Title: All The Beau Peep Strips Online
Post by: Mince on May 20, 2020, 01:59:08 PM
We wish to get all the Beau Peep strips online so that they can be enjoyed in full in chronological order but also searched by character (e.g. Beau, Dennis, Egon), by location (e.g. desert, bar, fort, parade ground) and date (e.g. 1981, 02 JUL 1987 to 27 JUL 1988).

Specifically, we are looking for volunteers to help:

    1. crop the scans into individual strip images;

    2. tag these images by character, location and date.

If you wish to help with the cropping, we can suggest suitable free programs that you can download and use, along with instructions on how to cut the scanned images into single strips.

If you wish to help with the tagging, we can explain how to do this.

Make a post here here if (a) you wish to help or (7) are just bored.

Hi Mince,

Happy to help as much as I can. I know I must look like an eager beaver but I'm (7) really bored.

I do have a modest & recent knowledge of photoshop, but unfortunately this laptop is too old/slow etc to actually run it & due to the 'circumstances', I'm not going to be going outside to upgrade any time soon. I'm happy to test the free programmes though.

Tagging, pretty much know nothing. I know what it is, and how it works as a user. I just don't know how to apply it to images.

Mince, I have already offered my services to this (Rob knows).  I reiterate my offer and loyalty to the BP Forum in this great endeavour.  I've got out to do the work - just need access to the strips (physically or digitally)

Just a bit of a late thought. I'm sure I've seen somewhere (probably the depths of this very forum), that sometimes the strips aren't printed properly. Such as out of sequence, repeat of an earlier part of the week's strip, and I seem to recall one strip where a speech bubble went awry (Something about the Nomad's kazoo?).

What are we doing with those?
Are we going to correct the errors or leave everything in it's original printed format?

I'm sure they're few and far between, so it probably wouldn't be too much to fix.

There is usually a number in the cartoon to indicate its time stamp.  It just needs Rob to detail the dates that represent a number range.

I can always try and scan in my books, separate the strips and tag them.  I do have a good scanner, photoshop and Lightroom.

I did book #1 many years ago.

I could do a few trial pages to see how big the files are and long they take to come through.

My book #1 website will there for up to three years after I pass away due to the website company direct billing my credit card. What will be the legacy arrangements for these strips?

Excellent!

I am trying out a few, but for those of you who do not want to install new software, there is a website that allows you to upload images, crop them and save them: https://pixlr.com/x/

Tagging, pretty much know nothing. I know what it is, and how it works as a user. I just don't know how to apply it to images.

That is not the tagging that I am thinking of. I want to have a database of the images that details what characters are in each strip, what locations they are set in and the date of the strip. This will be used by the website I set up to search the strips.

Rob Baker has all the strips (though I guess we could start with those in the books). He will need to agree to scan his scrapbooks and upload them to a separate forum that I shall set up. Then we just need to allocate work.

We can include that information in the database and it can show on the screen (web page) with the strip.

There is usually a number in the cartoon to indicate its time stamp.  It just needs Rob to detail the dates that represent a number range.

Each image needs to be saved with the following format (date and number): MON 15 DEC 1978 - 1790.jpg

Excellent! We can start there. I think the numbers in the books might be different from those on the original strips. You will have to ask Rob.

If by "these strips" you mean all the strips in one collection, we will need to sort out something so that they remain online even after we all kick the bucket.

Just had a little nosy onto Diane's webpage for book one.

It would appear that all the images are already, helpfully, cropped into single strips.

In that case, it's simply a matter of downloading them & saving them in the "right" format.
Am I right in saying that Peep started on Thursday, 2nd November 1978 - and ran 6 days a week, excluding Sunday. Book 1 contains the first 250 strips uninterrupted. By my reckoning, that means strip 250 was published on 20th August 1979. Can anyone confirm that that is the correct date range?

I.e. Book one contains "THU 02 NOV 1978 - 1" to "Mon 20 AUG 1979 - 250"

If so, I'm happy to take "the first watch" & download the entire first book, save them in that file type for you. I'll open each strip in a new tab to make sure I'm getting the best resolution available, before downloading.

Pixlr X - Looks simple enough to operate. Played with some of the tools. Looks like the straighten option will allow us to manually correct any pages which are slightly askew, and crop crops. Easy.  ;D

Apparently the strips in the Beau Peep books were renumbered and are different to the numbers as printed on the strips in the Daily Star.

Well, that's just jolly inconvenient.

Just had a thought - most computers display files in a numerica-alphabetical order. As such, it might be better to save the files as 00001 - DATE, 00002 - DATE, rather than DATE - 1, DATE - 2 etc.

Using the current system, the saved files will be in this sort of order:
FRI 1 APR 1979 - 345
FRI 1 APR 1983 - 1706
FRI 1 APR 1989 - 3700
...(All other FRI 1st April in year order)...
FRI 1 AUG 1982 - 1600
...(All other FRI 1st Aug in year order)...
FRI 1 DEC 1979 - 500
Then all the other FRI 1st in alphabetical order of month, then it'll repeat with FRI 2nd April and so on.

It might be better to use a five digit (As I think there's more than 10,000 individual strips?) strip number with leading 0s where needed. That way the files will be ordered as:
00001 - THU 02 NOV 1978
00002 - FRI 03 NOV 1978
00003 - SAT 04 NOV 1978
...
10000 - MON 17 JAN 1998
10001 - TUE 18 JAN 1998

Which means that the files will be saved sequentially when viewed via as saved images on a computer.

If there's a technical reason why you want them saving in the original format, that's fine. Just thought this might help keep the files organised a lot better "behind the scenes".

P.s. The dates & strip numbers I've used are completely made up, but work just the same as a real version would.

Nope. They will be displayed the way my website programming tells them to be displayed.

Fair enough, didn't know there was a technical reason.  :)

Each strip will have an entry in the database similar to the following:

DATE OF STRIP: MON 15 DEC 1992

IMAGE: MON 15 DEC 1992 - 1790.jpg

CHARACTERS: Peep, Dennis, Bidet

LOCATIONS: Barracks, Parade Ground

TAGS: Brawl, Smack, Blood

NOTES: The final balloon has a spelling mistake in it.

The website chooses the list of strips fitting a search using LINQ:

List<strips> strips = info_strips
                 .Where(x => x.Locations.Contains("Barracks") && x.Tags.Contains("Smack"))
                 .OrderBy(x => x.Date)
                 .Select( x => new strip(x.Image, x.Date, x.Notes)
                 .ToList();

And then it displays them in pages of ten or so.

Obviously it's much more complicated than that, but you get the idea.

I'm astonished all of this wasn't done at the time of creation/publication. What in blue blazes were you thinking of, Roger?  ..0

                 .Select( x => new strip(x.Image, x.Date, x.Notes)

I just noticed that I left out the closing bracket. How embarrassing! I'm surprised Tarks didn't pounce on that one and laughingly correct me.

Well, if you have nothing better to do during lock down...

And Mince, that makes a lot of sense.

Now that I have some offers to help with the work, I am just waiting on Rob Baker to see whether he is still willing to scan in the pages of strips.

Rob has all the strips cut out from the newspaper and stuck in books. He scans them in by page, so the scans need to be cut down to the single strips. Send a private message to Rob if you're interested.

Is there any problem in scanning the books and identifying each strip by the catalogue criteria mentioned on this post?
