre, I know, but it HAS happened before!
What is really annoying is that I told the cartoon editor all this and, after sharing a laugh, he assured me he'd fix it before publication. Aaaaargh!

 ;D ;D ;D
I thought it was just me.
This has actually tickled me! They can be sinister though, them curtains!  ;D

If you squint your eyes in a curtain way, you can make out the word outlaw within the lettering.

 ;D ;D Ooh me belly...  ;D ;D

Ahh, that explains it (sort of!).    So, this should have been filed under the 'It's always Andrew's fault'  thread.

Why is he incapable of proofreading? Surely there are not so many words that he can just check word by word afterwards.

Make him promise that every time he makes such a mistake, he has to give £100 to charity.

Well, I for one will now be using "curtain" as a synonym for "ruffian" or "thug" in everyday conversation.

For example, I went to buy some bread earlier, and I noticed some nasty-looking curtains hanging around outside the Co-Op.

Are you sure they were not hanging around inside the shop?

No, they were definitely outside. One of the curtains was still on his bicycle.

I like it.

What about drapes? Are they a better class of curtain, that say thank you as they rob you.

Earlier in the week, I emailed the cartoon editor at The Mirror, saying something like "I thought you were going to change this". I got a reply from him today. "I DID!!! I really have no idea how this got in the paper. This whole curtaingate saga is getting really spooky!"

Never mind, Roger - here's a song to cheer you up, sung by a bunch of kids wearing clothes made from some nasty old outlaws...

Do Re Mi ...From The Sound of Music (With Lyrics) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bw7lxdiL7NI#)

About 54 seconds into the song, around the "Fa" bit, watch the girl hurl something at Julie Andrews.

Shocking.

She ought to be hung out to dry with that appalling display of utter disrespect. It actually looks as though she was goaded to do so as well.

That's what happens when you wear outlaw dresses, I guess.

Come on, Chaps (especially Tom) - pull yourselves together and stop hanging around this thread.

I love resurrecting these dormant threads. It's a bit like Jurassic Park.

Massimo Taibi was a goalkeeper signed by Man Utd from Venezia quite a few years back, he ended up having a few nightmare games before being sold on. Due to certain goalkeeping howlers he was dubbed "the blind Venetian".

But remember;- if it wasn't for Venetian Blinds it would be curtains for the lot of us!
(OK, I'm looking for my coat...)
