Title: Bloody Bastard Referees
Post by: Malc on May 21, 2011, 09:22:33 PM
My team lost 3-2 on Friday night.

We came back twice to level the scores at 2-2 and in the 90th minute were heading for a deserved draw against a team much higher up the table.

Then the opposition lumped the ball long to a player who was a mile offside, but the linesman, who was way behind the play, didn't flag. The player was on for goal but our keeper Jez met him on the edge of the 18 yard box, dived down and got the ball cleanly. The opposition player fell over him and a penalty was awarded and Jez was sent off.
Cobby (the spew guy from the recent photo) went in goal to face the penalty. He saved it. The same linesman who didn't see the offside then flagged that Cobby had moved forward off the line and the penalty kick was retaken, to give them the win (by that time on the 96th minute).

I'm serious when I say that I didn't sleep Friday night. I was so gutted for the team, and as someone who has refereed hundreds of games over the years I feel that these clowns have ruined not only a result, but they've ruined the reputation of referees generally. Still angry.

I sympathise, Malc, but it's not the end of the world.

As someone who can't understand the offside rule (even when demonstrated with salt shaker, pepper mill and a jar of mustard), I followed your explanation of the game ending and I feel gutted for you and your lads.  Have you seriously pissed off that ref in a former life?

How much were they paid by the other team?

Malc, my sympathies. Had those ridiculous decisions been made in my local Fife League, I can state categorically that knuckles would have been used.

Maybe you should send Knuckles over to help Malc out?

What, to wipe the tears from your eyes do you mean?

Steve, not the end of the world, no. However, you had to be there. There was an incredible sadness after the game. Spectators in tears. The goalkeeper's mother was inconsolable. It wasn't just a case of "we wuz robbed", I've been coaching for many years, all levels, I've had the very good and the very bad - this was the worst I've felt. The team punched way above its weight for the whole game, and after the final whistle the ref left straight away, and by an unknown route. He is a local guy and club members were saying he had better not be back there.

One final and very tragic note. My right back's mother sadly took her own life on Tuesday night. Her daughter found her dead in the garage, sitting in her car, exhaust fumes, hose, etc.. I'm sure you can fill in the blanks. No suggestion that she was in any way adversely affected by a football match, but her son was particularly upset on the night, and she was a lady who particularly doted on him and supported his football career avidly.

She also (of course) suffered from a mental illness, she was bipolar. It's been an awful few days to be sure.

That is so sad Malc - you don't realise how much you get tied up into people's lives when you are coaching a sport eh. Now that poor boy will always associate the bad reffing with his mother's passing - hope it doesn't make him bitter.

Tarqs was saying "not the end of the world" as a continuation of the end of the world thread whereby the world was supposed to end last Friday.

Diane's right, Malc - I was being flip, and a smart-arse as usual. But as a former player and fan of the game, especially the underdog, I did feel your pain, and then even more intensely when reading your last post.

And then it was all put into further tragic perspective by the second part of your post. I'm terribly sorry for all concerned.

Bt the way Tarqs it was LOL funny when you said it in context of the other thread.  :)

Tarks, that one went right over my head, I was reading it some days after the rupture, so the gag was lost, sorry.

The issue of the poor woman who committed suicide is (as it should be) separate from football, I do have some experience in these matters, I have a Diploma in Mental Health and I'm trained as a counsellor, having worked with many bipolar, unipolar, schizophrenic and other people over many years. I wish I had known the lady better, but she was never someone I talked to other than to tell that her son was doing great.

Awful story, Malc. In horrendous circumstances like these, I always feel desperately sorry for the daughter (in this case) who made the dreadful discovery, leaving her with an image that will live with her for the rest of her life. Every single one of us walks a mental tightrope and it can be horribly easy to make that fatal slip. Like I said, an awful story.

I've dealt with many people who have various disabilities and the worst sufferers are those with mental illness. Someone in a wheelchair can live a full life, have a job and achieve success, but someone with severe mental mental illness often is in a permanent hell, even when they are "happy" (called mania in the trade) they are only hours away from deep blackness and they may stay there for weeks.

One of the most infuriating things in life for me is to hear Scientologists offering drugs-free counselling to vulnerable people and demonizing drug therapy. Medication (and finding the right medication) is paramount in treating a lot of mental illness, along with a settled private life. The lady we're talking about was a very pretty wife and mother whose husband works in TV. You would never 'pick' her without knowing the family intimately. In many ways she was at the top of the pyramid in the sense that her home life was secure and she had a loving family, yet this still happened.
