Title: What are you doing to feel Christmasy this year?
Post by: Diane CBPFC on December 23, 2008, 09:35:26 PM
What are you listening to, what are you baking, who are you being nice to?

Do you want me to find some even more morose songs, Diane?  ???

I'm cooking ham and turkey. I've got a nice breast ready for defrosting, and a piece of pork that I hope will look festive when laid on the table.

Lucy has dropped a hint about going to Midnight Mass tomorrow night. I feel I maybe ought to go with her for moral support, even though it's been organised for after the pubs are shut, (at midnight).  ..0  I'd have done it the other wat round if I was the organiser because I'm not sure if the venue has adequate toilet facilities. We'll see.

It's 10am on Christmas Eve and I'm about to embark on a series of chores - don't feel very Christmasy at all at the moment - one of which is finishing off the Christmas tree, which only went up last night.  Got a bit delayed this year, because our 14 year old lab, Ben, gave us a bit of a scare last Thursday/Friday/Saturday and collapsed, literally - couldn't get up without help.  He was at the vet for Friday night and we really thought his time had come.  Miracles do happen, cos on Saturday morning, he was up and walking again and pulling on his lead.  We got to bring him home and he has steadily improved since then - back to his old old self (as opposed to his old young self).  Must be the antibiotics and steroids he's on - could do with some myself, I think!  He does look a bit different - had a crew cut because they thought it might have been a tick that was causing the problem and they couldn't find one, so they shaved him just to make sure, poor boy!  Still, good for the hot weather, which we're actually not getting at the moment - good for tomorrow.

My daughter is behaving like a 3 year old, trying to annoy me - I have to go, will come back later.  Hubby is outside mowing the lawns at the moment - that's the trouble with here, you have to take care of the outside as well as the in at Christmas.

I'm just going to stick the Christmas cds on, just to annoy Kate - that'll learn her!  Oh, I'm being nice to the dog - that's the only one I feel like being nice to at the moment - maybe tomorrow.  We're having turkey (just the buffe type breast) with all the trimmings, pudding and I'll be having my Christmas G&T at about 11am, as things are hotting up in the kitchen, made by my well trained hubby.

If I don't make  it back here - strong possibility - have a lovely Christmas everyone, with heaps of good cheer!

My 15 year old son is annoying me like mad lately. He's been soundly spoilt by his mother and it may be too much to undo.

We went out to buy his mum some earrings last night (late night shopping after football training). He didn't want to get out of the car and complained of being sore. When he found out his girlfriend was in the mall (he got a text) he was out like a spring lamb.

I'll be down the football club tonight for drinks, then up at about 9am to get the house ready. Garden is a shambles because my next-door neighbour has gone overseas and he does my garden. Friends are coming round for lunch, kids will be in pool, more friends joining us at teatime. Hopefully I'll fall asleep on the lounge like last year.

Peeps, I am on dial up so don't participate in the U-tube part of conversations on the board.

We are going to the in-laws tomorrow for one night. Eight hour drive each way in -25c weather - we will be on the road for eight hours on Christmas day with our three kids to get home. I'm not too happy about it but trying to make the most of it to keep my husband happy.

I'm glad your Ben got better Joan.

When I look at your avatar it gives me hope as that is what I hope to be doing back home on Boxing Day - watching DVDs, flopped out on the couch.

I too hope you all have a nice Christmas.

Diane

I don't 'do' Christmassy but I do enjoy the big cook-in and the one time in the year the whole family is together and is being 'nice' to each other.

Reading the calendar, I see it says "Happy Birthday, Jesus" for 25th December. That's a nice sentiment at a time when most people are more concerned with stuffing their faces, getting drunk, eyeing up birds, and singing karaoke. (Not me, by the way.)

I've always felt sorry for people who were born on Christmas day, in effect, only having one celebration a year instead of two. It's reassuring to know that it happens to famous people too.

Just did a really Christmassy thing. Booked flights to Kuala Lumpur for next June. (Air Asia have just started a service between London and Malaysia which is great value). Going to see a bit of Malaysia, then Singapore, before moving on to the Philippines. WooHoo!

Did Christmas Day go without too many disasters, Diane?

We didn't get going until about 9:00 AM Christmas Eve and were back home by 8:30 PM Christmas Day so it wasn't that bad to leave the dogs alone - I left the three well behaved ones in the house (we have a dog door) and put all the others out in my heated kennels.  All were fine when I got home and were happy to get their Christmas prezzies.

The roads were really good - it was cold but we have got used to it now.

My kids got to spend Christmas Eve playing games with thier cousins and we did the gift thing in the morning and had an early lunchtime Christmas lunch so we could get back on the road (we usually have our Christmas lunches around 4:00 PM over here.)

Glad to be home. I am cooking a turkey today just for the five of us - with two teenage boys there won't be any wasted. I should have some more neigbours around for a few meals but I am just pooped and would like to watch movies (I bought some and Santa gave my boys some good ones) and I would like to do some mandalas.

Goodness, Diane!  I'm exhausted just reading about it!  No wonder you were pooped.  Hope you've managed to have a good rest.

An update on Ben - he was on a low dose of steroids for his skin allergies before he got sick, but the vet increased it to one every second day to help with his joints, which has made him extremely hungry (even hungrier than he used to be, which I wouldn't have thought possible).

This morning, he was left alone in the kitchen/family room for a while - big mistake!  Some silly person had left the pantry door slightly open and Ben has become adept at opening doors with his nose and body if he can get just the tip in the gap.  Another silly person (me) had left half a kilo bag of Allens red frogs (a present for John, who doesn't like chocolate - don't know where that gene came from!) lying on the bottom shelf, just at Ben's nose level.  His treats were in containers on the floor, but the frogs were obviously easier to get at.  When I came back, Ben was doing a little dance and jumping up and down like a puppy dog - great to see you so full of life, boy.  More like full of sugar and colouring, says Trevor, waving the torn empty packet at me.  :o

A picture of some Allens red frogs:

Ben ate half a kilo of them - when he was younger he would have been in the doghouse for some time, but we couldn't help but laugh, more because we're so happy he's still here to get into mischief.  He's now sleeping it off.  Someone else can deal with it when it comes out the other end!

We've got red squirrels on one thread, red frogs on this one, whatever next?

The red frogs must be an Austrailian thing - I have never seen them before.

We played my son's game of Risk 2210 with him seeing it is his birthday. It took 1 hour just to read the instructions and then about three to play the game - you can't imagine a more boring game in your life. My whole army just wanted to commit mass suicide so their general could go and take a nap - but that too is against the rules.  ..0

I guess we should be happy that a 17 year old still wants to hang out with us.  ;D

We've only ever had one dog, Kerry, and when she died it broke all our hearts so we never had another.

Kerry had two litters (my mum and dad didn't look after her) and subsequently went a little mad.

One of the funny stories we still talk about was when Kerry went surreptitiously into the kitchen and helped herself to cornflakes. Yes, she got the milk out of the fridge and...

No, seriously, she knocked the packet off the kitchen table and must have nudged it under, in and out of the chairs, until she could get her head wedged in far enough to get the corn flakes.
Having no opposable thumbs, she couldn't pull the box off, so ended up standing under the table, unable to turn her head or move backwards because every time she did so, she banged against the chairs.

We estimate she must have stood stock still like that for over an hour, effectively in "jail", with the cornflakes box jammed onto her head, until we went into the kitchen to make a cuppa and found her.

The red frogs are completely Australian, Diane, made by the same company that make Snakes, sweets in the shape of snakes, different colours, but full of sugar and colouring just like the frogs.  They now put 99.9% fat free on the packet - must think we're all dills.  99.8% sugar, no doubt.

That's really funny, Malc - any pictures?  Ben once got into a Christmas "gift" box I left in the dining room (out of bounds to him).  He nudged the lid off and managed to eat half a Christmas pudding before someone disturbed him.  He apparently ran back into the kitchen and was still chewing when they came across him.  It wasn't till later I discovered exactly what he'd been eating!

He doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects from the frogs.  Innocence itself, but there just isn't any other explanation.

Kerry once chewed a single wine gum for an hour. Every time her jaw stopped moving, we thought that was it, then, after a pause of a few seconds, she'd start up again. She used to lunge and snap at my first wife. Kerry was great.
