Title: Disfigured
Post by: Mince on January 24, 2007, 12:05:45 AM
Why do all the characters in Beau Peep only have three fingers on each hand?

That's common with most cartoons. It's a natural instinct that cartoonists follow. Roger will know more...

It's my theory that the three finger cartoon hand is a legacy from the first characters to be animated, which were animals, (Felix, Oswald Rabbit, Mickey Mouse, etc) and the three fingers stemmed from a representation of paws.
The first animators and the first animation concepts then set the trend for all that came after, so each succeeding generation associated cartoon characters with three fingers, as a cross between tradition and holy writ.

I've only just noticed, and now I'm finding it hard to take these characters seriously.

Cartoonists can't count.

But alliteration is a speciality.

"If anyone asks me that question again, I'll give him a bunch of fours".
Andrew Chistine, 1989.
My guess is that it's more to do with simplicity. Cartooning is a sort of artistic shorthand (no pun intended) and it's easier---and just as effective---to use three fingers as a representation of the full set.

Can't count, and lazy with it.

LOVED the quote!

I loved the quote AND the "shorthand" remark. However, that, quite simply is what it is.

Can't count, lazy and unrepentant.

The feet are worse: only three toes.

The feet are worse: only three toes.

That balances it then...

It looks like the person selling this Beau Peep artwork also has only three fingers on each hand. The mystery deepens.
