My lifetime struggle with Humpty Dumpty.
« on: June 06, 2014, 09:07:06 PM »
An extremely large egg is sitting on a wall. It is unclear if it is boiled or not. It falls off the wall. For some reason, Royalty decides to get involved and the King sends in ALL of his horses and ALL of his men to sort out the situation. (I can't help thinking a doctor, or even a chicken farmer, would have been a better idea). According to the tale, all the King's horses and all the King's men couldn't put Humpty together again. Did the King SERIOUSLY think a horse was capable of reassembling a broken egg? Okay, let's assume this tale was not meant to be taken literally. Like many children's rhymes, it is allegorical---there is a deeper meaning. Right, we've got a huge, broken egg and a King who thinks horses can piece bits of shell together.
Help me.

Clearly, there was no assumption that a horse could be anything other than transport to the Kings men. From this, we can deduce that they were an early form of support services, the ambulance service for example, that were rushed to the scene of the accident. The fact that they were thus "scrambled" allows us to state that, in his original position, Mr Dumpty must not have been fully hard boiled.

It may also be possible, though less likely, that the Kings men were forensic detectives, hence why they were concerned about Mr Dumpty being pieced together in the hope of unseen evidence becoming apparent in the subsequent reconstruction of poor Mr Dumpty's broken body...maybe a hand print from a shove, the tell tale signs of spooning to the head etc.

We may never know. What we can say however, is that if this is an allegorical tale, and there are lessons to be learned, it's that if you aim to rise to lofty heights, you better be damned sure who's behind you because at some point the baddies will engineer your downfall and sometimes no matter who you know, they won't be able to save you.

Either that or it's just a rhyme with a catchy tune.    ;)

Boiled eggs and soldiers have always gone together.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

I think you need to get out more, Roger.
Says he who has spent the last few days furiously going through thousands of cartoon strips because I'm sure Beau and Dennis had a debate about this subject some years ago, and it's driving me potty 'cos I can't find it.
