Title: End Time Movies
Post by: Diane CBPFC on April 09, 2020, 07:03:54 PM
Have any of you taken comfort in end time type movies.

I watched Matt Damon's Contagion as one of the first things I did for my prep for this pandemic and have been watching the 1975 cult classic TV series Survivors in the evenings with my hubby. However my hubby is apparently much better at surviving that the characters in the show and points out to me all the things they are doing wrong.

I remember trying to watch "The Sound of Music". Oh, how I wished the world would end.

I have always loved 'The Sound Of Music' (but I can't ever go to watch it in public now, after seeing that clip). On one of my rare foreign holidays, I spent a week in Fuschl, not too far from Salzburg, and was overjoyed to visit some of the landmarks in the film. In fact, there was a weekly screening of the movie in Fuschl for the tourists to enjoy the whole thing in the magnificently authentic setting of the Austrian Alps. I didn't go. It was patently obvious that the locals detested everything about the whole saga, and the film in particular (apparently, at the end, they're escaping the Nazis in Austria by walking across the mountains...towards Germany). I didn't want to risk their possible retribution at meal times if I'd been spotted going to watch it. The mince soup was awful enough!

Steve, the scenery in the film is, of course, spectacular and it must have been amazing for you to experience it first hand. Having said that, "The Sound of Music" is the only film I've ever walked out of, long before its finish. It was a Saturday in the mid-sixties and I had played for my school football team in the morning. (Inverness Royal Academy, innocently known as the I.R.A. at the time!) With about four hours to kill before my train home to Dalwhinnie, I decided to go to the cinema which, in Inverness, was almost literally next door to the station. I simply couldn't stomach the sickly sweetness of it. Maybe it's because, at that time, I was trying to be a cool, cynical teenager but I just had to get up and leave. So, rather than pass the time in a warm, comfortable cinema seat, I trekked around the freezing streets of Inverness for a couple of hours before catching my train.
And I'm scarred for life. I've tried to watch it on many of the occasions that it's been on TV but I've never managed. The memory of that traumatic day in Inverness still haunts me. I have no idea how it ends. I'm guessing that Julie Andrews and those insufferable children sing to Hitler and he immediately heads to his bunker.

My two daughters have currently been watching Frozen II almost daily. It keeps them quiet and allows me to get some work done. The opening music of the film has seeped past the computer programming I have been working on and burrowed into my brain. The lullaby is beautiful, but the way it segues into the film's title and then into orchestra as the camera pans across the sea is just perfection. Now my wife and girls stare at me as though I am a lunatic every time I turn up the volume for that initial two minutes.

Not until after Maria is bitten by a radioactive Austrian Pinscher, discovers she then has a multitude of super powers, makes a costume out of curtains, and wipes out the entire Nazi Panzer fleet single-handedly. I won't say any more in case you're filled with remorse now, Roger, and sit through it to the end. You'll love it!  8)

Actually, it was just a Standard Schnauzer with a cool haircut.

makes a costume out of curtains

They were drapes. Can you honestly see Julie Andrews in a mini skirt?

wipes out the entire Nazi Panzer fleet single-handedly

I mean there may have been a few more songs and mountains and not quite as many tanks, but apart from that Tarks' description is bang on.

I never really cared for it myself. Julie Andrews steals that fella away from a more age appropriate nice lady, which is pretty bad form for a nun.

I am glad I got to watch some better movies back then, mostly with my Dad as my mother nodded off sitting upright 10 minutes into films.  Some great films: The African Queen, Jason & the Argonauts, The Magnificent Seven, The Flight of the Phoenix.

Julie Andrews sings. That's bad form in itself.

All four of those are amazing films.
