Title: Today's S.T. Clue-Writing Contest.
Post by: Roger Kettle on September 07, 2008, 10:16:26 AM
Peeps, have you checked the Sunday Times clue-writing contest today? They want entries for "syllables".
I came up with "Two of them are in prison and another four are in court tomorrow". Trouble is, I think a lot of attempts will be along these lines. Any ideas?

I haven't got my paper yet, Roger. I usually walk into Rothesay to pick it up. Last night I was out singing karaoke . I think I murdered about 6 songs.

You clues are brilliant, but I think you need to add "Word has it" to the beginning.

Took me ages to work out your clue, Roger, and that's with knowing the answer, but the stunning dawn of realisation that manifested as soon as the penny dropped forced me to marvel at your ingenuity. So I'd say it's a winner - but I'm more of a Daily Sport man meself, like.

I do think Peepsie's suggestion is a good one though. Boy, that hurt!

I see what you're saying, Peepsie, but "word has it" doesn't technically work as the target word (syllables) is plural.
By the way, well done on singing half a dozen songs last night without being hooked.

I was thinking that, yes, syllables is plural, but it's a singular word, in that it's only one word. Maybe I'm wrong. Vulch and Mince will know.  ..0

Word has it that "Two of them are in prison and another four are in court tomorrow"........
Words have it that "Two of them are in prison and another four are in court tomorrow".....

I think the red is correct.

Why the quotation marks? I think it's unnecessarily complicating a simple but devious clue. I've now changed my mind, and I think Roger's original version is the best.

I assume no one wants my "silly bulls" version.

Yes - I think Roger's original is best now.

The word "ball" is in there, in reverse, so I've got "having ball back" playing on my mind. That leaves "less" and "y" to play with...

How about "Words are made up of them - I think."?

Perfect for the Daily Sport.

Or maybe "Rhymes with 'willy balls' - almost"?

New to this, actually haven't even heard of the competition.

However, how about "Greek sea monster's testes?" Scylla balls?

Or for the prudish, "Greek sea monster's spherical playthings?"

Feel free to crucify my grammar..... or even my grampa.   ;D

Or "annoying Liverpudlian chanteuse's spherical playthings". Neat.

Who is in prison and who is in court?  ???

The syllables, Diane. There are two in "prison" and four in "court tomorrow".

Okay, I got Roger's, but the rest is just gobbledygook to me - could have something to do with my being in Singapore having just done the 13 hour leg of my journey back to Sydney.  Don't like doing it this way round.  Luckily, next flight (about 7 and a half hours) gets in to Sydney in the evening, so can go straight to bed.

Back to your syllables, now.

That's clever Roger - I was thinking it was a UK band in trouble for something.

It's good to have a choice of which way round you go. I'd like to visit Singapore. In fact I'd like to see a lot more of the Far East. A younger brother of mine (an ornithologist), is working in South Korea at the moment and he sent me a link to his albums on Picasa. Definitely a place I'd like to visit. Interconnecting air travel seems so cheap there, at least from Manila, that it all seems entirely possible.

It's well worth a visit Peepsie, I've been there about half a dozen times.  Ask your brother if he's got used to 'Soju' yet..

He's talking of living there one day. He's doing ecology work, which is what he usually does in the UK. He's just finished writing a book there which I believe went to print this week. His wife is a native Korean, and she did the translation, and their young daughter is at school there while he's working. I hope he does settle there as it'll give us an excuse to fly over there while on our trips to Manila. He's currently in the city of Mokpo in the South West.

I can see why he would want to live there - sensible road planning.

I thought that. It looks like a trip back to the 1950's. I can't imagine Seoul is that quiet.

Sorry, but am I alone in thinking that the Mokpo city architects are stuck in a serious rut, and desperately need their set squares broken?

I have to agree, that city does look dreary. I like the look of this dinosaur museum though.

The clue-writing competition for the word "syllables" was won with....
Liverpool 3 Chelsea 2.
Much better and far more succinct than my effort.

Yours was excellent, Roger.

But, yep - that one's better.

That was excellent. Apart from not having "Wolverhampton Wanderers 7" as part of it.

Or "Hamilton Academicals 8", which is almost as unlikely as Peepsie's suggestion.
