I thought, rather than having a number of new topics every now and again, as Roger celebrates Dundee Utd's 3-0 win over Celtic, or Tarks celebrates being able to mock Roger as they lose 5-0 to QOTS in the cup... we could just have this one easily-avoidable topic for this season's football.
Of course, one is a number, so we'd still have a number of football topics. Except that number would only be one. Anyway.
I'm not 100% sure who everybody's teams are (please post and let me know), and the SPL didn't play today, so here's a general roundup:
- The EPL didn't play today, because they're a bunch of overpaid wussies who need an extra week's holiday.
- The SPL didn't play today, because there's only a few teams in the division, and they have to drag out the fixture list to fill most of the season anyway - an extra week's holiday isn't a problem.
- The rest of the Scottish league played though, but I'll be damned if I'm going to look closely at their results without knowing in advance if anybody here supports any of those teams. Raith Rovers hammered Partick Thistle though.
- In other Scottish football news, Middlesbrough were embarrassed at home by Ipswich.
- Bristol City were also embarassed at home by newly-promoted thugs Millwall. Never heard of Bristol's new goalkeeper before, but he doesn't seem to be very good.
- After successfully cheating the taxman the other day, Portsmouth were less successful today, losing to Coventry.
- In Australian football news, I don't know if Robbie Fowler is still playing over there.
Today's Results for forum members' teams:
Preston North End 0 - 2 Doncaster Rovers

Excellent idea, Jack. A sort of "Nothing to see here, girls and Mince" thread.
-
Splendid, Jack. You can put me down for Perth St Johnstone FC, with the occasional eye on Liverpool and Leeds United.
-
With those last two words, Tarks, you've just gone down immeasurably in my estimation.
-
It goes way back to Don Revie's day, Jack - when Leeds United were the best Scottish team in the UK.
-
I'm Man U and Celtic. Not too fussed about being a Celts fan over the last few years as they and Rangers often had the season sewn up by the end of January, it was more of a procession than a football league, but it's started to be like that in the EPL too, as a Battle of the Billionaires.
Therefore I tend to look at Kilmarnock's results at the weekend, they are actually my "local" club (as an Ayrshire boy).
-
I'm Wolves (and Margate).
-
It goes way back to Don Revie's day, Jack - when Leeds United were the best Scottish team in the UK.
What? With that odious little red haired git Billy Bremner as captain and their little sock ties with the position numbers on and the gay tassels?
They were the team that everyone outside of Leeds hated as far as I knew.
For all that, I recall some England internationals coming out of that team too.Terry Cooper, Paul Madeley, Paul Reaney,Norman Hunter bites yer legs, (Norman Scott bites yer pillow, a little 70's topical humour there) Sniffer Clarke, Mick Jones.....still hated them though.
Look out for NUFC on their triumphant return to the Premiership.
-
My mum always used to say Clarke looked like he belonged to her family. "That young boy's a Gibb" she used to say.

Ah, happy days, Calvin - thanks for that trio down Memory Lane. 'Twas never hatred - it was always envy, and any team that most of England disliked was always going to popular in Scotland, regardless of how many Scots played for them. That Leeds United could boast the red-haired (what's wrong with that?) git, alongside the likes of Frank & Eddie Gray, Joe Jordan, Peter Lorimer, Arthur Graham, David Harvey, and even Gordon (Pretty Boy) McQueen was meerely the icing on the cake.

Well, tonight was the first round of the English League Cup and the "Alba Challenge Cup" which I'm assuming is the Scottish League Cup.
Obviously, none of the top division teams played in this round, because the idea of making big teams actually beat other teams is of course ridiculous. Apparently, next year's semi-final winners will each play one of either Man Utd or Chelsea, with the winners of those game going on to the actual final.
Anyhow, a couple of shocks in the Carling Cup, as Notts Forest lost to Bradford, and Barnsley lost to Rochdale. Also, we lost to Accrington Stanley (who are they?). I'm almost glad that they scored the 93rd minute winner, because at the rate we were going, extra time would have seen us lose even more players to injury.
We already had three first team players injured pre-season, then another ended the game on Saturday on crutches, plus another two injured. Plus one suspended because he got sent off on saturday. Plus another missing because he's playing for Wales tomorrow. The bench tonight is full of youth team players.
As if that's not bad enough, another striker stretchered off tonight with what looked like it could be a long-term hamstring injury. And then our 2nd-choice right-back (who was playing in midfield, because we'd run out of midfielders) got stretchered off too.
So yes, we're out of the cup, but mostly I'll be happy if we can still field 11 players this weekend.
Oh, and for the benefit of the misguided Tarks, Scum United won 4-0.
-
Woohoo!
And don't worry about Rovers, Jack - I'll get me boots...
-
Quick point, Jack. The Alba Challenge cup is NOT the League Cup up here---it's a bizarre, contrived trophy for teams outside the SPL.
-
East Stirlingshire (The Shire) for me.
Peter Lorimer used to deliver milk or newspapers to one of my chum's mum or grannie, I think.

How sad - you'd have thought he'd have done better out of the game than that.

Ah, thanks for that. So it's like the Football League Trophy we have down here then, for teams in Leagues 1 and 2. Having never heard of it before, I'd just assumed that it was a new sponsor for the league cup.

Hope he delivered the right milk and newspapers to the right people.

1972. Last game of the season, and it was Wolves at home to Leeds. Leeds would take the title if they won, or only drew. The papers made a big story about Leeds attempting to bribe the Wolves to throw the game.
Wolves won convincingly, 2-1.
"Derby had to win and did, 1-0, but would still lose the title if Liverpool won at Arsenal or Leeds drew at Wolves. Amazingly, they didn't: on the Monday night Liverpool drew 0-0 and Wolves beat Leeds 2-1, despite allegations that Revie had bribed the Wolves players. Some managers would have waited anxiously, like family members at a hospital, but Clough was having none of that and took his family to the Isle of Scilly, where he would hear the news via the hotel phone. Meanwhile, his right-hand man Peter Taylor had taken the Derby players to Majorca where, if the water didn't always taste like it oughta, the champagne certainly did."
I've been to the Isles of Scilly twice. It's a fabulous place, by the way.

Well, the highlight of the football this weekend, for me, has to be the couple of hours that Blackpool were top of the Premiership. Shortly before Chelsea annihilated someone to surpass them.
If anybody has before/after pictures of Hearts fans from a) when they went in front in added time at the end of the first half, and b) when they conceded just a few seconds later, that'd be good. Always amusing to see people go from euphoria to despair in a matter of seconds.
We played Bristol City this week, in the battle of the Elderly Goalkeepers. They had David James (40) and we had Neil Sullivan (also 40) who was playing in his 500th League game.
We were all over them in the first half, but didn't score. Except for when we did, and David James pulled it back from yards over the line, and it wasn't given. The second half we weren't very good, we conceded straight away, but got a deserved penalty just before the end to finish the game 1-1. In typical fashion, we were totally ignored by the tv coverage, who instead decided to talk about Steve Coppell, who doesn't even work in football anymore. The BBC's match preview also said that we hadn't won our opening two games at this level in all of our 109 year history. Except we're 131 years old. Oh well.
I see Dundee Utd also got a very late equaliser. Until I looked today, I'd thought they'd lost 1-0.
Anyhow, with yet another case of a goal not being given, I was wondering where you folks all stood with regards to "goal-line technology". Personally I'm against it, because it's a slippery slope, and frankly if video evidence was brought in for that, then it wouldn't be long before people wanted to use it for offsides, fouls, and so on and so forth.
I would be happy to have a couple of extra officials though - one behind each goal. They simply spot whether the ball crosses the line, and provide an extra pair of eyes for penalty decisions if the ref wants a second opinion. Doesn't stop or slow down the game, and provides extra jobs. No need for cameras on the goal line.

I'm confident that Dundee United were saving themselves for the European tie on Thursday against EEK! ATHENS.
I'm also confident it will be our only round in the competition.
-
Wolves are in the top four. 8)
-
I see that Dundee Utd's plan to save themselves for midweek failed, as they lost in Europe in midweek, 1-0 away at Eek! Athens.
Anyhow, after you all so enthusiastically picked up on last week's discussion of the potential use of goal-line technology, I thought I'd keep it brief this week.
After last weekend saw our teams involved in a surprisingly large number of 1-1 draws, this week saw a surprising number of 4-0 scorelines.

I was hoping the football results might be glossed over this week.
-
I thought about it, but I wouldn't want anybody accusing me of only posting the scores when my own team doesn't get annihilated by a temperamental little welshman.
-
Hey!
You missed Newcastle's demolition of Villa there.
It may be early but that just might be the high point of the season.
Btw, Scum Utd vs Thugwall....funny.

St. Johnstone 1 - 0 Aberdeen
I wish! :(

Whoops! Sorry Calvin, I missed the bit in your previous post about Newcastle, amongst all the reminiscing of old times. I've added them to the list :)
St. Johnstone 1 - 0 Aberdeen

My mistake. I misread the score. Not a good week for most of our teams, I have to say. Fortunately Newcastle's massacre of the Villa helped our overall tally.
-
Apologies if any of these are incorrect. I was using the BBC site when I noticed it seems to be riddled with errors this week. It has the Man U game down as a 1-0 result, and is still previewing East Stirling's game from yesterday afternoon. Unless you go into the results section, where it says 1-0. Yet a double check on google tells me it was actually 2-0. So... yes.
It was the first Beau Peep Forum derby match this week, with Peepmaster's Wolves facing Calvin's Newcastle United. It ended a draw, but although they didn't win the game, Wolves certainly won me over with their continued determination to kick Joey Barton into the stands.

Well I didn't see it but I heard that Wolves certainly did play a gentlemanly, fair and skillful style of football.
Your point about Joey Barton brings up one of my pet peeves in the football world. While I'll never condone the stupid and vicious things Pal Joey has done in the past, it's the past. Opponents shouldn't be given free reign to kick lumps out of him, and others with similar reputations, as was inferred in Mick Mcarthy's comments afterwards. At the same time these players with reps only have to look sideways at someone to go in the book.
A yellow or red card foul shouldn't depend on who is on the receiving end, or who is commiting the foul.
Good on the referee for sending Joe Cole off a couple of weeks ago for a bad tackle. Commentators here were disputing it based on his personality.."Joe Cole's just not that type of player, no intent etc" Rubbish, it was a red caed challenge, period. Evaluate each game and each tackle on it's own merits and keep the personalities out of it
Good away point for us though.
-
Calvin, Joey Barton is a thug and, arguably, should have been banned from the game some time ago. While I have no doubt that his reputation goes before him, he just never seems to learn---on or off the pitch. I don't condone the tackles that some Wolves players launched at him but he has made an awful lot of enemies in the game and it didn't surprise me. What DOES surprise me is that he comes over in interviews as one of the more articulate footballers around. There is an intelligence in there somewhere but he hides it well in his actions.
-
No argument from me on that, it would've been justified. But since the powers that be let him back, it should be on an equal footing.
It's the genaral double standard that irritates me, there are some players in all of the leagues that get short shrift from referees and some, usually the high profile, internationals that seem to get away with murder.
-
Couldn't agree more, Calvin. There was one incident a few years back when Alan Shearer---if I remember correctly---openly stamped on an opposing player but nothing was done because he was due to play for England in the finals of some tournament.
-
Ahh now see, it would be fine if Saint Alan did that. Not that I believe for one second that he did.
Wash your mouth out with soap....*has feeling that someone was angling there*
-
I don't want to talk about it, but apparently Dundee United's Pernis was outstanding, and Goodwillie prodded home to take the honours.
Fnarrr!...
-
This has nothing to do with anything but my #2 son joined up with the American style football team in his highschool. Wouldn't even play soccer in the spring mind you and now he is on bus trips all of the Peace Region covered in bruises and having a great old time.

I'm not very clued up on anatomy, Diane. But where, on the body, is the Peace Region?
-
It's not on the body. Diane has misspelled, it's the Piece Region, and is Scotland's name for the Sandwich Isles.
-
I went to watch his home game this week. All I can say is American football is a stupid bloody game. There is non on the art, speed or beauty as in a soccer game - but instead a bunch of pushy jerks taking forever to inch their way down the field.
Maybe it will grow on me.
-
I don't think it will grow on you, Diane.
We do have an American football scene over here in very minor leagues, almost invisible to the naked eye.
You sometimes come across it by accident, a bunch of young men in full armour, running around a park, looking ridiculous.
I know a few young fellas who took it up, but they were disaffected football players who complained abput not making the top soccer teams and that football was becoming too expensive, so they basically went to take up a sport which had so many players per team they were guaranteed a game, before paying thousands for the equipment.
-
David Goodwillie, was his dad from Brodick? ;D
-
I don't expect it to last, so I must make hay while the sun shines. How's the view down there, Roger?
-
I noticed you'd edged above us, Tarks! This is shaping up to be a good old Dundee United season....
October/November---looking for a result to kick-start the season.
January/ February---looking for a result to turn the season round.
March/May---looking for a result to salvage something from a dismal season.
I hate football.
-
I love it. But with two games against Celtic this week, that could all change by next next Saturday evening.
-
Not to worry Tarks, my team softened them up for you today. ;D
-
Gee, thanks, Max - now they'll be angry! :-\
