How difficult is cartooning compared to a real job? Is it more difficult than being at school?
Your answers will be used against Tarquin on another board.

In my experience, it's brilliant. I do all my work over the internet, mainly for businesses and ad agencies, so I can be based anywhere and charge London prices.
I draw using a Cintiq tablet, together with my laptop, whilst sitting in a comfy chair looking out over an extremely lovely, and ever changing scenic view of Rothesay Bay and the Clyde.
I can even work and take phone calls etc while in bed.
I'm currently doing some cartoons for a lovely young UK female celebrity who's recently been all over the cover of Hello magazine. She's a delight to work for, and every email she sends has kisses on it. One the other day had fifteen! I don't have any other client that does that.
I'm pretty sure it's got to be better than being at school. ;D

I've no idea how to answer either of those questions.
What's a real job? I guess I find cartooning easier than I would shepherding or splitting atoms. But who knows? I've never tried either.
Is it more difficult than being at school? It depends. For me, it's easier than geometry but more difficult than playing football or smoking in the bike shed---two subjects I excelled at.
Does that help?

So overall it's a doddle. That's what I thought.

You let me down, Mince. I was expecting the line "How do you shepherd atoms?"

Good point, Roger. He probably has absolutely no idea how to do that. You've caught him out there!

That's a clumsy, obvious line. I'm glad I let you down.

How clever of you to outdo Roger in the obviousness stakes. I never thought I'd agree with you, Mince, but you're right - you are an irritating oik with a blancmange for a brain

Peepmaster wrote that. I'm waiting for him to change it, but I think he has run out of ideas.

For the past 25 years, I have begun my working day at 4.30am with a ritual self-flagellation as an offering to the cartoon prophet, Carlos Brun, followed by an ice bath and my first hot cup of rust water. I then begin drawing my silly pictures, using the traditional tools of sharpened, thorned rose stems dipped in octopus ink, drawing on matured custard skin. I try to finish before Midnight, but rarely succeed. All this, for the cartoonists' minimum wage of two groats per day, as set in 1792. We are permitted half a day off a year to celebrate Carlos Brun Day. I really have no idea what kind of dream world Peepsie inhabits.

TTIII - I had no idea people were still drawing on custard skins in the digital age. It's nice to see someone keep the traditional customs alive.

Are you sure it's custard skins you're drawing on, Tarks?

Positive, Peepsie - the ones you are alluding to in your 'silly drawing' (see Mince) are not for public viewing, although the neighbours may have caught an accidental glimpse the other morning.
