I remember discussing favourite films and books on here several times but I'm not sure if we got round to T.V. shows. (I'm guessing the words "Doctor" and "Who" might be mentioned by a certain somebody). Anyway, as a kid, I vaguely recall peering at a snowy, black and white screen, trying to watch something called "Cabin in the Clearing"---a scary programme about pioneers in a log cabin, surrounded by hostile, Mohican Indians. Later on, but still in the black and white era, I fell in love with Lucy, Dick van Dyke and, especially, Bilko. Comedy was always my thing. Over the years, there were many shows that became unmissable. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore, Spike Milligan, The Smothers Brothers, Monty Python, Taxi, Cheers, Mash------all the way up to Alan Partridge, The Office, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Scrubs. I'm sure there are more that I've forgotten. On the Drama front, everybody I knew stayed in to watch The Boys From The Blackstuff and I, Claudius. These were the days when only the rich had video recorders and pubs' takings dropped dramatically when these shows went out. As I said, I'm sure there are many more that I've forgotten....

I wasn't allowed to watch Quatermass, Peter, as I was too young at the time but I remember the adults being scared to death by it. Something about a crashed Alien craft found in the London underground system?

That was the third one the two earlier ones were better .
The first was when they sent a rocket into space and of the crew only one survived but was gradually turning in to a alien.
The second was a meteor shower that of alien that was turning people into a kind of zombies
the third was the unearthing of an alian spaceship in the under ground station Quatermas and the Pit.
Because of our age,s the first was the most scary we hid behind the sofa when the scary bits came on.

The Wire is an American television drama series set and produced in Baltimore, Maryland. Created, produced, and primarily written by author and former police reporter David Simon, the series was broadcast by the premium cable network HBO in the United States. The Wire premiered on June 2, 2002 and ended on March 9, 2008, with 60 episodes airing over the course of its five seasons.
Each season of The Wire focuses on a different facet of the city of Baltimore. They are, in order: the drug trade, the port, the city bureaucracy, the school system, and the print news media. The large cast consists mainly of character actors who are little known for their other roles. Simon has said that despite its presentation as a crime drama, the show is "really about the American city, and about how we live together. It's about how institutions have an effect on individuals, and how?whether you're a cop, a longshoreman, a drug dealer, a politician, a judge [or] lawyer, you are ultimately compromised and must contend with whatever institution you've committed to."[1]
Despite never seeing great commercial success or winning any major television awards,[2] The Wire has frequently been cited by critics as one of the greatest television series of all time.[3][4][5] The show is recognized for its realistic portrayal of urban life, artistic ambitions, and uncommonly deep exploration of sociological themes.
Superb.

Callan was, indeed, a terrific series. Peter, the "small Scottish actor" was Russell Hunter who died several years ago. Last year, I had the great fortune to have a few drinks with his widow, Una McLean, a wonderful actress in her own right. She is an absolute delight. Before I met her, I'd been told that Russell had owned an Andy Capp original which she'd given away after his death and had regretted doing so. When I presented her with one that I'd written, (apologising that it wasn't by Reg Smythe) she literally screamed with delight and couldn't thank me enough. Una is approaching 80, still working hard and, after a couple of drinks in the theatre where I'd watched her perform, dragged me across the road for a couple more in the nearest pub. Like I said, an absolute delight.

Just how popular was this series?
-
I don't know. It was a kiddie show. I thought it was funny. Now I think it's kind of grating, but pretty clever.
-
Well, yes. The monkeys are/were better actors than some of the human ones I've seen, but I bet they didn't get paid the equivalent in bananas!
-
Loads of PG Tips tea breaks though.

I have always wondered what Peepmaster did in his early years.

Loved it!
-
It was a bit limp, as though it had not been thought through properly.

Loved it!
-
It also suffered from needless repetition.

I have decided to expand. This is a great sketch---and not just because of Newhart's delivery which, as always, is nigh on perfect. It lampoons the ridiculous amounts of money psychiatrists charge, the Freudian (or Jungian) theories they desperately try to attach to any condition and the over-complication of even the simplest of problems.
"Stop it."
That's just a great solution to ANY problem.
-
I liked the idea.
But I disagree with you on Newharts delivery. Half the time he looked as though he had forgotten his lines. It simply does not match the sheer brilliance of his timing, intonation and delivery in his monologues.
-
Well, you have to accept that this was probably a sketch show where he was handed a script with little time to rehearse and was using cue-cards. I still think he was great.
By the way, do you think if I'D typed "Newharts delivery" without an apostrophe, you'd have let it pass without comment?

Cutting edge, Mincey - cutting edge.

That didn't half bring back memories, Tarks!
Of what? You watching a silly programme?
-
That was a fabulous Bob Newhart sketch. I've always loved his delivery. One of the first LPs I ever bought was a collection of his stuff, such as Driving Instructor, and Introducing Tobacco to Civilisation.
-
"Exactly how fast were going when your previous driving instructor jumped from the car?"
"The door to my office has always been open. I think you know why it's always been open. That's gone. I want that back."
"If the plane is going to crash, you will know immediately because the co-pilot starts to run up and down the aisle shouting 'We're going to crash!' In fact, sometimes it's difficult to make out what he's screaming - at least, it has been in the past."
-

"Mince is a gibbering idiot."
-
Thank God you're back, Peeps. Perhaps now we'll get some proper grammar on Mince's posts.
-
I've been viewing from afar, but keeping quiet. I've rolled my eyes on more than one occasion at the contributions of Mince, however.
-
You can't have a go at me for something that Mr Newhart said.
-
Truth be told - preparation is key....
