Title: Me in the computer repair shop today.
Post by: Roger Kettle on January 31, 2011, 08:42:19 PM
Man behind counter: Blah blah...hard drive...blah blah blah...disc...blah blah blah...files...blah blah blah...memory....dongle...blah blah blah...24 hours...blah blah blah...hard drive dongle...
Me: It's a bit nippy out.

I'm still using my wife's computer and am amazed I managed to find my way here. I'm due back in the computer shop tomorrow. Should be fun.

Well just make sure you ask him how the weather is again.

Explain that you didn't go there to be ridiculed, insulted and generally treated like an idiot.

Don't forget to ask for a PC with a coffee cup holder.

Don't just stand there and let him blind you with science fella. Blind him back with a big stick.

Okay, the laptop's been fixed and I nodded wisely while the chap at the shop explained what had been the problem. "Pfff!" I said " The ol' disc-flubbit".

Don't go to him again. There's no such thing as a disc-flubbit.

No, I shall let someone else have the honour of that, Lil.  ;D

Lil, I don't know why Bilthe won't just explain it, but the "coffee cup holder" stems from a story allegedly concerning a woman who said she liked her PC's coffee cup holder, (the CD player).

Thanks for that!

Malc & Lil,  the reason why I did not explain it was because it is an 'old' IT joke, although probably true knowing that there are enough people out there who should not own a computer.  Then again, they should be as easy to use as a VCR player.

I sympathise with Bilgepump as I also thought of it as an old joke that didn't really need explaining.

But you had to finish it anyway, Malc.

I thought the same. It's become almost intertextual now.

...just another interfering do-gooder, Bilthe.

If it is any consolation - I had not heard the coffee cup holder/cd rom joke before.

Sure it's not up there with the "ANY" key computer joke but it's not bad.

In case you think you are technologically challenged, look at this old excerpt from a Wall Street Journal article...

1.  Compaq is considering changing the instruction "Press Any Key" to “Press Return Key" because of the flood of calls asking where the "Any" key is.

2.  AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to control with the dust cover on.  The cover turned out to be the plastic bag the mouse was packed in.

3.  Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes.  A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with photocopies of the floppies.

4.  A Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to FAX anything.  After 40 minutes of troubleshooting, the technician discovered the man was trying to FAX a piece of paper by holding it in front of the monitor's screen and pressing the "Send" key.

5.  A confused caller to IBM was having troubles printing documents. He told the technician that the computer had said it "couldn't find the printer."  The user said that he had also turned the computer screen to
face the printer but that his computer still couldn't see the printer.

6.  An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new Dell Computer to turn on.  After ensuring the computer was plugged in she responded, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing
happens."  The foot pedal turned out to be the computer's mouse.

7.  Another IBM customer had troubles installing software and rang for support. "I put in the first disk and that was OK.  It said to put in the second disk and I had some problems with the disk.  When it said to put in the third disk I couldn't even fit it in..."  The user hadn't realised that "Insert Disk 2" meant remove Disk 1 first.

8.  True story from a Novell NetWire System Operator:
At this point the Tech Rep had to mute the caller, because he was laughing too hard.  The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup holder.

To be fair, those weren't ALL Roger.
