Title: Introduction
Post by: colcool on December 05, 2006, 03:32:29 PM
As everybody here already seems to know everybody else, I thought I would introduce myself.

I am a comic collector of one, two, many, lots of years! And I remember this really wacky style in a certain comic produced by the Dundee Comic Tribe or DCT if you prefer...  But the comic died and no longer did that wacky style appear.  :-[

The next time I saw it, it was in a magazine that I...er...borrowed from my elder brother.  And it featured a rather enthusiastic caveman.  Needless to say, I was chuffed to little mint balls to see the wacky style back.  :D Plus, being of that age (!!) I enjoyed the art and lovely flesh tones immensely.

And then, it appeared in a national paper!  Fantastic, was my original reaction, and still is. I very rarely look at Beau without having a chuckle or a good laugh.

So that's me.  Found this site through pure fluke and just felt like adding my tuppence worth to the forum.

PS. I support a team that is even less likely to win the Scottish Cup! Forfar Athletic.  :'(

Welcome to the Beau Peep Notice Board, colcool. Exactly what was the fluke that got you here?

By the way, make sure you ask Roger Kettle tons of questions about Beau Peep. He's got nothing else to do and it keeps him out of trouble.

Welcome, Colcool---glad you could join us. It's a lot warmer in here than standing on the terraces of Station Park!

Welcome to the Beau Peep Notice Board, colcool. Exactly what was the fluke that got you here?

Somebody asked me about comics and I thought that I would use Beau Peep as an example of newspaper comics and bang! Up it came as an option.

By the way, make sure you ask Roger Kettle tons of questions about Beau Peep. He's got nothing else to do and it keeps him out of trouble.

Does questions about Caveman Ug count? As an ex-regular of "Foreigners", I happily reminisced by working my way around the walls with a glass in my hand and a snigger on my face!  ;D

Anything is warmer than standing in Station Park! Especially the bridies at half-time!  :D

Hi Colcool. Are you anything to do with the Colonel in the fort? (He's one of my favourite Peep characters). Sad, isn't it....

Hi Peepmaster, hows you?

I'm fine thanks Colin. Good to see you on the board. You realise that by using my real name, Nigel, you've destroyed the air of importance that "Peepmaster" brings...  >:(

I'd be astonished if it was Dundee, and Dundee United is Roger's (and Hamish's) team, and not Beau's.

Roger is out of the country at the moment, annplu50, but I'm sure there are those with a far more comprehensive knowledge of Beau Peep than I who may be able to help. Just not Peter.

PS   Please don't burgle Roger's house - I'm sure he's left a very big dog or two in the grounds, with no food.

Hi Ann. Dundee Utd is Roger's favourite football team. I'm not sure Beau Peep has one. I've seen Bolton mentioned in the strip, and also Hamish follows a Scottish team (could be Dundee Utd in fact.)

I'm The Peepmaster by the way. Welcome aboard.

What would we do without your great knowledge, Peepsie?

I know - we could just read the previous posts.  ::) ::) ::)

Yes, but it has added credence now I've endorsed it.

Hi folks, it's only taken 11 years but I found my way back!  ;D  I am still on the hunt for information regarding that elusive Caveman Ugg.  Now does anyone else want to admit to reading this story from way back in the early 1980s?

And Hamish is a Dundee United fan which is slyly amusing when you know that one nickname for a Dundee United fan is an Arab!

Yo, Col! Where have you been? No note from your mother, nothing!

Two possibilities spring to mind.

'Big Uggy' - caveboy character plus pet dinosaur, Dopey (Dokus...geddit?), in the Topper. Certainly around in the 70s, possibly 80s as reprints.

Or Klogg, a football-playing caveman, invented, written and drawn originally by Roger, and which I had the great pleasure and privilege to ghost in its final years. Can't recall the actual publication it appeared in (Roger?), but it was almost certainly soccer-related.

I think Col is referring to "Slug", a caveman character Andrew and I produced for  Knave magazine back in the day. There were several  pieces of original artwork from the strip adorning the walls of Foreigners bar in Dundee---a place Col confesses to frequenting around that time. The strip ran for several years and was suitably disgusting for the magazine it appeared in.
I am, indeed, a Dundee United supporter, as was Hamish in the Beau Peep strip. I vaguely recall writing a series of scripts where Beau and Dennis were playing football. Beau was pretending to be someone like Bobby Charlton while Dennis was pretending to be Sammy Davis Junior. I may have just come back from Foreigners when I wrote that.

 ;D

Ah, yes - the third possibility...probability, even. It escaped me, because I obviously never saw it in its published format...obviously!

I do recall the occasional visit to Foreigners myself back then, however, and the added pleasure of the gallery of framed cartoons on show. I even remember a beer-through-nose moment when I first saw the one involving a wishing well...  ;D

Sammy Davis Junior would have been a cracking wee tanner-ba' winger, I bet.

I followed Dennis to the bar and someone said Make Him Pay! I have been looking for him ever since!

I think Klogg kicked off in Scoop in the late 1970s or early 1980s and then got a free transfer to the Football Picture Story Monthly in 1986 along with Subbie, Ghoulie and Jon Wotson.

And thanks to Roger, we know it was Caveman Slug with his first and only appearance on the internet!  I must admit that I would laugh like a drain at the stories and I was over the moon when I saw the regular gig in the Daily Star as it was one of the first times that I was able to find out the credits for some of the work in D C Thomsons.  Andrew's style was so recognisable that you could spot it when he was doing the spot illustrations and some of the fonts.

One evening, I popped into Foreigners and noticed that someone had attached a sticker to one of our cartoons. It read "This material is offensive to women". I was deeply upset about this as my intention was to offend both genders.

Well, that was the whole point. If you'd succeeded in offending me too, I wouldn't have used the sticker.  :\
