Title: Ying tong yiddle iPad
Post by: Sandy Buttcheeks on January 04, 2014, 08:48:14 PM
Who uses an iPad and tell me why I should buy one.

I've been trying not to buy one because I have serious issues about the way Apple deals with downloaded tunes. I think it would be handy for my studies, but I don't know what makes it so great.

All advice gratefully received, even if it doesn't seem like it.

I've got an iPad 2. My better half had got an iPad 3. Both her kids and mine have five iPad Minis between them.

If you tried to take just one of them away from any of the above, there would be police and paramedics involved.

Buy one!

But what do they do? My kids have got the mini ones, but when I ask them what they do, they say "everything" or "stuff".

You can surf the web, play games, watch films and tv, shop, download umpteen apps for umpteen different purposes, email, write forum posts, draw, learn, interact using social media... everything and stuff.

And you can do it all from your armchair, sitting in front of the footie on the telly, with no wires, just as I'm doing right now.

Other tablets are available, but I'm told iPads do it best.

If they do Facebook, they can f**k right off !   ;D

Can you print from them?

I believe there are several ways you can print from an iPad (Google those last four words), though I've never needed to myself.

And Facebook is available, though not compulsory.

Ok. Don't go to the Apple stores if you want help. They tell you too much.

I think "Adam" knew I was losing interest in what he was telling me when I started making faces at the iPad because it had a face-altering app. I was almost buying one until I realised there are more versions of iPad than there are episodes of Corrie.

Mibbe next week.

Head sore.

Had an iPad 2 for a couple of years now and wouldn't be without it. On BT so plenty of Hotspots around the UK for Internet and it's fantastic for travelling to the office in Holland every 5 or 6 weeks, especially with free wi-fi on the train from Schiphol.

I don't print from it but you can if you have a Bluetooth printer.

Sandy, if you've not yet used an iPad extensively, you're arguably in the fortunate position of not comparing all other similar products to Apple's finest. And therefore, you're more likely to be impressed by the many other tablets out there that compete extremely well at a much lower price, some of them offering a much closer experience to the iPad than their price might suggest.

Chief among these, according to my brother (a computer expert - it's his business) is Tesco's own Hudl tablet, which compares very favourably to an iPad Mini in performance and spec, but costs around half the price. In fact, my brother tells me he got his (using Clubcard points and other offers) for nothing, and indeed he was given a £6 'refund' when he got it. Can't argue with value like that!

Dammit, now I want an iPad. Or a Hudl.

Jesus...now there's a Hudl? I'm in a mudl.

In fact, I may be up shit creek without an padl.

As you all know technology left me behind in the land of dial-up so I know nothing myself, but I did hear that the Amazon Kindle was half the price for just as good functions.

That's the Kindle Fire, Diane, not to be confused with the Kindle, which is an excellent reader, but little else. And it's another good, cheaper alternative, I believe, if not quite as good value as the Hudl from what I've heard and read. I do think the iPad is still a superior product however, both in looks and performance, but by how much, and whether the price gap adequately reflects that, are the questions to be asked. Certainly, the answers are getting greyer as the competition hots up. I look forward to Apple's next move.

Sadly though, until you finally get your broadband, I fear very little of the above is any use to you. Fingers still crossed for you on that score.

I would just like to state, for the record, that my is iPad is the worst money I have ever spent. How the hell are you supposed to do anything with it? I wish I had bought a slate and some chalk. Apple are the devils seed. If I hadn't been so afraid of the shop assistant and all her piercings I would have said no. Only good point is that it's flat and thin. I'm off to the nearest pond to see how far it will skite.

Keech.

And relax.

As it happens this temporary (too expensive to use) hub that my internet provider provided me with is a lemon. They told me to take it back to my local store. I didn’t believe them (I have no reason to) so phoned the local store (30km round trip) first. Of course you can’t take them back to an independent dealer if they are mailed from the internet giant directly.

But the local guy told me to bring it in and he would sell me an aerial as that was more likely to be the reason the internet is on then it’s off, then it’s on then it’s off and so forth. I got a new SIM card and a big second-hand aerial – but the hub itself IS a lemon (5 business days to ship a new one to me).

The point of all this being that I spent a lovely half an hour with Tom the local guy and we got talking about me and others like me feeling left behind with “i” thingies. The long and the short of it being that he has persuaded his co-worker Kay to volunteer to come to the library for a two-hour  session on “how to use your “i” thingies and what to look for when buying an “i” thingy.

You may want to see if your library is doing anything similar – if not request that they do. If not them then the people who do Further Ed in your area (adult evening classes) may put on such a mini-course.

My main gripe is the apple software. I have a wee iPod touch which clears itself of my tunes when it syncs and it seems to me that if you don't purchase stuff from iTunes...they don't like it. I even downloaded a free Adobe PDF reader today for my spanky new iPad and the buggers still managed to muck me up that much trying to install it that I gave up. So I ended up getting a free istore thingy that loaded no probs. It seems a good device but my god they don't make it easy. An hour and a half of study time lost installing what should have taken 30secs. Swines.

If I ever get a spare half hour, I shall relay my tale of my library, the silver surfer, his iPhone and his online banking. A truly uplifting tale for those who dislike a "show off".

This might be a silly question, but why is the internet over there so expensive?

The internet can be reasonably priced, but not always reliable - in the last couple of months the customers of the most popular service provider in the area have had two towers destroyed in the record winds we have had and have been without internet for weeks at a time. This company charges $90 a month unlimited and that is reasonable as it is quite fast. They do slow it down after you reach 50GB so not great for high use of Netflix or video games.

For those of us who can't get it, we are stuck with hubs - as they know people with hubs can't get anything else - they can charge what they like. I consider $51.20 for one GB theft. It is even sadder as this giant was allowed to buy our our government run telephone system on the promise they would look after rural customers.

I am still waiting on one more wireless company who only charge $50 a month unlimited - but I had to phone them 4 or 5 times just to see if they could come here and have now waited another two weeks for them to come out. They are willing to put a 50' "pop up" on our roof so I am waiting to give them a try. If not them - then there is a satalite company that I've heard is slow but does usually connect - however we have to pay a couple of hundred dollars to find out if they can - even if they can't. They get the second chance.

There is hope - but in the meantime - this lemon of a hub is crashing all the time.
