I have set up a general knowledge tester that we can all join (its free) where we can compete with each other each day.
It's just a bit of a laugh but worth a go just to say that you are better than Mince.
Register at http://my.funtrivia.com/private/main.cfm?tid=79189 and happy quizzing.
Mince, can you sticky this at the top of the page for a wee while.
Cheers.
-
Terry Wogan?
-
Sorry, Colin. I get confused easily. I have logged on as 'terrywogan' (from another forum). I don't actually understand how it works: do you just get one go a day?
-
Terry Wogan?
Sorry...... he used to wake me up in the mornings so I could take the kids to school. I've loved him since.
-
Yes Terry, only one go a day and as you can see the categories are there for the whole week.
-
:o 8 out of 10. 666 points. 1088 seconds??? :o
-
:o 8 out of 10. 666 points. 1088 seconds??? :o
That's not your time, is it? I thought it was Colin's.
-
No, my time was 134 seconds. Just behind your 131, I believe (Terry?)
-
No, my time was 134 seconds. Just behind your 131, I believe (Terry?)
Yes. It should have been Vulture, but I put my handle from another forum by mistake. :-[
-
There's no way it took me 1088 seconds. >:(

Embarrassed about what - 9 correct answers in 98 seconds?
(How does a parrot show embarrassment?)

9 correct for me in 91 seconds ;D
-
Sorry...... he used to wake me up in the mornings so I could take the kids to school. I've loved him since
Typical - she adores the lazy bastard who wouldn't take the kids to school himself, he tapped her on the shoulder and (probably) said "git your ass downstairs roight now, and take them kids to school or ye'll git what fer!!"
Wake up indeed! That's an abusive relationship. You don't have to put up with it.
-
I don't know whether to be over the moon, or embarrassed as a parrot. 8)
Embarrassed about what - 9 correct answers in 98 seconds?
(How does a parrot show embarrassment?)
Embarrassed about knowing so much celebrity trivia, Vult. Parrots blush really bad - especially African Greys.
Colin, it was my first go, and I had to read the rules while the clock was ticking....but well done! :P

8 out of 10 again.
Not bad considering the questions were before my time... ;)
-
If the questions are too easy, I can get harder one's.
-
If the questions are too easy, I can get harder one's.
They may be too easy for you, but I found them quite difficult. Most of my answers were guesswork.
-
I stickied this, not Mince. I wanted to use my powers to the full.
-
I would have done it using my powers, but I have taken a solemn oath only to use them for good.
-
I would have done it using my powers, but I have taken a solemn oath only to use them for good.
"For good"? Does that mean "For ever"?
-
That too, yes (assuming I am indeed immortal).
-
Tarquin - our first 10. Congratulations. :)
-
I am MincyPoo by the way.
Darn dial up slows me down when it freezes.

Tarquin - our first 10. Congratulations. :)
[blush] Thanks, Vult. [/blush]

A 10 also for Diane, well done.

Ahem *bows*
Ten out of ten!!! ;D ;D ;D
My time was used up a bit as I was taken to yesterday's quiz >:(
-
Many congratulations to Mincypoo and Tom, too - very well done!

Yes, a veritable brain trust we are ? you don?t see this kind of astuteness over at the Garfield fan club.
-
I started off mediocre and went downhill from there! :-[
-
Oh
My
Goodness!!!
:o :o :o
Ten out of ten again!!!
I thought that one was quite difficult. :-[
-
You did really well, again! Today's quiz was difficult, which was why I was surprised to get the score I did.
-
I actually thought it was hard too and was surprised to get 6 correct.

Tom, I've just had a look at your score - that's perfectly respectable; what's your problem?
-
Just disappointed, I suppose. I expected another ten ::)!!

I think you're right with that, Vulture! :)

Tom! I'd done so well and you knocked me of my pedestal - how could you? :'( (Terry)
-
9 again for me today :(

Tom! I'd done so well and you knocked me of my pedestal - how could you? :'( (Terry)

-
Goodness - is that a record? Three '10's and Tarquin got his in 60 seconds.
-
And I was standing on one leg.
-
Today's music quiz should get a plethora of 10's - I know absolutely nothing about music and I managed 8 totally through guesswork. ;)
-
I'm not particularly good with music, but I got eight too! :)

Tom, are we going to win by default? :D

two of my answers never registered got 6 but should have got 8

Yes!

I didn't do very well today (5).
I think the questions could be made a bit more difficult, what do you think?
There is an option in the control panel where you can vary the questions.

I didn't do too bad today. I had to guess some though (but got them wrong ;D !!!)

It's Mince's fault. I had a sentence typed out, then I couldn't work out where the comma went and changed it. I obviously didn't proofread properly.
I don't mind you pointing out my mistakes, Peter, 'coz we oldies understand senior moments. It's when young flibbertigibbets come on with their grand grammatical ways, making me feel as though I'm past it...... well, he'll be old one day.... :D

Music. ::)

Got 6 right today and every one was a complete guess except the piano

Hey, that's not fair. I've just seen that I took over a thousand seconds to do my quiz. The site cut out on me and, when I was able to get back, I had to do the whole thing again. It looks as though they kept the timer going through both tries. :( ??? :( ???

Can you change it for something easy - and British? Lots of them seem to be USA orientated and I'm not too clued up on American stuff! ??? ???

No, I think it should stay as it is... there's no music category this week (I think!) but just because I don't like music questions, it doesn't mean everybody doesn't. Besides, it gives me something to have a little moan about ;D!
-
Diane MincyPoo - a perfect 10 (Bo Derek, eat your heart out), in an astonishing 54 seconds today, with Colin just missing out on 9 at 56 seconds. We are not worthy, guys and gals!

Thank you for noticing TTIII :)

Not everyone gets the same questions on the same day.
This was copied from the admin page.
Cheat Prevention
It is easy for players to cheat if all players get identical questions each day. They can simply by use multiple accounts or share answers with friends. Our cheat prevention works by giving all players playing in a day slightly differenty questions. Over time, all players will get the same questions, keeping competition fair.
NOTE Cheat prevention does NOT work for custom categories. Please use regular, default categories if you are having problems with cheating in your tournament.
Do you want cheat prevention turned on?
Yes, give all players slightly different questions, if I am using a default category.
No, give all players identical questions.

I jusy copied it.
You don't expect me to read it too, do you?

Thanks, Colin, that explains a lot, not least Tom's reference to "the question about the clarinet ligature", which has so far escaped me.
I'm not sure i wouldn't prefer knowing we all have to face the same questions every day though - surely none of us would even consider attempting to cheat in any way, shape or form? Where's the trust these days?
-
I could certainly change it so that we all get the same questions.
-
Let's vote on it. I get four votes because I said it first. I say change it, but if anyone is caught cheating they are expelled.
-
Done.
It's been changed so that we all get the same questions.
I think the 4 votes you had swayed it.
-
I won't enter the competitions. I'll keep getting high marks and everyone will accuse me of cheating.

Yeah, yeah - that's what they all say.

I assume you mean "geniuses".

Scaredy-cat wusses, actually.

Ah... Peter's grand piano question comment now makes sense to me too! ;D

Oh, Diane - you must have blinked today! 8) :-*
-
I sure wish I hadn't taken the time to sing all eight verses of O Canada, as is my daily custom, before answering the questions as I only lost by 2 seconds today. ;D
-
Well, I'm usually the first to enter the competition each morning, and for a few short hours I'm the winner! :D :D :D :D
-
Ach - I sang 'Flower Of Scotland' twice, whilst flogging myself with a bouquet of thistles. 8)

You beat me to it this morning, Tom. Couldn't you sleep?
.... and Tarquin.... usually, nobody else gets on until about lunchtime. :D

It seems we all got 10/10 today.
Just so happens that I was the quickest.

Congratulations, Mincypoo!
-
10 wins for me and I only came in 4th >:(
Congrats to the winner ;D
Now for this month.
-
Thank you so much, what a fantastic cake TTIII ;D
Firstly, I would like to thank Juan Valdez my personal coffee picker. I would like to thank my dogs for not chewing up my phone lines this month. I would like to thank Colin for changing the categories from UK football. Lastly, I would like to thank God for inventing multiple choice answers for without them I wouldn't have stood a chance.
Play on peepsters, play on. ;D
-
Can we have some easy peasy questions...? My head hurts after this last lot... :o :( >:( ??? :P ::)
-
I guess today wasn't my best.
-
Good time though, Colin! ;D
-
I wouldn't have said those questions were particularly 'easier'...
We do all get the same questions now, don't we ???
-
I guess today wasn't my best.
Oh did we not get ten Colin.
Who should study more.
I only got a poor eight.
But i do not want to brag.
-
When you do the quiz and click on submit, your answers come up.
How many of you go....ahhhhh, or other stupid noises as soon as you see the big red X?
-
My noises usually begin with a "fff" or a "shhh". :-[
-

As most of the questions seem to be about the USA, I'm usually surprised when I see a tick!

I feel compelled to point out that having psyched myself up for today's quiz as per normal, around 7 seconds in I was subjected to deliberate and relentless distraction tactics, resulting in me losing an incalculable amount of valuable seconds. I shall leave it at that, save to add that A (certain) Woman was left with mixed feelings of triumph coupled with disappointment that I still managed to get 9 right.
I'd demand a steward's enquiry, but there's no way he's going to get to see what I was subjected to.

Ooh! She didn't like that, and stormed off out.
So, no distractions today. ;D
-
Hmph!!! I think the categories themselves are misleading. Anything labelled "easier" really means "pot luck" or "you'll never get all of these" or "don't expect a ten" or "come back tomorrow when the category is easier still" or "do some homework first" or "don't worry it's only a quiz"
I'm proud of my five! So there!!!
>:( ::) ;D
-
Likewise, Tom! Didn't half put an end to my good spell. Looks like Peter's got it in the bag today. Good show, old chap!...Although Colin and Fydo may yet have other ideas.........
-
I think 'easy' means that the question compiler knew the answers. :-)
I still think the hats and ribbons was wrong yesterday - the way they fixed it made is sound like the women had more than one ribbon on their hat. ???
Maybe Vulture can put me right on that one as she got 10 right.

I don't remember a hat question in yesterday's quiz. I usually do mine first thing in the morning when I'm not properly awake. Most of my answers are pure guesswork - especially the ones that ask about American things - like 'what's a dime'? Over here, it's a bar of chocolate. And 'who was the lightest president of the USA' - I mean ... who gives a ?

I got five as well Tom but I took longer so i must have beaten your lowest score
-
It's not the score I'm moaning, grumbling, muttering, cursing, mumbling and griping about... it's the easier category.
I should really know better.
-
I got six - so I'm obviously a much better guesser than you two! :P Hate to think what the 'harder' questions are like - probably all asked in Swahili.
-
The problem is the American questions how are we to know the answers to tv adverts or old presidents
-
... and baseball games and where obscure actors were born AND TV game shows..
But I do think we manage very well on just guesswork!
-
5 today - and I actually knew three of them. Give me a Conundrum any day!

I should get more points cause with my failing eye sight it takes me longer to read the questions correctly.
-
And I should get more points also as I get all of the easier questions.
-
Yes, what the guys are trying to say, Diane, is congratulations on another splendid victory.
-
Thank you TT111 for the wonderful trophy - I will keep it on my cyber fireplace mantle forever. ;D
-
Yes, sorry Diane. I did mean to say congratulations to you too. :-[

Thank you Tom - I looked in the "Hall of Fame" - did you know that you won the challenge in December?
Belated congratulations to you too.

Thank you Diane... I wasn't aware that I'd won. That's a nice surprise! :)
-
Been downhill since then Tom.
-
:o Oh. My. Goodness. Ten out of ten on an easier category. I'm thrilled to the core! ;D
-
At least 6 out of the 10 questions are American based: how can it be 'world' trivia?

Tarquin, couldn't you sleep, or were you on your way to bed?

Colin, is that thirty-five seconds? Well done!

Congratulations TTIII !
-
Magnificent, Diane! Thank you so much.
I have to confess I owe a lot to my nearest and dearest for this, showing great understanding despite the pitying looks, as I made certain our week's holiday during this month included 15 minutes internet connection each day (at extortionate rates), purely in order that I could get my daily fix of this infernal quiz.
I dedicate this hard-fought victory to A Woman, who must surely now concede that it was all worth it? :-\
Look, the kids were in the pool, and she had her Irish coffee - is it too much to ask.......?
-
i was rubbish today

I see we have a new player. Welcome, sam - do we know you better as someone else?
Tarquin, I'm confused. I can't find a 'sam' anywhere. ???
-
Hi Vulch - Sam played the other day. He or she is listed on the standings page.
I'm not Sam, by the way.
-
I'm not Sam, by the way.
Yes, we know: you're Tom. Or am I missing something?
-
Bad day at the office yesterday, and timed out today - I get the feeling this isn't going to be my month. :D
So, Sam - you were saying....?
-
Like I was saying...
Statistically, a monkey could have done better than I did today, so tomorrow I'm going to only look at the answers and bypass the questions. I can only do better, if only by improving my time.
That's fascinating, Sam - do tell us more...

Thank you TTIII - I had never thought of Canada as a face before.
I don't mind if you change the categories Colin - I don't win very often - the trick is just to remember to play every day.
-
Thanks for changing the quiz categories, Colin. Personally, I don't think we have enough questions on the hermetic-qabalistic Ancient Initiatory Order of the Rosicrucians myself, hence another dismal score today.
And it appears we may have lost Sam and gained Postman Pat. Shame really - I thought Sam would have stood a real good chance this month, and I was enjoying speaking with him/her...
So, Pat - how's it hangin'?.......

Sacre bleu! Mon dieu!
Oh, and well done Diane, by the way!!!

easy today.

easy today.
Yeah-yeah! it helps if you were there. :P
-
my score stands on it's own tarks
-
Sounds painful, but well done, Peter.
-
Anyone want to take on Admin of the quiz?
-
Diane, apologies. I've been a bit under the weather the past few days (and you'd think none of the other quiz regulars could bake a cake). Congrats, yet again!

Is that Mr Bean second from left?
Congratulations Diane! ;D

Thank you TTIII for getting out of your sickbed to whip me up that fab cake. ;D

I wuz robbed!
I took the Trivia Challenge today at about 10 o'clock and got 10/10, but when I tried to submit my answers, I got a message saying that they were performing maintenance from 10 to 10.20 Central Time.
The upshot is that my time taken is shown as 1176 seconds, or 19 minutes 36 seconds! Yes a second exclamation mark! Make that three.
Life and quizzes just ain't fair.

Never mind 'you wuz robbed'!!! I took it at 6.30 this morning and got 10! in 83 seconds, and now it isn't there at all!!

I presume it won't let you take it again, Vult, or you'd be up there at the top with about 16 seconds. I think, since you haven't missed a day this month until this glitch occurred, that perhaps Diane and I (the only other ever-presents this month) should magnanimously consider missing tomorrow's quiz in order to restore the balance. Of course, it all hinges on whether Diane is a ruthless BP Quiz addict or not, determined to triumph at all costs (and if she won't do it, I'm b*ggered if I'm going to). What say you, Diane?
Fydo, you're not the first that's happened to (see earlier postings). I think the trick is to try to avoid taking the quiz until after around 11am-noon, UK time, since they seem to routinely perform maintenance at around 10am for about an hour, and if you start just as they are shutting up shop, your seconds will 'carry over'.
This is a serious business, Mince, and I remain to be convinced that you are not indeed postmanpat, aka sam. We're watching you! ..0

Okay - I will not take the test on the 12th. I have just written "Do not do Beau test" in my book.

Diane, I think it's very kind of you and TTIII, but it's not necessary; it's only a game. I expect you both to do you best, as usual, as early as you can tomorrow! :)
-
I think that it will be me who wins tomorrow with or without the two.

But the fourteen pages in this topic suggests that it's more than a game.
And people take things too seriously. It's like those idiots who run around kicking a ball as though it means something. They are totally insane.

We might have known that Mince would bring his hatred of football into this!
-
Can any one help me.
I want to know why people wear camouflage trousers.
If they want to hide you would think that they would wear a top as well but no just the trousers.
Therefore you can still see the top half if the camouflage works if not why wear them?
-
Wild stab, Peter - they look good?
I used to have a pair, but I can't find them anywhere.

Whereas a passion for Dr Who, spaghetti westerns and fulminating with rabid intensity against the TV Licence Fee, are all deeply rational and worthwhile. ..0

Exactly. And who says you learn nothing on this board.

It is a bit disconcerting when all you see is the top half of a body moving around.
Tark's they look good? You sure have a weird sense of humour.

No, Peter - just lots of kids. It's entirely hearsay.

just done today's quiz and got three. they were a lucky guess.

Thank you. Thank you. I owe it all to guesswork and a sad life!

yes I think vultures victory is well deserved.
my abysmal attempts leave me with egg on my face

Congratulations from me too, Vulch! ;D
-
Thanks, lads!
-
Postman Pat is doing very well! Winner yesterday, winner for the week and winner for the month!! ;D ;D
-
got a phone call in the middle of quiz.
dropped me down to second because of time
-
only know one answer but got seven must be my lucky day
-
I played today, for the first time.
I was able to work out the translations, and I knew one other answer. The rest I just guessed. I also got 7. I wasn't very quick about it though, I didn't realise there was a timer. Oh well, I'll do better next time.
-
Thanks, Jack. You've saved me from being wimp of the week - again!
-
Well, I'm glad to be of some use.
How often is the quiz updated? Daily? Weekly?
Can we have questions that aren't about American politicians from before I was born?

There's a new quiz each morning between 6 - 8. There's a list of what each day's quiz is just before the 'play today's game' thingie.
There are an inordinate amount of American based questions - they're the ones I get wrong.
-
Glad to see you back Jack. ;D
-
Funnily enough, I'm always popular when I turn up to give everybody else someone to thrash in a quiz.

:o All 8's so far today apart from Vulture's 7 (in 88 seconds). Spooky.

Updated the questions today and I have taken out the list of questions that are coming up.

Drat! Would have matched your stunning 5 if I hadn't accidentally scrolled past the Edward VIII one.
-
Thanks, Fyodor. It's usually waylander who keeps me from being the bottom of the heap.

Gloating doesn't become you, Peter. If you look at the results [4 points for me and 5 for you] and the Standings (I must admit, I only found these yesterday...) I'm still about 6 points ahead of you!

"Literature: Easier"?
More like "Literature: Easy for fans of Stephen King and those Dark Tower books, which are the subjects of 40% of the questions"
Come on, the name of some random bear in a niche series of books... it's hardly a well known pop culture reference.
-
I read Stephen King's stuff but I've never read any of the Dark Tower books.
I wouldn't put Stephen King in the 'literature' class - just a 'read this if you want the pants scared off you' class. I would take 'literature' as books that have stood the test of time - Noddy, Jane Eyre, Pride and Pred - I don't think 'It' is mature enough.
-
I don't like creepy stuff. However I will buy it if my kids want to read it - I bought my eldest (16) a whole cardboard box of just King books - about half are hardcover - some were ex-library but some were donated for the library sale. He got a huge box full for $20.
At sixteen I am glad he is creeping girls out instead of dating them. ;D
-
You obviously know enough about Stephen King's books to get ALL the answers right!

Who is that directed at? I don't think anybody got all the answers right.
1. terrywogan... 8
2. fyodor.......... 8
3. Jack............. 7
4. waylander..... 8
5. MincyPoo...... 7
6. Tom............. 6
I also don't know who Waylander is on here... You're terrywogan, right Vulture?
(Believe it or not, that's the first time in my life I've ever had opportunity to ask that question)
-
Waylander's Peter Jack

Sorry Jack and Diane. The post about knowing all the Stephen King books was addressed to Mincypoo - who I thought was Diane. I must have mis-read the results - I thought she got 10!
Who's 'Peter Jack', Tom? :D

??? Sam ??? ;)

Okay, I did make that up.

Monthly use of full stops used.

I like them soft, so I can dip my soldiers in - Tom is STILL ahead of you in the month's stakes (AND so am I - so there!) :P

Thanks, Tarquin. You saved me from the ultimate indignity.
-
Thanks, Tarquin. You saved me from the ultimate indignity.
Don't thank me, thank my router. >:(
-
I wonder if the four of us got the same two answers wrong? (Thanks again, Peter!)
-
I don't even remember which two I got wrong now. I guessed at so many of them, it's ridiculous that I managed to get 8/10. I only knew 4 or 5 for definite.
Actually, I don't remember most of the questions now either. Although I do recall being furious upon reading the question about American Monopoly. Though I may have guessed that correctly, come to think of it.

SNARL! I'm going to be several zillion seconds again....just answered them, and it's still trying to load as I type. Bring back Double Your Money! >:(
-
Oh, fantastic - I had to do the questions again. I changed a couple of my answers, one by mistake, only to find that the answers I'd guessed the first time were right.
Come back, postmanpat - give me a reason to stop playing again.
-
I could have been a contender... ;D
And TTIII, cut the Postman Pat excuse out - you wouldn`t have quit if he had been an anonymous crappy player - it only ticks you off `cause he wins! ;)

I'll happily admit that, Diane, as I did earlier. Are you now going to finally come out of that closet yourself, hmmm? :P
-
I'll have you know that I have to come out of the closet to reach the keyboard - so it couldn't be me smartypants. :-*
-
Today I got the exact same score as vulture in the exact same time, but it ranked me lower.
This is so disgraceful, I've a good mind to whinge about it in a post.
Job done.

We were on the same points! Jack was being a baby and crying because his name didn't come first (being a man and all) but I got my points at 8 o'clock this morning, so of course my name comes first!!!!!!!
-
Actually, Vult, before I played, you were on 5 points, and Jack was on 4 because of the way the scoring changes depending on how many play. By storming into the lead like I did :P , I evened you both up to five points. It's okay - no need to thank me.

ACTUALLY, Tarq, when I looked, we were exactly the same. :P
-
And now somebody else has played, so:
3. terrywogan.. 10/10, Time: 70 seconds, Score: 930, Award: +6pts
4. Jack........... 10/10, Time: 70 seconds, Score: 930, Award: +5pts
I can't believe I'm being penalised because I was busy in the morning. I'm going to write an angry letter to my MP.
-
I am on dial-up - it can take me anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds for the page to load. Can you write to your MP about that too?
That is why I never comment on these U Tube clips you all post as it would take me about 15 -to 20 minutes to download one. Just in case anyone was noticing an absense of my commentary.
-
I'm on dial-up too Diane... I have the same relaxing opportunities!
-
It just goes to show that when we all guess we all get the same score.
-
Good grief!
-
Ha! You losers! I guessed more wrong than anyone else. :\
-
Eat my dust.
-
I'm rubbish at geography, but my "If in doubt, guess Hawaii" approach worked pretty well today. I didn't know the philippines question, so that was a lucky guess. The rest were pretty easy though, I thought.
-
Have we another Postman Pat?
-
That's rather unfair, considering that I actually post on the boards.
Besides which, wasn't the theory that Postman Pat was just another player taking the quiz under a different name, thus knowing all the answers? I believe all the current players are accounted for on this forum, with no Unknown Mystery People?
-

It was NOT a criticism, it was the speed, Jack, speed. I worked out that I waste a lot of time moving the cursor from the question to the side bar, dragging it down then back to the question, read the question, make my choice, back to the sidebar.......
Postman Pat disappeared before I could ask him/her, now you've stayed - tell me how you do it in 41 seconds!!!! What am I doing wrong - the fastest I've managed it was 70 :'(
-
Has your mouse not got a scroll wheel, Vult?
-
Has your mouse not got a scroll wheel, Vult?
I have a marble mouse - I just move the ball with middle and/or index finger, use my thumb and little finger for the 'clicking' thingy. It takes a lot less time than actually moving the whole mouse.
-
Well, I'm using a laptop, I suppose I only have to move my finger rather than moving a mouse any distance. Also it's pretty quick to move to the keyboard and back. But mostly it's just trying to be quick but also making sure you've read the question properly.
Didn't do very well today. At least, not compared to everyone else. Turns out I'm not very good at Canadian towns I've never heard of, or the World Cup 6 years before I was born.

I only knew the Canadian town because I have a daughter out there.
Thanks for stopping me from being at the bottom - that's usually waylander's job but I don't suppose he minds.

I use a laptop but I'm still quicker using my marble mouse than that thingy bit in the middle. I don't have to move the mouse because it's just a ball that you twiddle around.
-
Today I missed two questions and still got six.I also only knew two answers and one of them was one of the two i missed.
-
Almost perfect grammar and spelling, Peter, and I still had to read it three times to make sense of it. How do you do that?
Anyway, congratulations on beating me by 8 seconds. >:(

Nope - no idea what that means.

I know,Tarks---he was SO close!
-
Apparently I took 219 seconds to do the quiz today.
Oh no, I didn't!
I timed myself roughly (ohyah!) with the stopwatch on my watch and I took a maximum of 74 seconds. All the rest of the time was spent waiting for the wee green bits at the bottom to move their backsides.
Not that it's bothering me, of course.
Are your bits green?

There's the answer to your problem; concentrate on the screen and NOT your bottom!

Ta.

who the hell is zestywhite
-
Long-time member here, Peter. I take it he's thrashing you all at the quiz.
-
Not the reason for my frustration, Roger. I had one of those costly time interruptions on my Interweb flux capacitor valve (you know), and instead of a sprint start to this month's quiz, someone nicked me trainers. Grrr!
-
Haha. I managed to rush through today's in 54 seconds, which I thought was quite good. For Zesty to do it in 37 seconds is just so outrageous, you can't help but laugh...
-
Well done Jack for your huge point difference September win!
I plan to make a mighty comback in October so watch out!
-

So, where has Vulture flown? Come back, terrywogan - I miss your early morning 'target to beat'.

Now you're just bragging! :\
-
I realised I was in the Hall of Fame twice

Yup! And both times I think I only won 4 games! :P
-
Ha ha! Beat Tarquin by ONE second! It's just too, too thwilling! :D
Yes, I know today's game's not over. But it is for Tarks!
-
You didn't beat me by one second, McGookin - I lost to you by one second, by virtue of playing after you.
It's an important distinction......I did it - not you!
At the time you clocked up your score, you were just playing with yourself....so to speak.
And anyway, I stopped for a drink mid way through. :\
-
Mince, you bloody cheat!!! There's no WAY anyone could have got 10 out of 10 in the time you did today. You're asking us to believe you've gone from being a total thickie to a guy who knows what university some obscure American basketball player went to as well as knowing the inside leg measurement of Susan Sarandon's hairdresser? >:(
-
Mincypoo is me.
-
There's a beamer, all the way from Australia! ;D
Diane, that was a mightily impressive score today...and beyond reproach, as always.
-
I can't believe Diane wanted to emulate Mince, not that it's illegal. Well done.
-
Ah, well...if it's you and you're living in North America, I could see how you might get those answers, so er... well....er.... ..0
Only kidding. CHEAT!!!
-
I thought we would only be playing this game for a few weeks and I would stink at it when I called myself Mincypoo.
As for today's 10 - I made an educated guess on four of the questions - for example the hair colour one - most people's hair is brown so I picked that colour. Not that I'm not brilliant too of course. ;D
-
Mince, you bloody cheat!!!
Notice how easily you considered me a cheat, even when I was totally innocent. I think a retraction is in order. ?100 would do just as good.
-
And he'd like that in 12 ten pound notes.
-
Zestywhite - 10/10 in 32 seconds. Go get him, Malky!
-
OK, where is he?
It is a he, isn't it?
-
I noticed that Mincypoo deliberately got one question wrong to deflect suspicion in this last game.
Yes, nice try, 'poo but you're not fooling anybody.
-
I deliberately got one wrong in todays quiz ..0 - don't know how I got the other nine right though ???
I'm experiencing pop-ups... is anyone else?

Well done, Jack!

Ithankyouverymuch.

Lots of pop-ups today, and slowness submitting/accepting the answers too. Back on the laptop with its pop-up blocker tomorrow, methinks.
-
Who's "zestywhite"?
Bloody cheat. >:(
Lowest on the cumulative scores for the month, yet today they blitzed the (quite difficult) quiz in a mere 40 or so seconds. It raises suspicions at a Chinese Gold medal swimmer level.
-
Zesty is a brilliant young medical doctor - who obviously grew up with computer games.
-
So says Ms Six-Wins-Pips-You-At-The-Post-Every-Day-Take-That-Suckers Minceypoo. :P
Right - I'm off to do today's quiz. And from now on, it's no more Mr Nice Guy... I'm playing right-handed! >:(

The questions sure seem harder this month...

Alas, I'm not a medical doctor (nor brilliant - and young, well hey, that's all relative isnt it? :)). I a mere research scientist. I have none of the respect/cash/job security associated with medicine :(
However, I do like quizzes. If I could only remember to do this thing every day, I might not end up down at the bottom of the league.
I still doubt I'd chase down mineypoo right enough...
-
Sorry about that Zesty. You do wear a smart white lab coat though don't you?
-
And you do have the ability to freeze time, don't you?
-
I agree you just cant read them that fast.
-
Bloody cheat. >:(
-
I do wear a snazzy white labcoat, but the hospital laundry isnt what it once was. I had one returned to me only last week that was 2 sizes too big.
As for slowing time, I couldnt possibly comment :)
-
Ah, Mincy and Zesty, I see you deliberately let me win today.
Well don't get complacent, I'm on to your little game. 8)
-
Thank the Lord for two good guesses today, that's all I can say. :-\
-
today I knew only 1 question the rest were guesses.
-
Good going on the guesses though, Peter!
Even ol' Zesty got a crap score, but he was quicker at being crappy than me - not sure what that says.
Diane, I don't know what kind of oily fish you've been scoffing this month, but I'm sorely in need of some, and I detest fish. Your performances this month have been even more awesome than ever.
Malc, you're a bloody cheat if you overtake me now.
-
Jack, on the other hand, appears to be getting his dog to play for him this month..... :-\
-
I've been very tired.
Yes, tired is in this case a euphemism for "stupid".
-
I got a score of two once. It was an experiment to see how quickly I could do the quiz. I didn't read any of the questions, and hit the answer (a) for every one. I think it took about 10-15 seconds all told
And I still got two right.
There now, Jack - does that make you feel better?
-
Yes. Yes it does.
Oh, hang on, sorry. I misread "better" as "bitter".
-

Bloody cheat, McGookin!
Diane, a Lazarus-style recovery this month after the hi-Jack of your rightful status in recent times. Congratulations on yet another notch on your metaphorical quiz bedpost.
Don't look back though - I've got a feeling this will be a tough month ahead, with Christmas spirit a little thin on the ground. I can sense the sweat spilling to the floor of the brain gym, as a handful of wannabe's pump their smartar*e muscle in earnest.
Me? Cup of tea and a chocolate Hobnob, as always. ;)

Saturday was the harshest quiz I've faced on this thing. I thought I'd guessed well at first, because I had 2 out of the first 3 correct. Alas, it didnt get any better. Ah well, them's the breaks...
-
I've figured how to play this quiz. The trick is not to be first. That way you can wait until the other
suckers contestants have a go, and see if any of the leaders post an 8. If so, when you take your turn you can relax, cogitate, change your mind, etc. It might take 140 seconds for you to to get a 9, but that's still better than an 8 which only took 54 seconds.
I'm anticipating a different atmosphere this month, as contestants all wait until the last minute before taking part. It'll be like bloody eBay.
-
Malc, I was aware that I was having an advantage by playing later than everyone else (not my fault the time difference) I do make a special effort to be the first to play if ever I am up very late (i.e. after 1:00 AM) to try and be fair and make up for this.
Thank you TTIII - always gracious as ever.
-
Diane, there's no "advantage" to be had due to your geographical location, for instance I can either be first or last, it depends on when I decide to play. I just figured out all too late that sometimes it doesn't help to be first cab off the rank.
Now that I know you lot are all pretty cluey, I can look at the scores and judge how hard the quiz is likely to be that day. That also gives me a clue as to whether I should whizz through it (I might have to get a 10, and have to do it quickly) or whether I can coast a little because no-one got above an 8.
Mind you, I don't ever want to get too competitive, so I'll regularly take my turn as the pigeon. ;D
-
Zesty, you are postmanpat and I claim my five pounds.
10 correct in 32 seconds? It took me that long to read the first two questions.
-
Who the heck is postmanpat?
I just got lucky with those questions and I can read quite fast, although that does trip me up sometimes.
Dont worry, it'll come round to literature questions again and I'll be stumped.

Ha - all you have to do is score ten or more in less than 42 seconds today, Malc - your theory sucks!

Who the heck is postmanpat?
;D
-
Ya bunch of show-offs!
-
Honest I did try to better your score Tarks.

Not Literature again!!!!! :(

You should read Harry Turtledove books that will help.
He does books that says what if the south won the civil war.
-
Just an observation... :-\
You're 6 points clear of the pack after only 14 days, with 5 wins under your belt, and the top daily average of 5.9, and you routinely get the top score in less than half the time anyone else does.
Just an observation... :-\
-
Yeah, you cheat >:(
-
Anyone who wasn't a cheat, and who wanted to avoid further accusation, would lose a couple of rounds. ..0
-
To be clear, I do not associate myself with Malc's compulsive "Cheat!" disorder, Zesty - it's just that your observation ranks alongside the stranger who once complained to me at a soiree that he wasn't getting very good miles-per-gallon in his Ferrari.
-
:) It's all a bit random because I fluked an 8 in that round not knowing about 6 of the answers and then yesterday the only 2 I had to guess at, I got them wrong.
I get reasonable mpg in my Corsa, but there's a funny noise coming from it when I steer at low speeds. Does that make you feel any better? :)
-
How come I scored way higher than Zesty on today's trivia, but he got equal points? I realise that he took less time, but he SCORED LESS and I'm sure that's an important factor.
-
Player Award Correct Seconds Score
1. Malky + 2 pts 9 88 812
2. zestywhite + 2 pts 6 65 535

I think the final points aren't allocated until they know exactly how many people took part. The adjustment doesn't take place until the days' competition is closed.
-
I see that, looking at the scores as they stand presently, but it's the principle! I mean, it's dog eat dog out there in this mean world and you can't go giving free points to your competitors.

Congratulations Jack - January 2009 Beau Peep Trivia Challenge Winner!
Sorry this is late - it was a fine month with so many so close to winning - and with the top player changing so many times - most exiting month ever. Well done Jack
-
Thankyou Diane.
A note about today's quiz...
those questions with "all of these" as the answer are annoying enough already, but when the question is "Which one of these...?" then it's even more stupid.
-
D'oh! Started today's quiz just too close to the scheduled maintenance shut down. Ho hum!
-
Categories have been changed today.
The questions are a lot more harder now. ;D
-
Once again, the leader scored TWO POINTS higher than the second placed player yet both received the same score.
-
Same rules for all, Malc - we all have suffered, but they are consistent. You have to look at it like the equivalent of bad refereeing decisions evening themselves out over a season (yeah, I know that's b*ll*x too).
I had seven lucky guesses today. :D
-
That's what I mean, I never get those refereeing decisions. Not that I care.
:'(

a) A quiz
b) A lemon
c) Quantum physics
d) All of these
Does d) include intself?
What's "intself"?
-
"intself" is a fusion of the words "integer" (whole number) and "itself". Since the choices are alphanumeric, the idea that D) can refer to itself, absurd in itself given the inevitable self-referrential recursion that would occur, is given extra impossible absurdity in the idea that only numerical reference is allowed with alphanumeric sequential itemisation.
I hope that explains things.
-
Well done Diane - winning the February competition like that! - you must be proud.
-
Bravo! I've never looked at this quiz but Bravo!
-
Yeah, congratulations on another month of ruthless, naked ambition, Diane - I see you've now added shameless egotism and self-publicity to that, and are already carving up all in your path for this month, even after only four days.
I'd have posted my congratulatory bit of nonsense, as I have done in the past, but quite frankly I'm bored with having to come up with a new twist every time you win, so I've decided it's no more, Mr Nice Guy, and I'm going to stop playing the quiz left-handed and blindfolded. I obviously can't rely on any of these other wasters to do the job for me.
We've already witnessed the extraordinary lengths some people will go to in order to not admit defeat, with Mince's last posting above. But he ain't got nuthin' on you, Lady!
Let battle recommence...

-
Spoken Written like a true gent!
If that's true, more warnings are needed.
-
I figured you must have been playing left-handed or blindfolded TTIII what because of your scores being so low and all.
I am not going to play before my morning coffee kicks in from now on AND am going to study up on European soccer leagues and pop music...
I'm not going down without a fight.
-
Don't worry, Diane - those North American questions will always be in plentiful supply.
Oooh, this could get nasty!
-
You really had to think about that last question today, huh, Malky?
5 hours, 13 minutes and 12 seconds must be a record time-out so far - my condolences!
-
You took 18792 seconds to complete this quiz.
Tonight, just as I was about to start the quiz, someone phoned me, I hung up half an hour later, went to football training, had a chat and a beer afterwards, came home, discussed with my wife the future of our fifteen year-old son and whether his interest in girls is outweighing his interest in football, sat down at the computer, absolutely whizzed through the quiz in a mere few seconds, thought smugly to myself "that'll show Zesty Zmartarse" only to find I had actually started it 5.22 hours ago.
Still, it's about the taking part, eh?
-
I've seldom heard anything so preposterous - tell him to stick to football.
-
As for the rest of that fantasy, I put it to you that the truth is that you've Googling the answers for over five hours...and STILL got two wrong. :\
-
You got me.
Unfortunately, due to a power outage I was using my nearest neighbour's computer in Woohoolamoolagoolaboola, a cattle station an hour's drive from here.
-
McGookin pulled a wire out of my modem today. >:(
-
Heh heh. Not personally, of course, but I have friends everywhere.
-
He He - I'm glad I watched the DIe Hard movies now!
-
Your friends got me again today, McGookin - twice in one week is not funny! >:(
Was there a Die Hard question today? Not in my collection there wasn't. Are we back to having different questions again, Colin?
-
I'm sure question 8 said see a vegetarian.
-

No.
I've not touched it for a couple of weeks.

The first world cup was held in italy and was won by a team of miners from Britain.
Organised by Sir Thomas Lipton and was played in Turin.
Was won by a team from West Auckland County Durham was defended by them and they kept the cup.
-
Manchester United richer than Manchester City?! Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be wounded at the very notion..... :)
-
What's that got to do with the price of fish? If that comment relates to a question in today's quiz, then we are definitely not all getting the same questions again. I had no such question.
-
I agree there was no question about football or money
-
There was no question about the price of cod either. ???
-
I've just updated it.
You should all now get the same questions. ..0
-
no wonder I never won i got all the hard ones
-
Heh heh heh. ;D
That's my evil laugh, that is.
-
Hmph! I think we know who got all the easy ones now, don't we? :\
-
There you go 10 out of 10
-
I'm impressed, peter - how on Earth did you get the one about the Rhode Island Red traversing the M6 right?
I see we have a new shark in the waters today - anyone care to own up to the 'desperate2' moniker?
-
it was what do you call a wandering SCOTSMAN THAT I STOOK A PIN IN .
-
it was what do you call a wandering SCOTSMAN THAT I STOOK A PIN IN .
Nope - sorry, peter. Hopelessly lost on that one. :-\
-
Desperate is me.
I love to experiment and I noticed that even though I had scored more points than Zesty, he was on the same score for the day.
I therefore created a new contestant for the day, deliberately came last and the addition of that contestant gave me the point above Zesty. Weird, eh?
In the interests of fair play I then took part in the next day's quiz as "desperate" and won, therefore giving myself no points as "Malky" which I think evens things up.
I'm now back to being Malky again.
Just thought I'd let you know
-
Yeah the points thing is weird. Because we have so few players, there can be a huge difference in the scores for 1st and 2nd and the same points are awarded. I assume the fact it says top 50 scores of the day, they're expecting less of a score gap between the top two, but I agree that the winner should always score more than everybody else.
Malc, I'm tempted to call you a big fat cheat, but by doing your Desperate2 thing on day one, you only gained a single point of an advantage. By not playing as Malky, on day 2, you cost yourself 4-6 points. So rather than condemn you for cheating, I applaud your curiosity and your scientific approach to you experiment :)
-
Big, fat cheat!
-
I am, like, so noble.
-
Just on your knees is it?
-
These days, yes, but it used to to reach my shin.

A time-out on Day 2 already - it's not looking good for this month. Call off the spooks, McGookin!

Time-out 2 out of 4 - I give up! <-

"Spook" was my nickname at school. My old school chums (including the former military commander of the Falkland Islands) still send me emails addressed to "Spook".

It helps if Zesty plays every day so we can legitimately say we kicked his arse.
-
What a silly quetion about the queen she has cellibrated fifty years as a monarch.
so i discounted her
-
That apart, the real concern is how Zesty can answer ten questions in 28 seconds. For the non-mathematicians, in a ten question quiz that's a question every 2.8 seconds.
Just say the sentence "bloody cheating bastard" with deliberate venom and you get an idea how little time that actually is. I'm pushing for a stewards enquiry.
-
Do you want everyone to have different questions now ..0
After all, having the same questions, you know whats coming up next. 8)

Did anyone catch who won the Trivia last month? I was too busy to notice.
-
I usually get an email notifying me about the results at the start of each month, but so far, zilch. Can't help, Malc - sorry.

Only kidding. It was me, Tarks.

I changed some of the topics today.
-
knowing only two of the question today I think i did good
-
Yeah, yeah - two in a row....
-
Oh I wouldn't know, who's counting?
Three in a row, I think.
-
Wasn't counting the 'cheating b@st@rd' month.
-
Today I only knew one answer; had two good guesses and FOUR lucky guesses!
-
Oh, well done, Diane! ..0 :P
I, on the other hand, was certain about nine of them, but was wrong about that six times, with one lucky guess. :'(
-
I'm saying nothing.
-
Erm...didn't Zesty get married yesterday? Certainly doesn't seem to have affected his performance in the quiz today... :-\
-
Well done TTIII - on winning the September challenge. It is more fun now that we are not getting wiped out by Zesty and his 10 rights in under 30s eh? ;D
-
Thanks, Diane! Couldn't agree more, especially when I manage to beat you into the bargain. Hopefully you'll manage to compete every day this month - the victory is slightly hollower when it's gained with more days played than anyone else. I toyed briefly with the notion of not playing the last three days to let you catch up, but since I'd built up an unassailable lead by then, I thought it might appear patronisng, rather than sporting, to do so.
Truth - do you punch the air, and hiss the word 'YESSSSS!" when you see those ten green ticks, and the best time so far....or is it just me?

;D ;D ;D Yes, that one is as good as a set of blocks on the starting line for a sprint finish (although the other day I did, in my haste, give its answer to the other common question about Jesus telling the disciples who to pray to, and ended up with egg all over my mush).
Hopefully we'll have a little more company this month... if they're not too scared........ ;)

Natural order has been restored. Congratulations, Diane - magnificent effort.
(Can we have the dead easy questions back, Colin?)
Some people are never happy.
-
The questions are now all on fun trivia, except today's.
Until someone complains
;D
-
Aw, I was joking, Colin!
But don't go rushing back to change them again. Wouldn't want to put you out.
-
Does anyone want to take over Admin duties on the trivia challenge?
-
What do you have to do, Colin, and how much control would you have?
Would you, for example...I dunno, purely hypothetically, be able to subtract Dia... someone's points for instance, if you feel they've stepped out of line in any way, for example and stuff?
-
You do have the ability to delete Dia....someone's account if you so wish.
You want the job?
Makes sense to have an Admin who actually plays every day.
-
Okay, if Dia... no-one has any objection, I'd be prepared to step up to the plate and relieve you of this onerous task, Colin. Do they have a works Christmas party?
-
No Colin! Don't throw me under the bus!
-
Okay, if Dia... no-one has any objection, I'd be prepared to step up to the plate and relieve you of this onerous task, Colin. Do they have a works Christmas party?
You now have control.
Under where it says "Play Today's Game" you will see the Admin function.
Fill yer boots ;D
And no, there's no party.
-
Thanks, Colin. And thanks for doing the business this far - much appreciated!
I promise I shall treat this task with all the gravitas it demands.
:)

Ten out of ten and the daft phone rang in the middle! :'(

8. zestywhite (6 points, 1 wins)
Well done Jack!
-
Indeedy doody - congrats, Jack. As the new Quiz Czar, I've taken the liberty of changing the categories for the new year. I had a good look through all the questions to make sure they were of a decent standard, and to double check the answers are correct, so that there will be no dispute when the winner is crowned each month. Looking good!
Okay, I'm kidding. You can't actually do that.
Not that I even tried, of course...
-
You'll have to watch it now Lucy's entered the fray!
-
MMCF?
-
Something like that. I thought it would be LMcF (as her surname's McFadden - not very Filipino, I know).
-
Grrrr, I clicked to start the quiz today and the bloody page with the questions on took three minutes to load up!
Grrr.
-
CHAA-AAA-AAAAA-AAARGE!!!!! >:(
-
Indeed! :\ ;D
-
Congratulations to Calvin for a masterful win in the first quiz month of the year.
Thought I'd step it up a notch starting tomorrow if that's okay with everyone? Good - that's settled then.
-
I hate to sound like a poor sport, but I'm sick of losing - especially to that young upstart Calvin.
Well done Calvin my arse.
-
;D
-
:o ;D
I keep trying to rejoin the quiz but keep getting distrac
-
Oooh, nasty! I once had a bad bout of distrac myself, Tom. Lots of salt water and plenty of bed rest. Try sucking a Fisherman's Friend.
-
I know it's painful
-
I don't know any fishermen.
-
Especially?
Cool...playing the trivia game is way more fun with sore losers ;)
Which name do you use? I haven't seen Diane up there.
Malc is tough, he might have my number this month.
-
Well I felt sorry for Tarks, being at the bottom there, so I deliberately got the lowest score. Actually, I was put off by a pop up for a credit score. Outrageous or what?
-
Especially?

Be thankful Zesty isn't playing.
-
Played that trivia today, press submit answer and it took forever to load! 506 seconds??? it didn't take me that long to answer the questions!! >:(
BTW Tark's give my best to Sam and kids. Are you guys going to that Gala Dinner thing in Butlin's? :)
-
Lucy, we've all been there. I think the record is something along the lines of 27,000 seconds. Commiserations!
Will pass on your best to Sam and the kids, and I'm sure they'll want to return the same. Sadly, we won't be going to the Butlins do, no. Hopefully, we might arrange another 'jam' before then though - Peepsie must be missing my harmonies by now. A reunion of The Blouse Brothers is long overdue...
-
I think the questions are a lot harder from when I participated in the quiz last time. I'll never win at this rate...
-
Grr... you forget ONE lousy day, and suddenly you're waaay behind on points.
-
I've forgot more than one... and was way behind to start off with!
-
Grr... you forget ONE lousy day, and suddenly you're waaay behind on points.
As Diane once put it, Jack, remembering to play is part of the game. And I've played every day this month, and you're still waaaay ahaead of me. You want sympathy? Go fish... :P
-
No, not looking for sympathy... it's just that grumbling in this topic makes me feel marginally less stupid than grumbling aloud to myself. :)
-
I keep forgetting to play, but I console myself that if I multiply my points average by the days not played I would be....er... third.
-
You need to remember Malc. You're our last best hope of someone beating Calvin next month. :)
-
I think I've completely given up.
-
I'm not happy - it sucks not winning.
-
What sucks is the scoring system. As it stands right this minute, I have 10 questions right, Calvin has 9, yet we both have the same points!
As more contestants take part, the points system changes, but it's still annoying

Don't worry Malc; Now I've played, you have 10 questions right, Calvin has 9, and you deservedly have one more point than he does.
Of course, I also got 10 and am on the same points as he is, one less than you.
Grr.
-
There you go, Malky - out there on your own, you whinging Pom! ..0
-
Of course, I also got 10 and am on the same points as he is, one less than you.
Grr.
Heh heh heh...
-
How can you get 10/10 in 48 seconds. I can just about read it in that time!!!
-
PostmanPat would have done it in 24 seconds.
If you try very hard to be quick, and don't need to stop to think about any of the answers, ~40-50 seconds is doable. Sadly, not knowing the answer immediately causes your brain to automatically re-read the options and have a quick think about it, which adds a surprisingly large number of seconds to your time. I only paused to think about a couple, and my time ended up nearly double Malc's time.
-
Well done Calvin.
-
Ha! Beat you all for time today!
(Wot Diane said).
-
I'm going to try a new method whereby I just speed by, not even looking at the question, but just picking out whatever word seems most prominent, then hit the answer button most closely associated with that word without any consideration for accuracy.
Why don't you all try that too?
-
Don't listen to him. It's a ploy. He'll get you all to do it and then do it normally himself.
-
Don't listen to him. It's a ploy. He'll get you all to do it and then do it normally himself.
I didn't think Malc did 'normally'! :P
-
What? The evil b@stard! Thanks, Mincey - I'd have never seen through his despicable plot all by myself.
-
WOW! 35 seconds. Pity there were only 2 right answers. Back to the drawing board - hang on, I'm not a cartoonist ... Back to the User Access Device (MOD-speak for a PC).
-
Something must be wrong with the quiz. I got them all right and was the fastest (well at least up to now). Hopefully it will be back to normal tomorrow.
-
Yep, back to normal again.
-
Yep, back to normal again.
You got 1/10 then?!

Correction ... in these days of Political Correctness, we are all created equal and therefore the niceties I am accustomed to (such as opening doors, or keeping them open for other people, giving up a seat to someone who might benefit from it more) seem to no longer apply to the world. I shall continue to observe them, whatever the sex, etc.
p.s. Got 10/10 today, but took twice the time to read the questions.

Do you know, in some places, the exact opposite is now the norm. Several years ago, I went to another town (I'll not mention it, in case some guests are from that town ... etc) and visited Woolworth's, when it was there. A woman got herself trapped in the door rushing through it so she didn't have to hold it open for me. I gave her a half smile and went through a different door.
I always try to see the best in people, but sometimes I have to laugh at them.
-
Quite right, Tom. Some years ago, I got tired of holding doors open for women and getting diddly squat thanks for it. These days, not only do I refuse to open doors for them, I hold them shut so they can't get out. Harsh but fair.
-
I hope people accept that I am a very fair minded and non sexist type, but one of the bugbears of being associated with womens football is the in-your-face attitude of young lesbians.
Kissing and canoodling in public, especially the mouth to mouth combat sort, isn't acceptable to me. I find it irritating, immature and rude, no matter the gender or sexuality of the couple. What I'm finding is that young tubby women with tattoos seem to think that since the advent of sexual liberation (I'm not sure what date that was, I think I was off sick) normal standards of decorum don't apply to them.
Some clubs in the womens league have become hotspots for lesbians because the nature of the sport means that many of the better players are gay. This is natural, and the way of the world (though it does stop a lot of talented straight girls playing football as women) but the unfortunate impression gained by some ignorant observers is that football 'turns' girls gay, and when they see two young women going at it on the sidelines they act with horror, especially if they knew at least one of them when she was 'normal'.
-
Malc, as much as it pains me to say it, I agree with you totally!
-
Just a couple of thoughts here...
Everyone is normal. However, people's perceptions of normal don't always agree.
Public displays of affection. I hate it. Unless I'm showing the affection and then I don't care.
-

It's not the 'normality' that I'm uncomfortable with, it's the 'get a room' displays (either gender) that make me cringe!
-
Is this going to be the topic about which we all agree? :-*
-
Tom, that's why I put the word 'normal' in quotes. The fact is everyone IS normal, but it's amazing how many people have a very narrow definition of what 'normal' is.
-
I know, Malc... that's what I said! 8)
-
What the heck?
I just went to answer the questions, got to the end, submitted my answers... and a screen came up saying that "while you were answering, the questions changed". So I went back, and lo, there were 10 different questions to answer.
I answered these new questions, but it seems to have timed from when I started the first lot.
Very bizarre.
So, those of you who played today... did you get the set with the question about who was president in the first world war, or the set with the address of the white house?
-
I don't remember either of those questions today.
-
:P
-
I came second bottom yesterday, but Calvin didn't even show up!
Hahahahahaha!
-
I've figured out where I'm going wrong. I am first to post on the competition, which allows the evil Calvin to wait until he sees my score, then he can assess how to approach his session. i.e. if he sees the highest scorer only has 9 points (or 8), he can relax a little more, knowing he can take a valuable extra couple of seconds to answer tricky questions.
Yes, that's it. Evil Calvin, smoking his long cheroot, in his darkened room, surrounded by TV monitors showing the different chambers in his underground bunker, stroking his fluffy cat, sits waiting....waiting.
So I'm posting last from now on.
-
Good idea, but don't forget the time difference and miss the deadline.
Now me, I just try and remember to play the game, whatever the time of day.
-
Well, I don't really care. I'm just playing against Diane (and losing). :\
-
Well, I don't really care. I'm just playing against Diane (and losing). :\
Yeah for me! ;D
I'm sick of losing too. >:(
-
I got sick of losing when I didn't forget to play. Then I got sick of forgetting.
-
I find that now that I have discounted the efforts of Calvin, Jack and Malc (by holding up a little piece of paper at the top of the winners list to obliterate the names) I am much happier; my self esteem has rebounded and I am sleeping a lot better at night.
-
Diane, I don't know if this will help you to sleep any better, but think of yourself as being a winner anyway, for appearing on the winner's list. Whether in first place, or way down at the bottom... that way it's a lot less pressure. Slightly less competitive, but hey. I'm still a winner from the last time I appeared on the list.
I do remember being number one a while back, but I won't mention that whilst I'm talking about everything being equal.
-
Damn, I missed the bloody deadline!
-
Happy 2,000th post Malc

-
Bloody Calvin.
I clicked on 'Play Today's Game' and a white screen came up which stayed on for ages, but no questions appeared. They turned up about 80 secs later, otherwise I would have beaten everyone, except for the fact I only got nine right.
-
...."The sun was in my eyes"..."My dog ate my homework"..... ;)

I know we've still got a day to play, but congratulations Calvin.
May as well say Congratulations for April too, while I'm here.

Shush... got to do something else now... :-\
-
Don't you just love it when you start the quiz, the credit rating window pops up (wasting precious seconds in closing the same), only to be disturbed by a phone call. Oops, as I am at work and should be preparing my stuff for the trip to sunny Brussels next week, perhaps I should not do the quiz in work time.
Anyway, as my time was shot, and I stand little chance of beating the likes of Calvin, etc, I pressed buttons at random - and got 6 right. My aim must be improving, as the last time I tried that I only got 2 right.
-
Yay, Calvin. Nice one. Unexpected!
-
Well done Calvin for March. But beware. I'm about to begin my campaign for April. Read 'em and weep, buddy.
-
OK, that's stuffed up April. Just you wait until May >:(
-
Ha! Me and Diane storm into an early lead. Happy days are here again... ;D
-
Bu**er!. Start the damn quiz, then room service pops up with my veg pizza. And I got 10/10!! I managed to correctly answer No10, but then 30+ years of marriage have correctly indoctrinated me to say the PC answer and survival instincts to not say what I am thinking.
-
Grumble
-
Amazing. I do the quiz and get a couple wrong - due to my lack of trivia knowledge. Then the very next morning, I continue my latest book ( Dead and Gone, by Charlaine Harris), turn the page, and the answer to one of my wrong questions is right there in print.
-
Malky,
Being an expert in these matters, why do you get one more point than me (at this moment in time) on the quiz, yet we both have 10/10 (yea!) and the same time. Yet Tarks, who is 11 seconds slower, get the same points award as me. For that matter, Calvin has the same time and correct answers as Tarks, yet gets one less point than him.
I'm confused. Please help me Obi-wan Malky.
-
The quiz people just like me and Malky better than you and Calvin, Bill. Deal with it!
-

I think you'll find the quiz people consist of two mothers - Malc's and Tarquin's!

Problem?

Not at all. It's good to know that someone loves you!

-
Wow! Ten correct answers in 34 seconds - looks like we have a new sharp-shooter in our quiz ranks. Way to go, Mikey!
I'm assuming we know you as something else, yes? Or are you in fact the infamous Mick McDuck, who joined us in August 2007 and is yet to post?
-
Tarks... what makes you think it was Mick McDuck?
Ten in thirty-four... 'sgood, that.
-
Mick - Mikey. Just clutching at straws, Tom. Always nice to know who's gubbing us in the quiz.
-
Has this "Mikey" got the same IP address as a certain other contestant by any chance? ..0
-
How is that "trying not to deviate too much from my wording"?
-
Bil, the scoring system is a bit of a mystery, it's designed for a bigger pool of contestants, as the more players, the more sensible the points spread. I think.
My excuse for not finishing the quiz in 20 seconds is that I use a Wacom pen and it's not as fast as a mouse.
As for Mikey, is he Zesty or is Calvin the old Zesty?
If none of these, where Zesty?
-
How is that "trying not to deviate too much from my wording"?
I was trying to be a bit more subtle...
-
26 seconds today...
Not to be a spoilsport, but that's just taking the piss.
-
It's also cheating, Jack. As admin, I have access to the IP addresses of all contestants. I tried to give 'Mikey' the opportunity to explain this voluntarily. Now I'm giving him one more chance to let us in on his little joke, or I'll do it for him.
-
I'm just upset because even if I knew the questions and answers beforehand, I still reckon it'd take me 40 seconds. Maybe 38. 36 tops. <-
If I even knew the technique being used just to click through the answers so quickly, I reckon I'd save a bit of time.
(By the way Tarks, do you only have the recent IP addresses? Or can you delve back into the quiz history to find out about the mysterious Postman Pat? :o)
-

It's Diane isn't it!? I knew it! I never trusted that no-good... oh, wait... you said "him"?
*ahem*
I knew it wasn't Diane. Salt of the earth, that woman. None better, that's what I always said...
-
For the record: I didn't get one wrong today, I just missed the whole question - I may have got it wrong if I had seen it but I didn't, I scrolled by so fast trying to pick up speed and missed it.
-
I do that fairly regularly, scrolling right by a question.
-
I do that fairly regularly, scrolling right by a question.
Define "fairly regularly", seeing as how you always seem to get 10/10 ;)
Or are you saying you accidentally scroll past a question, scroll back to it, then answer it... and after wasting all that time, still manage to beat us all the time. Because that's just rubbing it in...
(not that I'm at all jealous or bitter)
(...git.) :P
-
I'm really glad I've never even looked at this quiz.
-
I'm really glad I've never even looked at this quiz.
So are we. You'd only embarrass us with your constant winning. It's very gracious of you to give the rest of us a chance. I thank you.
-
Um...yes...that's the reason.
-
So are we. You'd only embarrass us with your constant winning.
SPELLING: whining
-
(By the way Tarks, do you only have the recent IP addresses? Or can you delve back into the quiz history to find out about the mysterious Postman Pat? :o)
I can indeed, Jack, but I have to tell you that Postman Pat's IP address does not match any IP address belonging to those currently listed as belonging to Beau Peep board members. It does however match perfectly with the former quiz player known as Sam (presumably Fireman Sam?), who also used to achieve phenomenally fast perfect scores. However, I do not recall Postman Pat and Sam playing the quiz at the same time, so that could just have been a case of having to reregister for some reason. The current Mikey situation is a little different.
Mikey?
-
:-[ I'm beginning to feel it's me. I hope it's not me, as I haven't done the quiz for a while. At least I don't think I have. :-[
-
Relax, Tom - definitely not you. ;D
-
Has no one been hung, drawn and quartered yet?
-
Don't you mean "hanged"? ..0
-
"The distinction between hanged and hung is not an especially useful one (although a few commentators claim otherwise). It is, however, a simple one and easy to remember. Therein lies its popularity. If you make a point of observing the distinction in your writing you will not thereby become a better writer, but you will spare yourself the annoyance of being corrected for having done something that is not wrong."
- Merriam-Webster's Dictionary of English Usage, 1994

Relax, Tom - definitely not you. ;D
Phew.

but you will spare yourself the annoyance of being corrected for having done something that is not wrong."
So it's official? Peepmaster is an annoyance?

Come on, Mincey. You're the first person to pick up on someone's mistake. I know your resort to the "vernacular" argument, but that's a school boy error. ..0

Sorry to be a pain, especially to those who participated in the quiz. I was trying an experiment and it succeeded.
Bye.
Now look what you've done, Tarquin! You've upset him. You're unbelievably unsubtle and heavy-handed sometimes. You just couldn't leave it alone, could you?
:-*
-
Yeah, that's me, Mincey - bang to rights! Oh, well - in for a penny...
Experiment, Bill? What experiment? For those who have no idea what this is all about, what Bill's experiment consisted of was creating a new identity for the daily Beau Peep Quiz, namely 'Mikey', then having done the quiz under his own name, playing again as Mikey, with the slight added advantage of knowing all of the answers, and therefore getting all of the questions correct in superhuman times. If that's a successful experiment, Bill, then so be it - I have a different name for it. It's also something that any one of us could have done, and doesn't exactly require a degree in rocket science to work out how to do it. Yes, it's only a fun quiz, but it's enjoyed by everyone who participates in it, and I suspect there's a very healthy competitive strand that unites all the players - it ceases to be quite so much fun when someone decides to "experiment" on it, and I wonder just how long this experiment would have run had you not been rumbled?
It's disappointing enough that you chose to do this, Bill, but the manner in which you 'explain' it deepens that disappointment considerably. You've had ample opportunity till now to come up with a decent explanation, and perhaps make light of it all, since I posted my initial 'Mikey' comments on this thread, hoping to tempt you to do so. But rather than do that, you brought Mikey into further action on the quiz, and kept shtum. Then, when you couldn't take the 'experiment' any further, you pick up your ball and go (I'm assuming that's what you meant by "Bye." - although we seem to have heard that before), with a couple of very brief lines, which give the appearance of qualifying your apology by justifying your actions as a 'successful experiment'. I'm sorry, Bill, but that's the kind of childish response that I would never have let any of my children get away with. I'd like a bit more than that, if you please.
There you go, Mince - now your last post makes sense.
-
Tarquin, I was just winding you up about finding yourself, in the position of admin, having to deal with this.
I agree with what you say.
I would add that the Beau Peep members are notorious for messing around with things - well, I am, with all the jokes we have played on Roger through the board and with private forums - but I guess in those instances I did have others who were in on (and could informally sanction) the joke.
I too would like a little more from Bill. If it was just him being unthinking and stupid, telling us at least would be good.
-

At least you have access to others away from the general view of the public. Perhaps I could have messaged before I tried it - but below applies
I too would like a little more from Bill. If it was just him being unthinking and stupid, telling us at least would be good.
That's it exactly - I didn't think at the time, although there was no malice or cheating intended (I did not use 'mikey' then my own login for scoring).
I do regret having affected the scoring for those two days.
It was wrong to 'experiment' whether one could pose as an anonymous player. This proves that one can't. I also wanted to find out how quick the responses could be in reading the question and then knowing the answer. It was way faster than any of the real top scores. Whether you believe it or not, the 'experiment' was concluded after the third go. There was no intention to cheat or claim credit for any score.
There is no decent explanation other than this, but you are probably not interested in my response anyway. Unthinking and stupid about sums it up.
There seemed little point in elaborating in my previous 'post', but at least Vulture liked the pictures. The 'Bye' is down to the assumption that I have committed an unforgivable act in doing this 'experiment' and would not be welcome. I also assumed the login would have been cancelled anyway.
If that's not enough for you, Tarquin, I don't know what else to say.
-
It'll probably have to go to committee, and down through every level until we reach the "nadir" or our hierarchy, which is Mince. (The plankton vote rarely swings it anyway.) Failing that, Roger can decide.
I'm for allowing you to stay on, especially if you send me £500.

I'm for allowing you to stay on, especially if you send me £500.
I'll let you stay for £400.

That's cheating! Tarks, sort him out.

You have to click on the cross in the top-right corner to activate "turbo mode".
Ha! That's one more of them out of the way... domination will be mine! Muahahahahaha!
*cough*

Neither of you are REAL policemen. :\
How do you know?
I'm the Chief Constable.
Hang on - shouldn't you be in prison for some skullduggery?

So that's what the cross at the top is for. Thanks Jack! Step aside tomorrow to allow Turbo Lil a clear shot

Quite right, Mincey, but Jack has a point, and under the new emergency rules that kick into force as a result of this incident, I duly declare the the person with the highest score for today is this month's winner, regardless of any further points to be accumulated.
Well done, Lucy!

:D

wohoooo that's the first for me!! got 10 right. Do I get a prize for today TT? ;D

Tarks, how have you logged into the forum twice?

Probably down to my rather splendid collection of browsers, Tom. Don't worry - there's only one TTTlll!

Seems I've missed all the fun ;D

I'm for allowing you to stay on, especially if you send me £500.

I'll let you stay for £400.

I assume you'll need my address.

I wish I could join in with Lil's alacrity, but alas, I wasted several seconds trying to find a red cross at the top of the page.

Don't bother looking...today it said

In case anybody is interested, I make that 4 hours, 57 minutes and 37 seconds.
Perhaps you dozed off?

Or thought you had 'submitted' the answers, then remembered 4 hrs and 56 minutes later.

Did some people run the marathon in that time?

Let's all try to get ten right in exactly 50 seconds today, yes? ;D
-
Let's all try to get ten right in exactly 50 seconds today, yes? ;D
Consider it done :)
-
Jack, I am seriously, seriously impressed by that... and not a little spooked! :o
-
Who's fiddling?
-
Aw, Peter had to go and spoil it all. No fiddling - just four tens in 50 seconds in a row.
Actually, since 'Quiz Peter' is patently not the same peter of this parish (his IP address doesn't match anyone's in here, and would indicate a Manchester location), I'm considering banning him altogether from the quiz for the following reasons:
a) He is not a contributing member of the Beau Peep forums.
b) He is boringly good at the quiz, and virtually unbeatable.
c) Because I can.
I'd be happy to hear arguments for or against, while I make up my mind, especially from Peter, should he in fact be a contributing member here under another name, and using a different computer.
-
And all my pacing efforts were for nothing... :(
Actually no, I did start out counting the seconds to try and time it, but ended up having to think about one of the questions, losing track of the time, and just clicking when done, sure I'd gone over the 50.
When it came up as 50, I assumed that it had glitched, and was giving everyone 50 seconds as the time regardless.
Sadly not.

Far be it for me to comment on this topic, but I thought that this 'Peter' was our 'peter', the one wot cant spel rite and is the puported initiator of our beloved Mince. What's the point of playing if he keeps winning and in amazing times.!!
-
I think we should handicap Malc while we are at it. In fact it would be so much nicer if just TTIII and me played.
-
I think we should handicap Malc while we are at it. In fact, don't let anybody else play. Just me and TTIII... I can beat that thicko easily.
If I were Tarks, I'd be feeling pretty insulted right now... ;)
-
Nah, TTIII knows the same things that I don't know, that's all.
-
I made a solemn vow not to be the first each day, (it's difficult not to be, seeing as we're the first civilized country to break the dateline , NZ being still populated by ignorant savages), but when I successfully avoided being the first, I went and forgot to play at all that day.
Being first means your score and time is up there for everyone to see, so if you were Peter and you saw that Malky only got 8 (and took 56 seconds to do it, and Tarks got 9, (with a 67 second time) then you can crack your knuckles and relax, knowing that even a 70 second finish will put you in first place if you get 10.
Conversely, if you see that Bilthehut got 10 and only took 50 seconds to do it, you know that the job is very simple - go for it as quick as poss and if you drop a point, too bad. This is why Peter always seems to get that irritating two seconds less than his nearest rival.
My other pathetic excuse is that I use a Wacom pen, which gives me accuracy and control in Photoshop, but not speed in a Trivia quiz. I could connect up a mouse too, but then I would be preparing for the competition and I think that's tantamount to cheating.
-

Sometimes I surprise even myself how fast I do it. But then back to the quiz...

Okay - I've made the question clear and democratic (see the top of the page). Please exercise your right. Or your left, if you're that way inclined.

I've added a bit of excitement to the vote.

I think Peter is Mince in the trivia challenge.
I don't know how sporting it would be to ban someone.
However, if you were going to ban someone, the first of the month would be ideal before they had too much invested in it [looks at Calendar - well lookie here it's the 1st of June]. Just saying.

I think it is very unsporting that we have a quiz player who seemingly isn't interested in being a part of the group that makes up the body of its contestants, and therefore is just a name that collects high scores. I admit that I'd be less concerned were Peter to be languishing at the bottom of the score list, but that isn't for my own sake, since it's been a long time since I was anywhere near the top. I just think that the ambience of the quiz is made by the fact we all know a little of each other through this forum.
However, I don't want to be an out and out meanie, so here's what I'm gonna do. Peter has the rest of this calendar month in which to sign up to this forum (indications are that this Peter isn't even a member here) with the same IP address as he uses for the quiz (i.e. - he uses the same computer - imposter Peter's will not be accepted), and to post at least a couple of messages on the boards to announce his arrival, and intention to 'belong'. If he does this, he stays in the quiz. If he doesn't, he goes.
Fair enough?
-
Oh Master of the Quiz. That seems a perfectly logical, fair and downright good egg idea.
Just one thought. Does he read the forum and is aware of his responsibilities should he wish to maintain his incredible scoring on our quiz. Or can you email him?
-
Nope, can't email him, nor would I. All he is is a name and an IP address. If he's playing the quiz, then he's online. If he's online and he wants to be a part of this happy gang, he'll be looking in. If he's looking in, he can do what is required, or not. I'm not chasing a name.

Oozing fairness and logic like that, you would soon make Senator at the World Council should you decide to join Nation States.

Well said, Tarks!
-
yup
-
After yesterday pathetic score. I'm declaring myself today's winner! Sorry Peter whoever you are, 10 questions in 36 seconds ???
-
I'm fed up with all the quiz questions being based around American trivia.
Bloody Americans and their posting quizzes on an America-based quiz site.
-
Ditto!
-
Never let it be said we at the Beau Peep Quiz don't listen to the concerns of our highly valued players. And so, just for Jack and Bill, the next two days' worth of quiz have been reset to be made up of questions about Australia.
You're welcome. 8)
-
Mutter mutter grumble etc.
-
Great. What I know about Australia could be written on a fly's balls and I LIVE here.

No pleasing some folks - what a bunch of whinging Poms! ..0

Thank you! What about the rest of the world, one country at a time?
-
Bring back the American based trivia!! or rest of the world at least!! Even Malc whose in Oz didn't do well :P
-
Well, it certainly made for a refreshing change from trying to compete with all the high scores.
I'd be in favour of Tarks picking obscure random categories every few days. It'd mix things up a bit.
-
Your Listening Admin has decided to act on advice, and your next set of questions has now departed Australia, heading for... ?
-
Great idea, TTIII !
-
Bring it on TT!! :D
-
Good idea, TIT II.
-
Bugger!
THat was almost as hard as my citizenship test.
-
Wow! I got as many right as peter, and in a shorter time.
I wonder if Peter is aware of the change in questions. (should there be a '?' after the previous sentence?)
-
Got 6 correct today! Can't wait for tomorrow :)
-
Someone knock on my door whilst doing today trivia, so annoying, my time registered at 380 minutes. Never mind!
-
Know how you feel!!
-
Right, I'm not playing any more. It's more like a lottery now.
-
It's probably going to be embarrassing tomorrow as the questions will be based on the UK. Will we be 'exported' if we get too many wrong?
-
BTW TTIII, the quiz has got more democratic and makes people think about the answers. Can't wait for someone to post a really large time but all 10 right and win (probably means they spent the time googling the answers).
-
Right, I'm not playing any more. It's more like a lottery now.
Same questions for everyone, Malc.
-

There are time penalties as well, Bill. Taking too long to get ten answers right can still be beaten by a quick nine, or even less. Googling carries that risk, I'd suggest.
-
Same questions for everyone, Malc.
Yes, and playing football in a swimming pool means the same conditions for everyone.
But I don't want to play football in a swimming pool.

No problem, Malc. If you only want to do the things you're good at, that's your prerogative. Looks like the variety is popular with quite a few others though, so we'll stick with it for a while.
-
The UK one was very popular with me today..personal lowest score....bring it on 8)
-
I couldn't resist any longer, so I had to play. Sorry, Lil, I pushed you a little further down, but you can ignore my score if you like...
I see what you mean about Peter. Ten correct in 28 seconds. I think it took me that long to find the red x on the credit check advert that appeared. Could Peter work for the quiz people?
-
I don't know whether you have noticed, you probably have as you do the quiz every day and I don't, but, Peter is actually Angela. Peter is one of their parakeets:
-
That was a good bit of detective work Tom.
I had a budgie called Peter when I was a kid - he wasn't a bright as Angela's budgie though.
-
I have invited Angela (and Peter) to join our happy throng, using the dialogue facility on the quiz site (well spotted, Tom - I hadn't noticed it had been used lately). Meanwhile, the jury is still out.
-
Wohooo , 8 correct on UK quiz! Shame on you guys who scored lower ;D Bring on Asia..
-
Just for you, Lucy...
I've been meaning to ask for a while - Nige didn't give you a hand setting your 'signature' by any chance?
-
Hand Setting Signature, what's that TT, will it give me advantage or benefit?
-
He's probably made it invisable to Lucy.
-
I didn't do very well today.
-
I guessed them all and got 5 right. This must be the way to do it.
Lucy and Peeps had better do the quiz today, just to see how the tourist industry fares.
-
Tarks, if I was winning the quiz I could see your
snark point, but I'm not, I frequently lose (individual rounds and monthly competition) and don't mind contributing, despite that.
If you're making a unilateral decision to change the nature of a competition which I enjoyed and which has more or less had the same flavour the entire time I've been taking part, I'll dib out, thanks, but don't make it sound like I'm taking my ball and going home. To paraphrase George Costanza, it's not me, it's you.
-
Signature:
That Peepmaster is such a stud. All man! Mmmmmmm.
Is that my signature ?
Apologies everyone. Peeps must be living in La la land ..it's a fantasy, i don't have opinion on the matter >:(
-
Blimey! this is so embarrassing, I knew more about UK than my country of birth.
I'll hang myself in shame.
Well done Bil!

Oh, come on, Malky! Look at the stats - you've been runner up for the past three months, in the top three for five of the past six months (and fourth for the one you missed). You may not have actually won the quiz in that time, but you aren't doing half badly. I changed the quiz for a couple of days after a complaint (one that had been expressed before) was made about its US bias. Unexpectedly, it seemed to be quite a popular move among some of the regulars, so I prolonged it a little and varied the questions.
Now, it takes me more time to do this, so I'm not desperate to make it a regular event, but if people are enjoying a little variety in this fun quiz for this month, I'm happy to see it through to the end of the month, changing the questions each day (I had thought that I was restricted to the dozen or so categories they allow you to choose from the drop down menu, but yesterday I discovered how to choose from many, many more subjects, hence the Filipino category).
Once the month is up, I shall revert back to set questions for the week (although Colin before me used to vary them from day to to day, albeit as a regular weekly routine, so what I've been doing isn't actually that new). But if this way of doing things proves popular (we may have another poll about it), then I see no reason why it can't happen every now and again.
Apart form any other benefit, it seems to have put Angela's budgie right off his stride.
And no, Malcolm - it's definitely you.
-
I got 4/10 in the quiz today, and every one of the ten answers I picked was a complete guess.
Additionally, if the quiz is about the Philippines, what was question 8 all about?
8. In season 1986/87, Dundee United reached the final of the UEFA cup. What was the aggregate score in the final, and who were United's opponents?
I mean, I don't mind guessing things to do with the Philippines, but obscure questions about some football team I've never heard of... that's just silly.
-
That was the only question I actually knew the answer to, Jack. I've no idea how it crept into the Philippines questions though - the Dundee United questions shouldn't be till tomorrow.
Incidentally, Malky is already well in the lead for this month.

Has someone been messing about? I know I looked at 10 questions about the Phillipines (or is it Philippines?)(not a Dundee United mention in any of them - not even No 8)
And what happened to Lucy's score - unless she did not post it. Why is the Peepmaster not participating, seeing as he should know so much of the subject, what with his travel business and all that.
Top 50 Scores So Far Today
Player Award Correct Seconds
1. Malky + 8 pts 6 66
2. bilthehut + 7 pts 5 61
3. MMCF + 6 pts 5 107
4. MincyPoo + 6 pts 5 110
5. Jack + 6 pts 4 65
6. Tarquintessential + 5 pts 4 112
7. Lil + 5 pts 3 83
8. Tom + 4 pts 2 129
The subject of Sunday's quiz has definitely changed from the Phillipines to Dundee United. And Monday's is also Dundee United.
-
Has someone been messing about? I know I looked at 10 questions about the Phillipines (or is it Philippines?)(not a Dundee United mention in any of them - not even No 8)
Well, the question actually asked who "United" beat. The fact that it was referring to Dundee Utd was only evident from the question's 'header', the bit written in red above each question that denotes what quiz it was take from.
And what happened to Lucy's score - unless she did not post it.
Lucy is MMCF. She's on the list you posted. Also, Mincypoo is Diane, in case you were wondering.
The subject of Sunday's quiz has definitely changed from the Phillipines to Dundee United.
So it has. Odd, that.
And Monday's is also Dundee United.
Can't wait... ..0
-
Ohh gosh, is it football tomorrow?
-
No, Lucy, it's 'Dundee United'.
Yes, I'm sorry the quiz appears to have changed to Dundee United today. For technical reasons, I had to make the change before the Midnight deadline, which, being an American website, would be in the middle of the night over here, so I made it a short while ago, in the hope that everyone who wanted to play today, had already done so today, and would not therefore be answering questions about Dundee United for Sunday's quiz.
All the questions have been set so that everyone should get the same ones, although there have been some glitches in the past regarding this. I think I have fixed the problem that saw a Dundee United question cropping up in today's quiz, but I do not understand why Bill should not have got that question when it looks like everyone else did.
Anyways, I'm getting a little weary of all this now, so I may well abandon the planned month of varying the questions and go back to a fixed set for every day.
The other option is for someone else to take over running the quiz. It needn't take up too much of anyone's time (unless you want to do what I've been doing this month). Any takers? Perhaps my stint as caretaker manager should come to an end now.
-
Yes, I do agree with Angry Of Cheltenham's stance on the US-bias questions, but I was prepared to accept the occasional baseball curveball as part of a US-based site.
My peeve is that the quiz represented a wall I was trying to climb, and the enjoyment was in the challenge, even if that challenge was simply trying to fire off answers in a quicker time. Then I turned up at the playground and found the wall dismantled and replaced with a seesaw and monkey bars.
I didn't mind being second or third over the wall, I liked the wall. I don't like monkey bars.
I'm now top of the rankings undeservedly, because it's a lottery and I guessed more than anyone else.
-
Okay, this is all getting too silly now. I've just taken today's quiz, and found the questions were an even mixture of Philippines and Dundee United, and the problem I thought I'd cured seems to now be worse. I was about to change it all back to the old set of questions when I noticed Diane has now also taken the quiz, and so that wouldn't be fair on her, so they stay the way they are for today at least.
Sorry, Malky, but if you think that firing off the answers quicker than any better a test of the player's skill than the past few days, I have to disagree. As you yourself have pointed out in your occasional in-depth analysis of our little fun quiz, even if you know the answer to every question in an instant, your time can be affected by the equipment you're using, the vagaries of the Internet itself, or even distractions from within your own environment.
It is also quite possible to 'learn' almost every answer to a particular category, by spending inordinate amounts of time 'practising' the quiz on the quiz site - as we all know (those who do the quiz regularly) questions are finite, and often repeated. Eventually, you could get to the stage where speed is the only real issue, and I suspect that may be the case with Angela's parakeet since it has almost certainly joined the quiz having looked for 'similar quizzes' on the site, and knows absolutely zip about Beau Peep. In such cases, it ceases to become a lottery and instead becomes a certainty that one player will win every time. For me, a lottery is more fun than that any day (I don't expect a ManU/Celtic fan to necessarily understand that point of view, of course). It's not cheating, but it is a little frustrating, not to say boring, for those who like to play as a fun extension of our happy little club, albeit a competitive one. Varying the questions so that it isn't the same category each time appears to combat that scenario quite well.
Anyway, as I said - I'm happy to have done my stint now. Who wants the reins? Malc?
-
I've never done the quiz Billy the Hut, but maybe I should start... I believe Lucy's signed me up.
-
Today I correctly guessed two answers about Dundee Utd, and two answers about the Philippines.
-

I only got 3 right, so you must have more lucky pixie dust than me.
We do seem to have generated some 'heated' discussion over this quiz. All we were commenting on was the excessive US-biased questions.
TTIII has done a sterling job in admin'ing this site and should be congratulated for putting up with us all.
-
Bloody It system !! They've taken our Internet link away, so I am using the official link (which removes stuff such as avatars and forbids other things - so much for progress)
Jack. Thanks for identifying Lucy & Diane - I didn't have a clue. Are you 'Jack'??
-
No, I'm
*looks at list of winners for previous months*
"Calvin".
Yes. I had to use that name because somebody who is clearly much thicker than me had already taken the name "Jack".

Ah - I had my suspicions. Right, I'm cancelling the Doncaster Rovers questions.
-
8 out of 10 today ! I'm hoping Peter will not play today, so I can stay in the top.
TT you done a great job, and I like variety , that makes it more fun :D
-
Nothing to fear from me, Lucy...I got 2 today but at least one was knowing who went from United to Rangers..my brother will be so proud :-\
-
Ah - I had my suspicions. Right, I'm cancelling the Doncaster Rovers questions.
I'd be highly surprised if you found any on there.
-
What happen to you Jack today, 4 correct answer, not like you at all.
And TT 1767 seconds? Did it take you that long to google the answer? ;D
-
I found that I had to guess most of them.
I didn't do a very good job of that.
-
And TT 1767 seconds? Did it take you that long to google the answer? ;D
Google? I could have gone to the library and back in that time. I haven't done it in ages, but I logged into the quiz just as they were shutting things down for their daily maintenance round abut 10am. I actually knew most of the answers too, and managed to guess those I didn't. And I was quite surprised that I wasn't last, given the time penalty. Thanks, Jack! :P

Always glad to be of help.

I thought I'd make them easy to give Mince a chance.
-
Sorry Bil, I'm faster than you 9 out of 10 , 65 sec :)
-
Maybe I've set he questions too easy...
-
What's this? Pick on Bill day? Is it cos I won yesterdays 'real' quiz?
-
And there's me, trying to be nice to Peeps as he made the effort to create a new quiz. Maybe he was jealous of the attention Tarks has been recieving lately?
-
Tarks,
Are we going to be subjected to another session of Dundee United questions tomorrow? Would that not be better set on Wednesday, to coincide with a VIP birthday?
P.s. In South of France at the moment, hence the different IP address.
-
Admin error. I have now completely eradicted Dundee United. Don't tell Roger. Or Malky...

Don't worry, I think they are used to it by now.
-
The dreaded 'maintenance cycle' bit me today. 2200 seconds for only 5 right - and no points!
-
:o I got the biological nomenclature one correct! I haven't the foggiest as to what a biological nomenclature is...
-
I do know that biological has something to do with washing clothes. Does nomenclature mean the lack of men cluttering up an area, or women's fashion? So, perhaps it has something to do with washing women's clothing?
-
Well, I now got the biological nomenclature one correct too, seeing as that was the answer. ..0
-
See how helpful I can be?
-
Hokay then. Could anyone please explain question 9 from today's quiz?
THE QUESTION: Jennifer O'Neill did an ad for Off-Track Betting (in New York): 'Jenny and the Bets'.
THE CHOICES:
Elton John
Billy Joel
Rod Stewart
Buddy Holly
PART OF THE ANSWER:
'Bennie and the Jets'. Close enough.
I actually got it right... I just don't get it.
-
I got the song as well. Then who sang it? I think I put Elton John.
-
Elton John sang "Benny and the Jets".
I'm guessing whoever set the quiz missed out "Whose song was the campaign based on?"
-
Geeezz thanks Roger, you just gave away one of the answer! Spoil sport, we take this trivia seriously now look what you done.
Well guys, I'm away tomorrow, but will still be playing, when I get the chance . Have fun! ;D
-
Well done Bill the Hut!

That question about vegetables today...I didn't even understand the question.

That question about vegetables today...I didn't even understand the question.
Some people come through with lots of different vegetables, but I only put one number in. This is because they got the food from the 1500.
Your Answer: salad bar
For the salad bar, we have to put in different tare numbers depending on what container the people put the food in. That way the customer isn't charged for the container.
I got the right answer by a calculated guess (my other one would have been 'produce man', which would have been wrong. I still don't understand what '1500' means.
-
It's a good job that I keep forgetting to play, if they're throwing questions like that in now... I'm not actually sure if there's a question there. :-\

Nov 10
8 players played during the month.

2. MincyPoo (114 points, 2 wins)
3. bilthehut (107 points, 5 wins)
4. Lil (95 points, 5 wins)
5. MMCF (79 points, 0 wins)
6. fyodor (70 points, 1 wins)
7. Tarquintessential (63 points, 1 wins)
8. zestywhite (9 points, 0 wins)
-
That was supposed to be an arrow pointing to your name Calven, not a "wince". This is how wars are started.
-
Who's "Calven"?
-
Congratulations to the winner this month - it wasn't me for sure, I couldn't be bothered looking up who it was, but whoever it was must be pretty proud and happy, well done.
-
'Calvin' has still not joined the BP Forum (unless in disguise), despite Tarks' comments a few months back.
-
Er, I think you'll find that Calvin joined the forum, as Calvin, nearly three years ago, Bill, and has made 77 posts so far. You'll find him on the members' list, just four places below your own entry (if you're viewing alphabetically).
What comments did I make a few months back?

Apologies, Tarks, I got confused in my senility. My memory thought Calvin, when I really meant Peter (and not our Peter). I checked back to page 46 of this thread. How time has flown since then.
Sorry, Calvin, for confusing you with the non-forum Peter.

This quiz is getting tougher by the day. I even got one wrong that I'd answered correctly. No, I'm not disputing that their answer was wrong and mine was right - my 'right' answer was the same as their declared 'right' answer, but they still marked it as wrong (screen capture proof available - but not until tomorrow ;D ). Bugger!

Was it the divorce question, cos I got the same response?
-
That's the one. If anyone's not done it yet, I warn you - don't get it right! ;D
-
So, did anyone get it 'right'? And if so, which wrong answer was it?
-
I'm a little dismayed to find that very few of the quiz regulars are investing their earnings in the truly fabulous awards on offer. Diane, in particular, has amassed a grand total of 9,477 Fun Trivia Bucks so far - that's enough to buy a personal aircraft carrier and a submarine, and still have enough left over for a blue unicorn and your very own cow. What on Earth are you waiting for, Woman? Fill yer boots!
-
I'm saving up for a ball of knitting wool.

-
When did this quiz get really really hard?
-
For the last four months in a row the results were:
First Calvin
Second Tarquinessential
Third MincyPoo (Diane)
I have a plan to move up in the standings. I will set up a new competition but not tell Calvin about it. Actually I don't think I will tell anyone else about it then I will win every month. And I will have easy questions and the winner will get Smarties.
-
Ha - I've been doing that for the last three months, Diane, but my winner gets Maltesers.
-
I too prefer Maltesers - I have a crappy set-up on my quiz. :(
-
I tried to join in again either last month or the month before or the month before.
But the questions were really hard, so I gave up instead.
-
not very bright 3 out of 10

not very bright 3 out of 10
Well keep at it...some days are 3s some days are 9s. :)
-
:)
-
I haven't played in ages.
Are the questions still looping around like they used to? Because if so, I have no chance against those who've been playing regularly.
(That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it)
-
Results for December 2012:
1. Lil (129 points, 12 wins)
2. Calvin (125 points, 11 wins)
3. Jack (119 points, 5 wins)
4. Tarquintessential (104 points, 2 wins)
5. MincyPoo AKA Diane (100 points, 1 wins)
6. fitbawdaft (8 points, 0 wins)
7. zestywhite (5 points, 0 wins)
Congrats to Lil.

My time today was 40472 seconds - the internet went off when I tried this morning so I thougt I would have another go now (when I remembered) - didn't know that the machine was waiting all day for me to come back - now I feel bad for it.
-
I forgot about this game - but I see others have kept playing all these years :)
I felt proud that I remembered both my user name and password - that should be worth some bonus points.
-
Welcome back!
Tarquinessential and I battle on and Bilthehut pops in on the 1st of each month. Glad you remembered the details to re-join the select group ;D
-
It was guess the answers today, and I got 50% right. Amazing.
-
Lil, that was as crushing a blow as it gets! I bow to your mighty quizness! You didn't even need that one.
-
Yeah, right on! No idea what this is all about.
-
Me neither.
-
Was that the day we had the same result but a few seconds between us? You should join us again, Mince.
Fancy there being 55 pages for this thread! Lovely to see the comments from old friends.
-
I think it was 2 seconds, Lil, and both very fast times. But you were already unassailably in the lead, so it was only ever going to be a minor moral victory for me anyway. 10 out of 10 in (something like) 73 seconds. "Beat that, Lil!" I said to myself, as I metaphorically punched the air. Next time I looked, you had...by two seconds. Crushed!
I can't remember the last time, or even if, Mince took part, Lil ('MinceyPoo' is actually Diane, for reasons best known to her). I think he's chicken, like the rest of them...[steps aside and waits for the Marty McFly Response to kick in]
-
I'm too lazy to be chicken.
-
So sorry Tarqs! I didn't even know I was in the lead because I just compare scores at the end of play each day. Hope this doesn't mean I have to take it more seriously ;)

Lil, click on the 'Standings' tab near the top of the page, then the 'Hall Of Fame' tab. It'll be pleasant reading for you, and your adrenaline for the quiz will go through the roof!
