Title: Time AND RELATIVE Location IN SPACE
Post by: Mince on July 16, 2007, 01:36:10 PM
Where and in what year is Beau Peep set?
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Roger Kettle on July 16, 2007, 06:40:24 PM
Originally, it was going to be set in the early 1900's but, as the years went by and the anachronisms mounted, I moved it into that wonderful place called Cartoonworld. It's any time. And it's somewhere in North Africa.

Assuming you have a Christmas strip each year, that's 29 Christmases, which must make them all much older by now. I think Andrew should start giving them at least a few wrinkles.

I refer the Honourable Member to the statement I made earlier about Cartoonworld.

Such an easy get-out clause.

Such an easy get-out clause.

Regarding Christmas, it's a Santa Get-Out Clause.
Title: Re: Time and Location

Each cartoon does not have to be a different day.
Or Chistmas does not have to be different one
Many of them could happen over one day.
As Roger says artistic licence

Trying to make sense of the get-out clause that is Cartoonworld is the road to insanity, and as we all know, there ain't no Sanity Clause.

Thanks, Groucho!

My pirate strip was set somewhere between the 13th and 17th centuries, which was a pretty big window, but still didn't allow me to use modern references, which was limiting.

Therefore no matter how general the timescale, if you are doing a "historical" strip, you are always at a disadvantage. Making Beau Peep somewhat part of the "modern" era should be liberating, but I wonder how many BP strips actually feature Game Boys, Big Brother, MP3 players, Playstation 3 or glow-in-the-dark condoms?

I do remember seeing a computer in a strip once. Rob will remember...

Was that the one where Dennis bought the 'Etch-a-Sketch' from Honest Abdul, along with the 'luminous balloons'?
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Mince on August 17, 2007, 10:43:41 AM
I also recall the one where Dennis bought a TARDIS from Honest Abdul, and totally screwed with the Space-Time Continuum. I thought that was just Roger jumping on the Doctor Who bandwagon.
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Roger Kettle on August 17, 2007, 01:22:49 PM
You and your Doctor Bloody Who. I never liked it when I was ten and I don't like it now. Although I did go through a long, multi-coloured scarf phase. (The scarf was long---not the phase).
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Mince on August 17, 2007, 01:29:50 PM
So it wasn't a TARDIS then?
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Roger Kettle on August 17, 2007, 06:27:28 PM
No, it wasn't.
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Mince on August 17, 2007, 07:02:43 PM
I'm sure it had a blue flashing light on it. Are you sure you haven't done an Honest Abdul episode where he sells Dennis (or the Nomad) a TARDIS? I think there was a Dalek involved as well.
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Roger Kettle on August 17, 2007, 07:40:58 PM
I know I'm going to regret this but why is "TARDIS" capitalised?
Title: Re: Time and Location

As well as being a fabby-dabby space/flying/time machine, it's also an acronym, Roger. And a police box.

Here you are. Notice that Honest Abdul is holding the remains of four destroyed Daleks.

That must explain why the Nomad is successful in climbing the wall with them. Mystery solved!

(I knew it!) Admit it. You're a closet Doctor Who fan.
Title: Re: Time and Location
Post by: Malc on August 18, 2007, 12:09:12 AM
The Tardis is capitalised because such a high end, state of the art, super-complicated piece of hardware could not possibly have been produced without finance from the big end of town.

I think I might delete this post later.

MORE EVIDENCE

EVIDENCE 1

Look at the umbrella held by the seventh Doctor, and then look at what is in Honest Abdul's cart.

EVIDENCE 2

Notice the similarity between Dennis and a Doctor Who Sea Devil.

EVIDENCE 3

Look in the background. They're cunningly disguised, but they're definitely TARDISes.

EVIDENCE 4

This must be the most compelling evidence of all. "Time Capsule", I ask you. It's a TARDIS.

I haven't finished yet.

Remember in this topic Roger's statement about when Beau Peep is set: It's any time.

And why haven't the characters aged over decades of Christmases? They regenerate.

Here is the doctor and the master regenerating.

He hates Doctor Who and he lives in a TARDIS. He's the Doctor's arch-enemy. He's THE MASTER!

Your secret's out, Roger. How does it feel having your identity revealed by someone who clearly needs medication?

Compelling evidence indeed, Mincey. But you have overlooked the fact that the original Master in the fictionalised account of Doctor Who was played by none other than ROGER Delgado. A delgado being an ancient Pictish iron water carrier...or kettle.  :o

Post by: Mince on August 19, 2007, 05:48:13 PM
Roger, in the new series of Doctor Who, the Master had transformed himself into a human (by placing his Time-Lordiness into a fob watch) and forgotten that he was the Master or a Time Lord.

Here's the big question: do you have a fob watch that has been with you for as long as you can remember but that you have never opened? You might be the Master without realising. (If you are, DON'T OPEN THE WATCH!)

(He has not mentioned the fob watch, so its perception filter is clearly still working. This is scarily like what happened to the Master in Doctor Who.)

Roger, do you hear the sound of drums in your head? Were you found as an orphan in a storm?

You could always try writing a new line for every thought, with capital letters beginning each line, like poetry. Oh, and no full stops anywhere. That might do it.
