Title: Covid19 Roll Call
Post by: Diane CBPFC on March 20, 2020, 08:04:34 PM
How is everyone doing?

Got food, Got things to do? Feeling fit? Not going stir-crazy? Being kind to those isolated with you?

My life personally is not that affected being a rural hermit in normal times; my husband's job is gone as of today - he trucks for the oilfield and oil is down to $20 a barrel so he will be home - but I like him so that's okay.

Another worry is my daughter being on a one year working holiday in New Zealand - due to come home in August - we are betting that there is a return to normalcy by then. But there is always that niggling worry that this could go on for years.

What are you guy's concerns?

We began buying extra food on each shopping from about the end of January, so we were well stocked before the toilet paper riots began. Apart from putting the bins out, we have not stepped outside our garden for a week. But we have work to do from home and some good board games, and we enjoy each other's company.

I'm working from home in complete self-isolation, and taking social-distancing to the max.

So, no change there then.

Anyone got a spare bog roll?

My wife went supermarket shopping this morning and, despite some empty shelves, returned with most of our usual weekly goods---including bread and toilet paper!
As for concerns, I have many. They range from the safety of elderly relatives to the psychological effect of isolation on society in general. Having said that, I'm an optimist. The world WILL get through this and, just maybe, it will become a better, more caring, place.

I'm at risk, having the dreaded underlying symptoms, so self isolating for 12 weeks (minimum I'm thinking).
Cancelled one trip away in April but still kept a holiday booking open in June, we shall see.
I intend to get some early morning fishing in if possible and take at least one camera out with me that's not part of a phone.
Instruction from my nursing friend is to try and be as fit as possible, I'll certainly try.
Really hope all of you get through this unscathed too, I worry about my youngest son who has MS.

Cheers all.  Max.

I'm glad the reality in some places is not the same as the media hype.

As for concerns, I have many. They range from the safety of elderly relatives to the psychological effect of isolation on society in general.

I have to confess that staying at home for months is unlikely to bother me much. The only thing I shall miss is holidaying in Albufeira. We had a holiday booked for May, but cancelled it at the start of March once we saw where things were going.

I still think many people in England are not taking social distancing seriously enough. There have been 10,000 deaths from the start of the outbreak to yesterday morning. The next 10,000 will likely die in the seven days from then. If India, Pakistan go full pandemic, 10,000 will be a daily value. And that's just more than a bit scary.

Having said that, I'm an optimist. The world WILL get through this and, just maybe, it will become a better, more caring, place.

I'm similarly optimistic. I'm also hoping people get some insight into how unnecessary schools are.

He just said he's staying home for twelve weeks.

It is a worry not being able to check in on people you normally would, to protect them from your own possible germs (I have two health issues myself). I have two young relatives with asthma doing vital jobs - city bus driver and town water plant, I worry about them, and other older ones with health issues working in vital services - nursing and electricity.  That is why this message of stay home if you can is so important, the safety of others who must go out to keep things running.

I too am hoping the world will come out the other side of this much kinder - I think so many will be thinking more of the homeless and refugees and the hungry after only a brief sense of this feeling of fragility and interconnection.

Hope you catch a big fish Max  ;D
Tarqs, i just saw that cabbages for some reason are going super cheap and are being labeled "vegan t.p." this was on Facebook, so it must be true.

This whole thing is so sad: the first 100,000 cases took about 80 to 90 days; the second 100,000 cases took 12 days; the next 100,000 cases took just 4 days.

Two to three months for the first 5,000 worldwide deaths, seven days for the next 5,000, three days for the next 5,000.

Boris Johnson has to enforce social distancing in law to deal with the irreversibly stupid.

Er, thanks, Diane, but did you intend that for Mince? He's the vegan...I'm the Vulcan.

I got this via Messenger the other day. It may be a little too soon for everyone, but perhaps not. And it summed up quite a few thoughts I'd been having quietly to myself, as well as those that Roger and Diane have expressed.

Everyone is certainly going to get a different perspective on life and the planet. It's too soon to see whether this will lead to any worthwhile changes in how we live and treat the planet.

The video would have been better had it not ended as an advert.

Well in that case, let me tell you about the time my daughter and i went camping down in southern Alberta and stopped in a town called Vulcan. Vulcan, Alberta is the only place in the world in which you can place your hand in a bronze casting of Leonard Nimoy's hand cast. L.L.A.P

The video would have been better had it not ended as an advert.

I think "ended as an advert" is a bit of an overstatement. I've watched this about a dozen times now, and shared it at least half a dozen times, and no-one has mentioned till now any reference to advertising. Nor had I actually taken any notice of the two website links shown very briefly at the end (for about 2 seconds, and not live links - I had to pause the video in order to even read them). If it was intended to be an advert, then it was superb at delivering a deeply engaging message, but absolutely rubbish at enticing you to follow that up by 'buying' something. I've followed both links now, and they belong to the artist who created the video and her partner, who appears to be an organiser of tantric events. The video has (at the time of writing) been watched nearly 17,000 times in the past four days. If they get a little business out of it, then well done. I think that's fair, given that what she's produced is thought-provoking, profound, and something that might provide a lot of hope and light in these otherwise dark times. But I do think all that most people will see when they watch it is the message.

I don't disagree with anything you said. And I enjoyed and agreed with the video's message.

Perhaps it's just the cynic in me, but I did notice the websites the first time, and followed the links and was slightly disappointed that they were for a site selling tickets to events. I wondered why the creator put in the websites at all if the message is what is important. I would have enjoyed the video more had I not been left feeling that she is using the coronavirus tragedy to further her business, even if that was not her intention.

She created something positive and uplifting. I don't begrudge her 'signing her work' or pointing to places where people can find more of it if they want to. I sign everything I draw - but not because I hope to sell more - it's more about pride and ownership. Every video 'Christmas Card' I've created over the past years have ended with my website address. Yes, I send it to business contacts as well as friends and family. I'd be hugely disappointed if anyone thought they were purely about advertising though. By that token, we all advertise ourselves every time we put our name to anything we put out in public. In this case, it may even be reassuring to know that this came from an artist and not any PR firm paid for by government or state.

And perhaps some people might even enjoy going to these events, poo-face!  :P

As I said, I was probably in a cynical mood at the time. There is also the possibility that this was created for her website and not to be sent around social media, in which case I would be wrong in my assessment of her motives, not that I might not be wrong anyway.

And seriously, would you go?  8)

Not at the moment, no. But eventually, I'll be delighted to go anywhere!

Excellent! Does that mean if we tread on the blue ants, we'll be safe?

Trying to stay a little bit positive at least, It needs to be stressed that these are cases, and not deaths. The vast majority of which will make complete and joyous recoveries (some with very little discomfort along the way, others even with none at all), and all of whom immediately become superheroes, practically invulnerable against the virus, and potentially able to enlist in the army dedicated to fighting it.

I never thought I'd become a Pollyanna, but there you go.

Everything seems bad at the moment. But the figures and statistics are there to inform and warn us, and lead us to the best solutions, no matter how hard they may be. It will take time. But soon things life will return to normal, and I hope when they do, everyone will have a greater appreciation of everything they once took for granted.

Correction: the next 10,000 took 5.5 days.

Twenty countries now have between 1000 and 5000 cases. In two weeks, I predict 10,000 fatalities a day without India and Pakistan even needing to go full pandemic.

Antarctica has zero cases.

Mind you, that's probably because they are so ice-solated.

But I predict that number is going to double day by day.

Both SWMBY and I are fine with no symptoms so far.  I managed to get our normal food items before the panic and have secreted a couple of pints of milk in the vreezer.  I've even bought some evaporated milk for emergencies and a squeezy tube of condensed milk just to remind me of compo rations.  Had enough loo rolls before the panic and have not been able to get any for the past three weeks - bought two newspapers for emergency supply.

We have been inside (or around the house) since last Wednesday (i popped out for prescriptions and food).  The daughter is also isolated but we get the occasional video chat or distance chat outside our home when she walks the hound.  She can work from home.  The son is in London and working from home but has two female hypochondriacs as housemates.  He may have to go into work at the Home Office.

Like a lot of people I am overweight and hypertensive, with BP medication that puts me at risk of more serious reaction to the virus, so am taking care.

I hope you are all doing ok and keeping safe.

On a bonus - its been sunny in Evesham the past week so my solar panels have been working overtime and earning pennies.

Good to hear you're safe and well, Bill, in these surreal times.
To pass the time, I have invented a drinking game. Every time someone on TV mentions the word "unprecedented", I have a gin and tonic. After about two hours, I keel over and wake up the following day. It makes the time fly!

Glad to see you are doing ok Bill, and I hope your tp situation doesn't get dire. I picked up a 2 pack of solar panels before all this happened - one is to power an electric cattle waterer out in a field without a power source and the other is to be mounted on my vintage campervan - not that it looks like I will be camping other than at our own place now - but maybe I can quarantine one of my family members out in it when the weather improves (12" new snow this week - wasn't going anywhere anyway)

Roger that is a very dangerous game - nobody should be listening to two hours of news at at time!

So sorry, mate. Hopefully, the effects are no worse than on recent sufferers I've spoken to---a couple of days of feeling crap, followed by a lessening period of exhaustion and a complete recovery. I know a few people with a similar medical history to yours and they've all emerged from Covid 19 in fine fettle. Be one of them, Steve!

Thanks, Roger. I appear to be doing just as you describe, and feeling very much better today, with the only lingering frustration that I have lost my taste and smell (despite being accused of never having had the former, and that the latter can only be a good thing.... before Mince beats me to it).

That aside, physically and mentally, I feel pretty much back to normal. Emotionally, I'm less certain. I've spent pretty much three days adopting the Andy Capp position on my sofa watching telly-on-demand. It started with binge-watching 'Little House On The Prairie', until I could take no more, and switched to watching the movies 'The Day After Tomorrow', 'Armageddon' and 'Deep Impact' in quick succession. Amateur psychoanalysts among you, don't hold back.... :D

Thanks, Diane. I've felt almost 100% since Saturday morning (still an irregular cough, but I think I've had that most of my life), and even my taste has mostly returned after a couple of days AWOL. But I'm still testing positive (8th day now), which is a bit annoying. Hopefully that will change soon. Watch this space...
