Title: A Big Question.
Post by: Roger Kettle on November 19, 2009, 06:56:28 PM
I was writing a Beau series today and ducks featured quite heavily in the dialogue. During my musings, a quite baffling question entered my brain---one which I could not answer. I throw it open to you all in the hope of finding a definitive answer...
Do ducks peck?

I've thought about it a lot ( at least three minutes), and from my observations as a veteran duck/goose feeder at nearby Ellesmere lake, if a darting head motion, in order to remove various seeds from the palm of one's hand, can be considered a peck, then they certainly do peck. However, it ain't no chicken motion, nor as frequent. This is a tough one! Let me have another beer...

Do they have toe-nails?

Yes. Pet ducks peck when they want a treat. A duck's peck doesn't hurt the way a chicken's does - it's more of a tickling sensation. Ducks make excellent pets, but only if you have the time and commitment to keep them healthy and happy.

I sort of reckoned that, in order to peck, a bird needed a pointy beak thing. (As ornithologists say).

In the series I was writing, Dennis was talking about an uncle of his who tried to cross The Channel on a raft made from forty ducks, lashed together with string. The ducks' revenge in this ill-fated attempt was to involve severe pecking---but I couldn't bring myself to talk about "pecking ducks" because it didn't seem right. (You know, in an otherwise logical scenario).
And you lot think I have an easy life, churning out this stuff....

Couldn't they just bill him for the damage?
