Ukrainian Easter Eggs
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:01:16 PM »
I ordered some supplies (dyes, beeswax, kistkas) so that we can have a go at this ancient craft. There are lots of people of Russian decent in Alberta so there is a lot of Ukrainian culture to be found. In Vegreville, Alberta there is the world's largest Pysanka for instance.

Doesn't this look fun :-)

That's fascinating, Diane. He makes it look easy, though. I bet it's not! Good luck with your ones. :)

I ordered 6 kistkas/wax patties - I thought this would be a fun activity to do around the kitchen table with our visitors (who usually come up at Easter). I think you are right Joan and they probably wont look as good as his - even where they sold the supplies they showed a close-up of a much less than perfect egg on the order page so as not to raise our hopes.  :)

This is what our first ones looked like - they look pretty good if you are just looking at them and not the photos of eggs in the book of instructions that we were following.

Thanks DL  :) we ended up not getting any visitors this year but I hope to still do a few more eggs today anyway.

They do look good, Diane.  The viewer should remember that the colours are not just painted or drawn on, but stained in turn by the addition/removal of wax.

Thanks for that Bill - the viewer should also remember that the wax can get very hot!

My hubby did the one pictured front left - he got really quite into it and did a nice job.
