Anyone here on facebook? Should we have a Beau Peep facebook group?

It probably won't come as a surprise that I'm not in it----even less of a surprise that I have no idea how it works. Would it bring any more benefits than we already have here?

We get benefits......?  ???

Yes. I'm on Facebook. I still have my original 12 contacts that I started with over a year ago.  My children and grandchildren seem to have have a million contacts between them. I don't understand their 'English' and frequently have to ask for translations. I make very few posts - about two a week. I can see NO benefits with being on Facebook. Don't go there!

I totally agree with Vult, Peepsie - life is way too short!

I've been very sceptical about facebook, but I've joined, and am quite amazed at the power and scope of it. It's a social networking tool, yes, and very popular with the youngsters, but when it scanned my address book, I discovered there are numerous professionals, businesses and organisations I know that have pages.

I was invited to join the thing by young nephews and nieces, but very quickly your contacts expand, because not only do you get to have them as "friends" but you have access to all their contacts too, and it detects those that are mutual friends, or that you might know. Everyone can see what everyone else is up to, their posts, pictures, comments, etc.

I've got Lucy to join up, and very quickly she's created a vast network of filipino contacts - individuals and organisations, and it's a brilliant way of spreading the word about our new Philippines business.

Here's an Andy Capp Group (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andy-Capp/31411402618?sid=eecde6d290ca645e767b076c780a8088&ref=search) which has just under 3000 members!

I wish I hadn't looked at that Andy Capp group. There was a Sunday strip in there that I hadn't seen the final artwork for. When I sketched out the idea, Andy had a deadpan expression in the penultimate frame. Roger Mahoney has drawn him grinning at the reader and, for me, it spoils the gag completely. Don't get me wrong, Roger Mahoney is an absolutely brilliant artist and has captured Andy and the rest of the characters superbly, but he sometimes changes expressions which I felt were vital to the joke.
Anyway, back to Facebook. To be honest, it doesn't sound like anything I'd get too excited about. I have enough trouble keeping up with this place!

I've added it to my facebook page already.

I love the Facebook! I have 60 friends now - I know most of them now after I culled about 30 "friends" as I either didn't like them or didn't know them.

It is good in that you can upload photos for friends to see - even if they are not on Facebook. My family is very private and most won't go on - but there are a few of my husband's cousins.

I started a mandala art group that has over 70 people and a local news group that has 230 people - we post about registration dates for kid's sports and dance recitals etc.

I started my own gift application in February - instead of Say it with Flowers, I have Say it with Westies - there are 57 photos of my dogs being sent around the world saying "Howdy" or "Happy Birthday" by over 5000 people!

I got in touch with my old school chum from Wales - she and her husband and daughter are talking of coming over for a visit.  ;D

The only downside is that people get to see how ugly I am and of course my dial-up download speed.

Come on, Diane. Let's not have you talking negatively like that. Just tell them not to look at your picture, or post something else. It really is that simple.  ;D

I've only been on facebook for a short while, and it's like a forum, with loads of extra facilities. I know I haven't even scratched the surface of what applications there are available etc.

Anyway, how about you starting up a Beau Peep Group - merely as an appreciation society as it were, and we can see how it develops. Roger, Vulch and Pilch needn't join it if they don't want to. It would be interesting to see how it goes. The Andy Capp one I mentioned started last September, and is up to 3000 fans already.

I really must object to this abuse of the English language. First "gay" becomes a synonym of "rubbish" and now it seems that "fan" is being used to mean "sad person without a life". Where will it end?

Pilch - we should form a double-act! One straight guy, and one idiot. It'll be good me having the serious role.

You have to be careful starting groups - it is impossible to clean them out when you are done with them. I started one called; "Sad Gits with few Facebook Friends Unite" - I now have it "secret" but can't get it off of there completely. I only had three members - one a complete stranger. I wrote and told her I was closing it down - and she was crushed to be kicked out of the sad gits club.

I don't want my friends to know I post on Beau Peep so I won't be starting a fan club.

I'm on Facebook, it's how I keep in touch with my family over in the UK, and it's been really useful in digging up long lost friends.

I've started two groups, one called Editorial Cartoons by McGookin, and the Eve Cartoon Strip Appreciation Society. They have steadily attracted members, both have over 40 or 50, I'm not sure. I'm going for the slow burn.

I have to say I wouldn't have joined facebook out of choice, but I'm mightily impressed. I have more contact with extended family, long lost friends, business people, and others than I would ever have had otherwise. I've only just started exploring it as well!

I've joined both your groups now, Malc. All my contacts will see that I've joined, and may look themselves. That's the beauty of facebook - it's viral.  I wonder if Pilch has got a secret page...

I have to say that I'm mightily impressed with facebook now. I wanted to despise it and treat it as a nothing application, but it's actually wowed me.

I now have a huge host of cartoonists on my friends list, and each of them have the groups they have subscribed to displayed on their pages. Many are interesting and I subscribe to them too. That's how it works. It's phenomenal.

Great, thanks Peeps.
Actually one of the Friends on my Eve Cartoon Strip page is a syndicate editor in the States and she likes it. We were in contact for a while, she wanted to see more and discuss development, etc, but I just didn't have the time to draw speculative stuff based on someone else's suggestions that might still end up going nowhere, so I just stopped sending. Not very polite, I know. I still think Eve has potential, although not necessarily in the US syndicate's white bread world.

I tried to look you up, earlier this week, Diane, but without a surname, it's impossible. There's more than one Diane in Canada it seems.

I just realised I could enter your email address. It's YOU! You're already a friend. Lovely photo, Diane!

You call me Pilch, and Vulture, Vulch.

I think the names are endearing, and I think we should have one for you as well.

Let's see: you don't have anywhere near the brains of fresh vegetables, but I would have to concede that you might occasionally win in a battle of wits against a rotting vegetable.

So we'll call you Mulch.

Thanks for my Westiegram, Diane. I do like you picture on facebook, by the way. I also like the cake creations.

Hasn't it gone quiet on here now that so many have gone over to facebook? Mince will have no one to play his tricks on and that'll be sad. He won't have much fun just playing with himself in future.

About Mince - you have to wonder out of the 155 million people registered - just how many of them are him? There would be him and all of his friends - my guess is 500 people are Mince.

I was invited to join Facebook in August 2007 by a friend - the title of the message was "Making Facebook uncool".  At that point it was mainly students and young people and his son had told him to join, and then regretted it as all we oldies started appearing.  I don't use it that much, but I didn't realise all these groups had started up.  I found it very useful for getting messages to my friend's wife, who is a very old (not in age, obviously) friend of mine and was more technologically challenged than Roger - believe me it's possible!  She hasn't improved much, either.

Anyway, I notice Dermot's my only male friend - I've asked you to be my friend, Nigel, so you'd better accept and make that two!  ;D  You too Diane - saw you on Nigel's fan group.

I've downloaded your book, Nige, so in return you can follow me on Twitter - not that I do very much on there, but I just noticed I've only got one real person following me, and I don't know her - she's a magazine editor.  It wouldn't download the normal way, Diane.  I had to get Firefox to take it over.  Not sure what the story was, but got it in the end.  Maybe if you use a download helper like Fresh Download, it would work.

I've accepted your fan request, Joan. I've pigeon-holed you in the adoring females department.

Thanks for downloading the book. I hadn't realised it could be complicated. My downloads just open with Adobe Reader or Preview (on a Mac).

I'm on Twitter, at least I signed up on it, but now I don't have a clue what my password is, and don't take part at all, not a jot.
