Hello fellow peeps! My name is Tony Barker and I used to live in a small village in the Highlands of Scotland called Newtonmore. Now I cant remember if it was Roger or Andrew that lived there, but they drew a cartoon stip of Beau for my father (John Barker) now dececsed, quite a few years ago now when he used to work in Kingussie. Just want to know if it was Roger or Andrew and if they remember doing it. Thanks in advance.
Tony ;D ;D

All depends where you think "this" Newtonmore is :D , btw is there something else underneath your post, because if there is I cant see it lol (at work and the comp is a bit crap) ;D
-
Tony, I'm from Dalwhinnie, ten miles down the road from you in Newtonmore. Regulars on here know that my memory is not the best so I'm afraid I can't place your Dad. I used to play football for Kingussie and socialised there a lot but we're going back over 30 years. Where did your Dad work?
-
Ad Hutchison the plumbers opposite the chippy :D or before that the Craig Mhor Hotel in Newtonmore (before they turned it into flats :-\)

There's nothing under the picture in my post, other than a small signature that mentions "Mince". (It's not the Scottish meaning of the word, as in "rubbish"; it refers to the bloke who's the caretaker on here). Mind you, on second thoughts...
-
I have been reading a few posts on here and yes your signature is quite apt! Oh and what did you mean by "this" Newtonmore?
-
As opposed to any other Newtonmore Roger hangs round.
-
Didnt think he still lived in the area !!! :P What with all his wealth from the books and the Andy Capp fruit machines lol ;) ;)

Peepmaster is the tea lady.
We also call him marshmallow.

Having spent the past 2 hours glued to the screen reading all the posts I can honestly say its the most hilarious forum I have ever been on. My sides are so sore from laughing that I have hardly done a seconds work in the time.(good job I work for sky so working dont come into it much) I think Roger could make a whole new strip called "Peep and Mince" !!! :D ;D
-
Glad you're enjoying it.
Welcome to the board.
-
We used to have women on this board too, MadJock, until Mince scared them all off.
-
Unless all have you have all met each other, how do you know that anyone is infact male?? :)
-
Isn't it obvious that Peepmaster is a complete girl?
-
Dunno about that but ill get my wife to sign up and see if you can scare her away lol

Mince, make up your mind; I thought you said his name was 'crumble'!
-
Oh yes, Crumble as well.
-
Tony, I've spoken to a friend in Dalwhinnie who remembers your Dad working in the hotel in Newtonmore---I'm afraid it still escapes me. It's probable that I didn't really know him very well but gave him the cartoon on one of my trips up North (I haven't lived there for 30 years). Anyway, I'm glad you found your way here!
-
Hello Madjock and welcome!
-
Thanks for the reply Roger, oh and I have asked my mum to look out the drawing that you did and have asked her to take a picture(or send the original ) to me and I will post it on here to see if it jogs your memory :D and ty Tom

I have a time-share week in Aviemore I bought in 1987, if that's of any relevance?
And I used to play shinty for Tayforth Camamanachd, as well as my secondary school team. I was once knocked unconscious in Kingussie when my head intercepted a caman (shinty stick) in full swing. It was entirely my fault; I also played a lot of football at the time, and I momentarily forgot which game I was playing and attempted to header the shinty ball in mid flight...just as one of my opponents was tacking a full-blooded swing at it. I recall coming around a few moments later, and being very concerned that my gushing blood was ruining their nice green pitch.
After a fruitless search in the village for a doctor, I actually returned to the pitch to rejoin the game. For a very brief spell, I enjoyed great freedom on the ball, my unfortunate marker (who had initially thought he'd killed me apparently) being too scared to tackle me in case I was stupid enough to repeat my earlier folly. We were both teenagers - I do hope he recovered enough to enjoy a reasonable playing career after that. Eventually though, I had to come off again, when I started seeing three balls on the pitch. The worst thing was that they were taking the school sports photographs the following day, and mine was the only face in the shinty team picture covered in Elastoplasts.
Anyway, I digress. Welcome, madjock!

I dont know if I'm allowed to post the address of a web site on here, but its to do with Aviemore and how it used to be like in the hay days of the 70's and 80's. If not I will pm everyone with the site address, because even if you have never been to Aviemore before, its still a great site to look at. And for those of us lucky enough to visit Aviemore, when it was still a nice place to visit, im sure you will enjoy recalling those hazy crazy days of the ice rink and such. : :D ;D
And thanks for the warm welcome from everyone. :)
-
I've been through Aviemore a couple of times. It is rather commercialised now, I have to admit, but not in an unpleasant way. You can post the link if you want MJ.
-
Thanks Peepmaster. Its www.auldaviemore.co.uk ;D Enjoy.
-
And a welcome from me too Madjock.
And for the record Mince didn't scare me away I had the sh stomcach flu.
Your town looks very pretty. :)
-
Mince don't scare me none, either...hello Madjock. I'm Roger's much older sister (before he says it) and Hutcheson's did all the plumbing work for us when our fmaily had the Grampian in Dalwhinnie..it's a small world...and speaking of Aviemore, I had my 21st family dinner in one of the hotels there when the centre was brand new :o
-
Thanks for the welcome Diane and Diamond. I actually lived in Newtonmore Diane, but often went through to Aviemore on a weekend with my parents. Was the Grampian anywhere near the distillery, as I used to go to school with one of the lads who's father ran the place (stronach I think his name was). I left the area in October 1990, and have been longing to go back, but after speaking to a few of my old friends, the idea is becoming less and less attractive. But maybe I will visit with my wife and kids sometime just to show them what they are missing. :D ;D

Hi madjock! Welcome to the friendly Beau Peep forum. I am a female friend of Mince's. He invited me to join this board. That's why I am here and why I post sometimes.

Okay. I've lost the bet, Tarquin. It seems Mince does have a friend...

Are you sure she's not one of his imaginary friends?
-
Who says "I'm a female friend of Mince's"?
That would be like a short person having a "friend" stop in and say "I''m a 6"2" friend of Mince's".
And who but an English teacher would have a clue as to where to put that apostrophy in Mince's - it's all very fishy to me.
-
I can vouch that Calypso is not Mince's imaginary friend. That's Michelle Pfeiffer.
-
:o Calypso is Michelle Pfeiffer???
-
It could be anyone for a fiver...

-
Is '-' a symbol for a rude word, Calypso?
-
- means "You're in trouble."
"Whatever." means you're in loads of trouble.
"Fine." means you're in real trouble.
"Whatever, moron." means you have gone up in her estimation.

Hello, madjock, and thanks for that link - a real blast from the past for me. :) I was in Aviemore for a couple of months in the summer of 1975 - I think probably July/August, but couldn't be sure. Worked in Caird's ski/gift shop for some of that time and visited a couple of times after that, then visited again while passing through with my children in 1998, I think. I actually knew a couple of the people in the photos, which was what really took me back.
-
Your very welcome Joan ;D Ilived in the area from 1975 until 1990, when i joined the Royal Navy. My parents used to live in Newtonmore until 1996 then they moved back to Cleveland. I havn't been back since 2001 but i am looking forward to going to a Kingussie High School reunion in August/Spetember time this year.
-
Yes, I also fondly recall trips to the ski centre in Aviemore when it was brand new and a was a child (sorry, Lil!). I recall in particular the giant 'dishes' fountain in the heart of the complex, and small coin-operated electric cars for kids to race around the hexagonal paving slabs on the central plaza. It was a hugely exciting place for kids of all ages back then.
It had all gone into steep decline by the time I bought my time-share week up at the new Dalfaber Village annex, and over the past 20+ years I've been going up there, I've seen it dragged even further down, with the demolition of the last few remaining 'attractions', namely the swimming pool, ice rink, cinema, and finally the go-cart track. However, in the past three or four years, there seems to have been a bit of an upturn, with a new shopping complex put in (albeit at tourist prices), a number of new and varied holiday accommodation blocks, and a beautiful new swimming pool. The signs of growth are there.
Of course, Aviemore's biggest problem has been the change in climate over the years, with no guarantee of good skiing weather any more, coupled with the ease of access to slopes all over Europe and the rest of the world these days. But then that never was the attraction for me, and I think it's successful repackaging will have far more to do with it being the gateway to some of the most outstanding natural beauty on the planet, which it undoubtedly is. If you've never been, you're missing out!
End of nostalgic travelogue - sorry!
-
There was talk of the centre, a few years back now, that it was going to be all enclosed, but nothing ever came of it. And I have heard that the new swimming pool there, is very expensive and not that good either. And I didn't know that they had taken away the go-kart track either, shame, because I used to love them as a kid :(
-

Well, it looks great from the outside, MJ, but yes, I do seem to recall it was quite expensive. We didn't use it because the one at Dalfaber is free to residents...not that I'm tight or anything.
-
Dont blame you TTIII, why pay when you dont have to ;D There are quite a few pettitions on the web, on various sites, to try to get the centre back to its former glory. But like you said, with the weather not as good as it used to be, the chances of that are slim. Saying that, I regulary look on the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald site, and they reported that this year skiing days were up almost 68% on last season, which cant be a bad thing ;D
