Title: Top Gear
Post by: Mince on May 30, 2016, 09:01:09 PM
Having over the years gone to great efforts to avoid watching any episode of Top Gear (paid for I might add at great expense by the licence fee I also don't pay), I was wondering whether the new Top Gear is equally worth avoiding.

Even more so! A very, very pale imitation, I'm afraid, judging on first impressions..

I'm glad it's worth not watching. I hope the cost cripples the BBC.

The BBC is a dinosaur of yesterday and will remain so until they get rid of the licence fee that is enshrined in law.

It needs work, I agree, but as soon as you get rid of the licence fee, you also get rid of any true innovation and experimentation. Culture will plummet to the lowest common denominator, and the BBC will degenerate into yet another cheap 'popular' channel.

Other than that, fine - everyone loves to save a few quid...  ..0

I would have to disagree on two points:

1. The BBC does not have a monopoly on innovation and experimentation. Do you really need others to offer a huge list of quality programmes from Channel 4, ITV, and abroad? None of these require the antiquated threats of the licence fee.

2. Who gives a toss about the BBC? Let it go subscription and fend for itself. I'd even be fine losing Doctor Who for this to happen. Threatening and imprisoning lone housewives and the poor for doing little else than watching television makes the corporation a bunch of w*nk*rs anyway.

Like I said, it needs work.

What I didn't say was that the BBC has a monopoly on anything, but I have to say I'm struggling with the idea of "a huge list of quality programmes from Channel 4, ITV, and abroad". Can't say I'd noticed.

No, it needs abolishing. Our water company has a new chief executive, Liv Garfield, who's being paid a salary of over £1 million pounds. No one should be paid that amount of money, especially when I can't opt to receive water from another company who don't stupidly pay high wages. I say f*ck all of them: I'm damned if I'm going to line the pockets of rich people.
