Cartoon Women.
« on: January 12, 2008, 09:03:14 PM »
The discussion on another thread started me thinking about women characters in cartoon strips. Or, more specifically, women characters in the strips I write.
Funnily enough, in "Horace", the two strongest characters are both female---Kitty and Granny. The latter is also the most popular in the strip.
"Beau Peep" is a bit different, given the setting, and the only female to appear on a semi-regular basis is the colonel's daughter. Doris and Vera, although mentioned, are never actually SEEN.
As you all know, I didn't have anything to do with the creation of "Andy Capp" but there's no question that Flo is the strength of the whole thing and I've tried to keep that going.
I have no idea what this proves. As a man, I find it easier to write about men but, like I said, the Granny character in "Horace" is, from everything I hear, the most memorable and most-liked character in the strip.
What I need is a strong, believable, female character for "Beau Peep". Any ideas?

To balance out Dennis and the colonel, you should have a stupid, insane, "woman who knows her place". Kill off the old doctor and make her the new one.

I used to draw a strip called Attila The Nun. I think you should exclude me too.
I apologise, in advance.

Can't think why. I'm thinking of this with all seriousness! Maybe it could be a female driver of the ice-cream van. As I say, I'm just starting to consider this. I'll get back to you.

Yes, yes, yes - I can edit my previous posts to cover up my mistakes too, but it really is very childish.

Oh, I am sorry Peeps. As always, I bow to your inherent superiority. Thanks for, well, just being you.

That's okay, Tarquin.

How about a lost female deckchair attendant?

Or a girl who's taken over the job of driving the supplies wagon?

A vet! (If Sopwith's coming back, we'll be needing a veterinary surgeon too!)

OK here are my thoughts:

Hang on there's someone at the door.
