Title: Watching an old 78 go round and round...
Post by: The Peepmaster on November 03, 2007, 06:58:05 PM
My Grandad used to play me this on his wind-up gramophone.
Here's side 2...

It was one of my 'jobs' as a little girl to wind up my Auntie Jean's gramophone (remembering to put the brake on first!), so she could listen to her Johnny Ray records while she got ready to go to the local 'coffee bar' that had just opened up!

Imagine how much more of an icon Johnny Ray must have been in those days compared to (say) Robbie Williams today?
It would have been the equivalent to a Roman peasant knowing his Emperor only by the imprint on a coin.
To be confronted by the real person at a concert would have been truly mind-blowing. No wonder girls screamed their socks off.

It's quite weird really - watching, and hearing the primitive sound qualities of the old wind-up gramophone, via YouTube, globally, over the internet, and realising you've lived through much of that development.
Of course, it was old wax cylinders when Roger was a boy.

It just seems to me that this board has moved from a Beau Peep Forum to one where everyone (well not really everyone) is trying to have a pop at other posters trying to bring them down. It's really starting to get annoying now and it's only really started since Peepmaster came aboard.
It used to make me giggle at times reading some of the posts - not now.
I see what some people (Peepmaster) write and I just think, what's the point.
You'll have to. He never listens to me. He acts all obsequious but there is an undercurrent of bitterness and contempt.
That's the bloke! The Tarquis of Oswestry in all his splendour.

I loved listening to the gramophone. I have an Edison -- the tall floor model. I have quite a few of the very old, very thick records, too. I think they are pre-78s. Listening to the clip of the music has motivated me to get my gramophone (sometimes people call them victrolas) fixed.

My dad had a few 78s. All I remember is a song about a train going through the middle of the house.

Note my dignified silence.

Actually, the first records I remember playing on the family gramophone were by The Chipmunks and Lonnie Donnegan. I was a child of sophisticated taste. I'm not sure about the first record I bought. I think it was an L.P. by Spike Milligan called "The Best Of Milligan's Wake". From about the age of twelve, I was into comedy albums....Milligan, The Smothers Brothers, Shelley Berman, Victor Borge, Bob Newhart. I did buy the occasional "pop" record, "Whiter Shade Of Pale" being one I can remember. Hmm. I've just recalled buying "Macarthur Park" by Richard Harris. Like I said, a child of sophisticated taste.

I bought Bob Newhart, and MacArthur Park too!
Did you like those old 78s Roger? They must have seemed funny in the olden days.

I'm starting to feel like part of this board's youth policy.

So am I, Malc. The Edison belonged to my great-grandparents!

I was 51 three days ago. Thanks for remembering.
My wife and I are going through a war of attrition at the moment, because I forgot our anniversary last week, so she deliberately bought a birthday present I didn't want ("The Eagles" DVD) and wrapped it in inside-out "Happy 21st" Birthday paper.
I'm waiting for the next opportunity, which will be Christmas, to have a go back at her. I'd really appreciate some ideas which will p*ss her off. I'm not talking about in a nice, roll-your-eyes- Terry and June way, I'm talking about a pack-your-bags-and-get-lost-you-pig way.
We'll make up later, don't worry. We haven't had an argument in eighteen years and I'm jealous of other couples who do, and who have great make-up sex.
Should I start a new thread?

Buy the DVD collection: "Ten Best War Films".

Be very worried they hold their anger for a lone time. My wife brings up thing from when we were courting that's 42 years. You will not win just give in gracefully and have a nice day

Funny, that you would remember your own birthday yet forget your anniversary - you pig! ;D
The easiest thing to do, in your situation, would be just to re-wrap the Eagles DVD.

I'd love to help but as I've been divorced for the last 28 years, I haven't had an argument for that long. (What's 'great make-up sex'?)
I can remember that my ex bought me a huge saucepan for my 21st birthday. I was so delighted that he'd remembered the date that I must have been a bit over-enthusiastic. The enthusiasm wore off when I got kitchen equipment for birthdays AND Christmas for the next ten years! It certainly p*ssed me off!

Hey, I didn't celebrate my birthday - other people did. I was confronted with little groups singing "Happy Birthday" at various junctures through the day, (at the football club, at the pub, etc). The inconsiderate bastards didn't remember my anniversary for me, unfortunately, or I wouldn't be in this mess.
