Title: Gardening
Post by: Diane CBPFC on May 25, 2012, 12:26:20 AM
We are only just about over our frost free nights here in northern Alberta. For about 5 days now have been gardening with gusto! I have not put this much effort into it for years - I am so ground-in-dirty I don't think my hands and feet will ever be clean again  ;D

I know how you feel, Diane. After weeks of staring at the jungle that is my garden, I finally got my act together and phoned my gardener.

Who wants to see my two new raised veggie beds?

THey are 4' X 16' freshly stained and waiting to get planted.  :)

What was wrong with the old system, what was it called again...oh yes, the GROUND?

I didn't like the common old ground.

Actually there are a lot of benefits for raised beds: warm up sooner in the spring, good drainage, intense planting rather than "farmer style" rows, easier to weed - cute.

I wish I had a gardener named Gusto or Capability.

If you mean the fictional character, yes. I mean, it's about suspending disbelief, innit?

I don’t find gardening sexy. I’m covered in mosquito bites, have a farmer’s tan and my heels went to hell before I used “Heel Rescue” cream at $15 a tub. Then moving dead wood and old bricks for a few hours at a time means you can’t move much and get calluses.  You have to wonder why gardening is so enjoyable really, what with the mud and the worms and assorted bugs.

Roger and Tarqs you missed our birdhouse project my daughter and I did this weekend after the thunder storm (shown on Facebook) they were pre-built but we painted them and made the clay decorations. Now they are varnished and super-glued to posts in the garden. I had thought that duct tape was my best friend handi-women-wise, but no, it turns out super glue is tops!

Do you live in a special time zone where there are more than 24 hours in a day? :-\

Is the super-glue permanent enough? I'm worried that you'll one day have a family of dicky-birds sent crashing to the ground.

Different birds like different sized entrance holes, and the hole size depends on the species you hope to attract.

As a rule-of-thumb, I usually follow this guide...

25 mm for blue, coal and marsh tits
28 mm for great tits, tree sparrows and pied flycatchers
32 mm for house sparrows and nuthatches
45 mm for starlings
3 ft for vultures

A small box with 100 mm high open front may attract robins or pied wagtails.
A wren would need a 140 mm high front panel, while spotted flycatchers prefer a low 60 mm front to the box.

The entrance-hole for the birds in my garden is my cat's mouth.

Your wife takes her annoyances out on the cat. The cat takes its out on the birds. And the birds go for you. Sounds about right.

How big for penguins? They are all the rage right now and I would like to attract some to my garden.

If you want to attract some, I have a few chat lines to help p-pick up a penguin. ;D

I don't do gardening.  Dug too many holes in the ground already.

I wrote a script recently where the Nomad is accused of plagiarism by his publisher. He looks it up in a dictionary and decides that it's such a great definition, he's going to use it in his next book.

This is why we need a "like" button.

I just learned that the thumbs up sign is considered rude in Nigeria - something to keep in mind if you are designing a like button.

It also means 'ascend to the surface' to a diver.  'Okay' is thumb and forefinger touching, forming a circle.
