Title: Door Knockers
Post by: Diane CBPFC on March 28, 2011, 06:37:42 AM
Door Knockers

I spent hours on eBay today looking at door knockers – trying to find one that said “this is what these people are about”.  Hundreds of them I looked at, but came away undecided.

I would like to poll you guys and ask you what you have for a door knocker and what it means to you.

No knocker, just a door bell that doesn't work :-\

Sorry, live in a block and have an entryphone.

If I did live anywhere that required a door knocker, it would have to be either a sun (my surname) or a lion (my star sign).

I have loads of door knockers.  Despite the notice, they do not use the door bell I have provided.  That's why we miss them when they call.

I'm impressed - four posts in, an no mention of Dolly Parton yet.

Until I fitted a doorbell about a year ago, we relied on a clapper (don't think it could rightly be called a knocker) thingy attached to the letterbox. But I often missed it, working as I do, at the very back of the house. Since I fitted the doorbell, I never miss a caller. I'm seriously thinking of removing it soon.

The Clapper, or the Doorbell?

Brick by Brick, or KABOOM!

It's easy to spend too much time looking at knockers on the internet, (so I'm told).

Well thank you Vulture for a constructive reply. My sun sign is the bull and hubby's is the goat - but we do raise beef calves so that could work if we went with mine. I am a dragon in the Chinese zodic and that goes more with my personality - but the dragons available are gothic looking. I was looking at local animals: Moose, deer, frogs, owls etc and was tempted to go that route. Then I like the French designs and the Greek designs. There are sure an amazing assortment of knockers.

Sounds like Diamond Lil could use an idea too.

Maybe I put this decision off for a month or so.

Coincidentally, my wife pointed out to me yesterday that we have a door knocker on our bedroom door. (I don't anything sinister was meant---it was raised as a matter of interest). We've only been living here eleven years so that's why I hadn't noticed it. I mean, I knew there was SOMETHING there but hadn't really looked at it. It's a little brass fishing boat, about an inch in size, and has the words "Looe Smack" engraved on it.  I'm guessing this is a Cornish souvenir and not some bedroom frolic practised by the previous owners.

I was born in the year of the dog (but being a female dog I have to work hard at keeping up with my reputation....!). My Chinese sign is at odds with my feline Leo sign!

People tend to just walk in on you in these parts - but one must have standards.

I saw a cute "Welcome" one and have wrote to the seller to see if they also do a "Bugger Off!" version.

Are you sure it's not "Love Shack", Roger?  :)

We don't have a door knocker, just a very loud chimey door bell which rings in all the bedrooms and kitchen (intercom). I've always been tempted to add a door knocker, but something slightly sadistic in me rather enjoys it when someone rings the bell at 11am and the kids are still in bed.

I don't think I would like a loud door bell - living where people do - they may decide to ring the bell to try to sell you Girl Guide cookies or a religion or a vacuum cleaner.

Meanwhile at Di's house...

Knock, Knock

Knock, Knock, Knock

Knock, Knock, KNOCK!

KNOCK, KNOCK!

Knock.

(drives away)

inside...

Aren't you glad we didn't buy a door knocker.  :)
