Making money out of people who believe things you think are stupid
« on: September 27, 2015, 10:52:47 AM »
There are people who believe in homeopathy, astrology, graphology, parapsychology, biorhythms, crystal healing and other things deemed to be unscientific. Do you think making money from people (by charging for medicines, classes, books, appointments etc) who believe in such things is wrong if you believe the subject is completely rubbish? Or should you have to believe in the subject to make money from it?

I think you are trying to mix morality with the business of making money, never a good plan.   Most people who are trying to sell something think their target audience is either stupid or ignorant, check out advertising for proof of that, and generally don't care about the ethics.   That's why I love Americans, they form one of my "alternative" pension plans, if you say it loud enough, and often enough, and throw in some "proof" they'll not only believe you they'll actually send you money...more than once!

Short answer, no it isn't wrong to make money from people who believe things you think are stupid, there are so many dumb beliefs out there it's literally inevitable you will make money from stupidity.

Yes it is wrong.  But you may as well take their money anyway - they would only spend it on Chia Pets.

Ah, so you're of the opinion that if they're going to waste their money, it might as well be you they give it to.

I guess if you tell them up front that what they believe in is stupid, and they still want to believe in it, then you're only offering an honest service: "Buy two bags of nonsense and get one free."
