Bartending
« on: November 18, 2008, 07:25:00 AM »
This is really an "outpourings" topic but I thought it may be my only chance to post in the Saloon Bar.

I am going to be a bartender on December 6 from 5 to 9 as a volunteer for my daughter's dance group.

Anyway, other than the sherry triffle and the toothache whiskey - I don't know much about booze and how much to put in the glasses and what they are called and if they are shaken or stirred etc

I was just wondering if you lot, who seem like experts in the field, could give me a few bartending pointers?

People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Dive for cover if a mean-looking three-legged dog enters the bar saying "Ah've come f'r the man who shot ma paw."
I apologise, in advance.

clears throat
Well, haven't YOU come to the right place!

Basically, as someone who has done a bit of bar work in his time (both sides), I have to ask a couple of questions:

Will there be draught beer and optics, in other words is it a "real" bar (do you pull a lever to dispense the beer and do the bottles of spirits hang upside down on the wall behind you?)

Or is it a volunteer-type "can" bar, where all the beer is in cans in a fridge?

It is the cans in a fridge type bar - I only need to go in 15 minutes before my turn so it can't be too hard. I just don't want to look bad if someone asks for a fancy drink. I imagine most people will want beers or wine as it is a supper and party.

The trouble with all the activities that my kids are in is that you have to do a lot of volunteer work. I worked a casino for the swim club and they want to host a swim meet in our town next spring, and moving shopping carts of groceries from the old co-op to the new one for the ice skating club for five hours on a Sunday, I am baking for the dance club, selling raffle tickets for the ice skate club, decorating a christmas tree for the ice skate club and now serving at the bar for the dance club.

It is only the karate and soccer people that give me any peace.

Golly, Diane - how do you find time to grace this board with your presence?

I've worked in a few bars over the years. Mainly in my student days, I hasten to add. I reckon I could do it again now easily enough. It'd be a bit like riding a bike, I imagine. In MY day, you didn't have tills that added up for you. You had to do it in your head. I was a bar steward for quite a few years.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

Surely even Mince wouldn't step in on that one.

Since it will mostly be beer in cans...I could say would you like it shaken or stirred or would you just like me to pass you the damn can?

I just want people to know that I could do more if called on to do so.

It does seem a bit of a waste you asking this lot when I have a publican daughter a few thousand miles down the road in Toronto! Do you want me to ask her if it's OK for me to give her email address to you?

At this point I don't care if I get fired from that volunteer post because I know I will excell at pushing the carts of groceries from the old shop to the new one and can reedeem my reputation then.  ;D

Just wear a low cut blouse, giggle and say "I've never done this before". You'll be fine.

That may work for someone like Mince - but my boobies are not that perky.

I don't think wearing a low cut blouse would help someone with the smoulderingly good looks of a scallop.

Stop it this minute Peepo; I'm only flesh and blood.
