Floods in Australia

How are you making out Joan and Malc?
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

How are you making out Joan and Malc?

I find them both quite easy to understand.

Well yes, but then we're not talking to them on the phone are we.

As far as I know, Malc is okay---at least, for the moment. He lives in Queensland, where it's all happening, but had escaped the worst. Hopefully, he can update us soon.

Hi all, I'm doing fine, the floods are terrible of course but they are devastating different areas.
In Brisbane and SE Queensland generally, people talk about " '74 levels" which refers to the huge flood of 1974, where the Brisbane River burst its banks and drowned cows were discovered in the multi-storey car parks, etc, etc.
There's widespread prediction that these floods will exceed '74 levels, but I think we've seen the worst (and the worst has been bad enough, believe me).
At the moment twelve people confirmed dead, with (possibly) more to come. There have been some awful stories. No-one wants to see more rain, nor an increase in the catchment area levels as the dams release water from the reservoirs, but the irritating Australian media are virtually willing bigger floods upon us, the better to keep their mediocre staff journalists gainfully employed.

There are TV helicopters galore, yet the most heart-wrenching footage is from mobile phones and camcorders, as you might expect.
I was in the offices of the local Murdoch paper yesterday talking to editors and they were constantly interrupted by people running in and out with the latest updates. They were having a ball, believe me. One of the most often used phrases was "yes, we've got bright blue skies this morning but don't be fooled, there's worse to come..." The buggers aren't ready for this gig to end, and they're hoping the fat lady delivers a couple of extra encores.

Oh, and don't worry about Joan. Sydney? Flooding? Phhfff!

Glad you're still safe and sound, Malc. I've just watched the BBC six o' clock news and it's the lead story over here. Some heart-breaking footage and---I'm sorry to say---they seem to reckon that things will get worse before they get better. Stay safe!

It's just after 9 in the morning here and news has come through of an "underwater grave site" as the TV reporter put it, in a town called Grantham, just to the west of us. Reports from onlookers suggest bodies trapped in cars under a bridge or overpass, some of them floating. I hope it's ridiculous exaggeration.

I tried to post this earlier, but it wasn't having it ...

Kate asked me yesterday if we could get flooded out here.  I was happy (believe me!) to reassure her that we're about 200 metres above the nearest big river and the sea and our house is actually on the highest point of the hill.  There are parts of Sydney prone to flooding, but as Malc so eloquently put it, I don't think they've ever had anything comparable to Queensland at the moment.

It's very windy here at the moment - I was most annoyed because a big gust blew over and broke a plant pot last night and then I thought ... Phhfff! Get a grip, Joan!

So yes, I'm fine, just a bit gobsmacked at the state of Brisbane.  Thanks for thinking of us, Diane!  :-*

Here's a little bit of footage from earlier on this morning.
