A Beau Peep computer game is being worked on at the moment. I can't say too much as there is still a long way to go. The company involved has told me that it will be a "point and click" game, which sounds faintly pornographic to me, but I'm assured that this is a legitimate format. I guess it will be available some time next year but any previews will, of course, make their first appearance on this site. I can reveal no more. Please destroy your computer after reading this.

I bet I can write one before they finish theirs.

OK. You're on. £5 says we'll all be old and grey before you finish the programme!
-
As opposed to before he starts?

As opposed to before he starts?
Yes, there's that, too!
-
Will it be available for the Wii Roger?
-
No idea, Diane. For all I know, it might be available on Betamax.
-
I've met Roger, and he's not that Wii

Thanks, Peeps. A tad too much information...... :o
-
I stood next to him while he was having an idea for a computer game. What's disturbing about that?

The thought that Roger was contemplating anything to do with computer games.....!
-
Fair point.

I found myself with an abundance of free time this weekend, so I thought I'd practice making my own point-and-click game. Here is the result. Pretty please download it and try it, even if you're traditionally game-phobic. I'd consider it a personal favour.
I call it "Roger Kettle's Great Escape".
It's based on this topic (http://cameldung.co.uk/index.php?topic=1647.0), as well as other recent forum activities.
"Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a celebrated, award-winning writer?
Well, now you can find out, in "Roger Kettle's Great Escape!"
Take on the role of the famous Mr. Roger Kettle, as he attempts to find freedom and escape the confines of his own office! With an all-star guest cast (that's you lot, by the way), do you have what it takes to earn Roger his freedom?"
It's only a 5.8MB download, which you should be able to get here: cameldung.co.uk/games/Escape-Setup.exe
(http://cameldung.co.uk/games/Escape-Setup.exe)
If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll try to find somewhere else to host it.
I know it works on Windows Vista, but if anybody can provide feedback for other systems that would be much appreciated.
Finally, can I once again beg the luddites among you to give it a go? Thanks.
-
I clicked onto the llink, Jack, but don't understand what you have to do after that. I am always doubtful of things that say 'sign up' and 'cheap rates' .... I think perhaps the 'cheap rate' is going to cost me dear!
Perhaps I'll wait until a few others have had a go before I try again!
-
When I clicked on the link, it...er...took me back here.
-
Works fine with Windows 7, Jack. You have way too much time on your hands, but a very highly chuckleable ten minutes none the less.
It won't cost you a bean, Roger, but even once you click on the correct button, there are a few other procedures to follow before you get going. I'd wait until one of the kids comes a-calling - or my next visit.
-
Yes, that was fun, and I loved the ending: it really made me laugh.
Can I just say, Jack, that I think it's a bit low to use an internet game to parade Roger's (albeit well-known) utter inability to use a computer or indeed anything vaguely electrical or mechanical. (Remember the last time his wife asked him to wire a plug, and he telegrammed everyone with "Read Beau Peep in the Daily Star!".) And he's only just getting over the rejection letter from the Fisher Price Krypton Factor. I think making this program widely available on the forum is going too far.
Anyway, to make sure it's always available to download, here is a permanent link:

It's a bit slow!

Is the music at the end from Doctor Who?

It sounds like the Great Escape!

End? He's playing mind games now. >:(
-
Is the music at the end from Doctor Who?
Yes, it's called "Song of Freedom" and is indeed from Doctor Who.
Also many thanks for hosting the file; I know many people are wary of downloading from file-hosting sites, so I was a bit reluctant to use one. I've changed the link in my original post to the new one.
It's a bit slow!
I'm not sure if you mean the general pace, or the dialogue text? For the latter, I suspect I may have gone overboard with dramatic pauses.
Also, if you press the "ESC" button while the game is running, it should bring up a menu with an option to adjust the game speed.

Good to know, thanks :)

It's okay Roger, I'm changing the link in my sig to go straight to the file, rather than to my post. As Mince as kindly hosted the file on the site, it's just a case of clicking on the file, and following the very simple step-by-step instuctions (mostly clicking "next").
Thanks everyone who has bothered playing. As I said, I wanted to practise so I'd have been making something anyway. I thought it would at least be nice if it was something that could be appreciated by a handful of people, rather than just sitting on my computer not getting used.
-
Also, is Mince the only person who actually managed to escape the room?
-
No, Jack. It's probably NOT slow, it's just that I'm a lefty, and so's my mouse, and when you say 'click the right button' I have to work out which one that is.......!
-
Thanks Jack, very funny. I managed to get Roger out of the room. Is there more than one way of doing it, or should I not bother looking?
-
Get out of the room? Nope - didn't get that far, but I've just helped Roger get out of the blinkin' game, after a frantic phone call for help. I have to say, I was hugely impressed he'd managed to get into it in the first place, although the quivering distress in his voice indicated he didn't quite feel the same.
-
It's true. Having got into the game, I had to phone Tarks to get me OUT of it. I was hopelessly stuck and couldn't even find a way to quit the damn thing.
Sigh.
-
;D I've just escaped from the room. Brilliant, Jack - it's much better than when I tried it earlier, and you hadn't...koff!...finished it. I've half a mind to call Roger back and explain how to go beyond the initial stages. But the other half of my mind is screaming, "NO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O!!!!"
-
I assume the general advice on this site to everyone with a problem from now on is: "Ask Malc about Emma Thompson!"
-
No, Jack. It's probably NOT slow, it's just that I'm a lefty, and so's my mouse, and when you say 'click the right button' I have to work out which one that is.......!
;D I can see why that might be a problem!
I should have said "To pick stuff, press the usual button you use to pick stuff. To cycle through the actions, press the other one."
It's true. Having got into the game, I had to phone Tarks to get me OUT of it. I was hopelessly stuck and couldn't even find a way to quit the damn thing.
Sigh.
I should probably add, for everyone's benefit, that pressing "ESC" brings up a menu that lets you quit as well and other things.
I managed to get Roger out of the room. Is there more than one way of doing it, or should I not bother looking?
No, there's just the one way of doing it. :D
Thanks again to all for your kind comments.
-
I'll try again later tonight, Jack, and report back.
When I played the game earlier, I must say Diane was quite offhand with me when I phoned her. I'm not going to speak to her again.
-
Yes, I also thought Diane was offhand and annoying as well. I think Jack's captured her rather well.
-
Great stuff Jack, and very funny. Couldn't suss out how to get Roger through his office door though.
-
Very funny. I helped Roger get out of the room!
-
It froze on me at 71% download - trying again 4%... with and hour and a half approximate download time. During this time I refuse to speak to Roger.
-
I DID IT!
Well done, Jack. I can't believe the work that must have gone into that Some really funny dialogue and a great ending. Also, it was extremely nostalgic to see myself with other than grey hair.

Ah - so you didn't get to Level 2 then?

Was it Roger?
-
Very cool game. Great ending!
You’ve come a long way with your computer skills Jack since the days when we were figuring out how to post a hyperlink.
How much trouble would be for when Roger phones Diane; Diane convinces Roger that he is invisible, he goes through the door then we hear all the women screaming (don't have to see them); then Roger runs back into his office covered in lipstick?
-
85% download and the darn phone rang! >:(
Was it Roger?
No it was Peepmaster pretending to be Peter. ;D
-
Glad you enjoyed it Diane!
If it helps, when I was on Dial-up I used to use the free version of a program called GetRight (link here) (http://download.getright.com/getright-download.exe).
It's a download manager, so anything you want to download, you can use GetRight to download it and it lets you pause the download. So if you get interrupted for any reason, you can (usually) resume the download when you're connected again, without having to restart from the beginning. I found it quite useful.
Of course, you have to download it before you can use it, but on the bright side it's a smaller file than my game.
-
Thanks Jack - I will give it a whirl. ALready at 11% ;D
-
Jack, that is just great!!!...nearly didn't bother to get Roger out because I was enjoying Malc's rant so much! Clever stuff
-
Jack - my daughter had the "games" opened on my computer playing chess - I looked and Roger Kettle's Great Escape is in that section too - how clever was that!
-
how clever was that!
Oh, at least 7 million. :)
-
I've released Roger at last! What a great game Jack - and very funny too. You ought to do another one.
-
That's not very nice of you, Rob - keeping Roger stuck in his office for so long.
-
Thanks Rob.
Did anything ever come of the project mentioned in the first post?
-
I spoke to the guys involved a couple of days ago, Jack, and it's still very much on the go. I'll keep everyone up to date with anything that happens.
-
I'm posting here because:
(a) I'm curious as to whether this project has completely collapsed, or is just going really really slowly, and
(b) a couple of people have joined since I posted the far superior "Roger Kettle's Great Escape" game, and I'm officially announcing that I refuse to acknowledge Sandy Buttcheeks' existence unless he downloads and completes said game.

Ok...hands up time.
Jack, I have had the game on the laptop since 10/09/2012 (I checked the installed date!). I can confirm that within that time, I have clocked up at least 10 mins of game play (of which 5mins was probably clicking Roger back and forward just to amuse the kids). However, I reckon that this is THE best game I have ever played since I was potty trained and I hang my head in shame that I have not yet completed it...which I have to say, I did expect to do within said 10 mins.
So seeing that it is nearly the season of goodwill (only 195 days to Christmas), I am going to get back into this paragon of programming, this beauty of bytes, and I shall complete it. In fact, I am so determined now to do this game justice, that I shall complete it...to the END. So there.
Right, how do I switch the bloody Great Escape tune off?
;)
-
Right, how do I switch the bloody Great Escape tune off?
Finish the game ;)
(Actually, there might be a volume option in the menu that pops up when you press ESC, but I wouldn't swear to it.)

OK, guilty as charged melud!
Just tried to download it to iPad........nothing! :-\
Too many Internet Police on my work laptop!
iPad version anyone?
-
Draw a blocky person on a flip-book and flip through it a couple of times when you're bored. The result is pretty much the same. ;D

I exist, Jack.
I am now a member of those elite diehards that have stuck with this game through all it's levels (one, I think), that have risked epilepsy due to the high speed flashing imagery (well, Malcs laser eyes) and dabbled in the dangers of addiction to "must have" games (as in, must have been something better I could have been doing).
Did find it quite amusing and, dare I say, it reminded me of the early days of gaming. I've got a hankering to get the Amiga dusted down and get Monkey Island back out. Guybrush, where art thou...

One day soon I will get the old Commodore 64 down from the attic and try to play 'Attack of the Mutant Camels' again. Then return to reality and restart Fallout Las Vegas on the '360'.
-
Ah, how I remember these games from the tales of my father. Who could forget the qual?ty game play though...?
And you try and tell the young people of today that ..... they won't believe you. ;D
