Thanksgiving
« on: October 09, 2010, 09:17:59 PM »
It's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada.

My son is home from uni (haven't seen him for 10 weeks - haven't seen much of him anyway - in the basement playing the new Halo with his brother).

I am cooking turkey dinner on Sunday - hubby's parents and sister and her family are driving up and I invited a couple of single friends over - so I will be cooking for about 13 people. I made it easy on myself though and bought 4 pumkin pies and boxes of stuffing mix. I do however have 30 cinnamon buns on the rise - first time I've baked in months.

Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday - love the autumn. It is always good to think upon the things that make your life happy. You guys make me happy.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanks for reminding me, Diane. I must Skype the one and only daughter in Toronto with my good wishes.

Have a great time and can I have your recipe for cinnamon buns; the last recipe I tried was rubbish!

Do you guys in the UK still have some kind of harvest festival with a day off work?

I don't have a recipe Vulture - I use my trusty dough bucket (from the 70s) and just add stuff - these ones are quite yellow as the egg yolks today were VERY yellow - I gave the chickens some stale lentils a few days ago  :)

This year is the first in the last eight that I won't be going to a Harvest Festival at our village church, sadly, but now that my better half's two little 'uns are both at secondary school (and not so little any more), I'm not entitled to take up one of the limited seats for the event, that is] usually over-subscribed by the families of the local primary school kids, who always put on an utterly charming collection of songs, poems and cardboard cutout vegetables to give thanks for the annual harvest.

I'm really going to miss it. Actually, I think I already have, as I'm pretty sure it was this week. So, yes, Diane, Harvest Festivals do still go on (although I never attended any up in Scotland that I can recall), but I'm not aware of people getting the day off for them.
I apologise, in advance.

Happy Thanksgiving, Diane!  Enjoy your dinner and spending time with your son, when he pops up from his lovely new room in the basement - hope he liked and appreciated it!

That is too bad Tarqs - you should put on your own show - make your better half's two kids put on a show in the living room for you guys - invite the neighbours around and collect food for the food bank.  If I lived close by I for sure would be a pear or maybe an eggplant...something that would go with my figure.

Yes Joan - Evan was pleased - I went on to do a MAJOR clean up of the basement. It is quite nice down there now.

Had a fun game of Trivial Pursuit with the kids - the boys cheated like crazy helping each other out - giving their Dad all the easy questions and giving me all the hard ones even if I rolled a one.  ..0 Kate (age 11) took it all too seriously and calmly got up and quit the game and said that she could couldn't play with cheaters and would not sit between them.

Diane, the first thing I thought of when I read this was that Kate will never make a politician!

That's a lovely idea, Diane, and I'm sure the younger of the two (girl, 11) would be well up for it, being a natural and enthusiastic entertainer. Her brother (13) grunts. And we hardly ever see him. In fact, for all we know, he's in the basement with your boys...

I am reminded of Mark Twain's advice involving young sirs, incorporating barrels, bungholes and bungs.  The other half would not let me try the theory out though.

Could easily have been before the big clean up - we once had cousin Eric down there for a week without seeing him.
