Title: Veggie gardens
Post by: Diane CBPFC on April 06, 2020, 09:33:30 AM
They are being called crisis gardens these days, but have been called other things in the past like Victory gardens. It is good to return to the soil in times of trouble and I think this is also a case of keeping entertained at home if this goes on all summer, Canadians are buying in their seed early this year.  The two big Canadian mail seed sellers are having super high demand - one is not taking on new customers and the other is saying orders will be late and could be short items.

I was so pleased to be able to pick up seed potatoes in my local grocery shop on Friday. We still have snow hip high in some places, so gardening is a ways off for me yet, but it was something I was looking forward to all winter, even before gardening trended so I'm glad I still will be able to do that.

We're growing a few things. I'm in charge of the red onions and wifey is in charge of everything else.

Last year, my wife planted a variety of vegetables. I'd love to say it produced a bumper crop....

Yes, some of the gardening things can cost more than buying the produce at the store - I bought a strawberry hanging basket for $15 and probably got about $2 worth of strawberries from it.  But it was nice to look at.

My potatoes did well last year I had enough to keep us in spuds for five months and that was giving about 1/3 of them away. This year we are looking into sorting out some cold storage so then I could keep more and even save my own seed potatoes.

I should put my hubby in charge of something.
