Come Dine With Me
« on: December 06, 2009, 10:54:29 AM »
One of my favourite programmes ever. Just love the narrator's comments throughout.

Maybe we should have an exercise like that, where we all traipse round to each others' houses to enjoy the culinary delights we've all prepared for each other, awarding points for the efforts created.

Mind you, I expect Mince's offerings would be tripe, bananas, nuts and crackers.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

Hey!  Now you're talking...not World Cup, that is...agree wholeheartedly, especially about the voice over and editing following his comments  ;D

Roger (and my mum) inspired me to figure out how to make my own soup.
On Saturday I went to the supermarket to pick up a leek, some potatoes, lentils, carrots and bacon stock cubes.

I then went about making the soup. My sister-in-law did offer up a couple of tips (but let's not bring sex into this FNAAAAAAR!!) which I found very useful, and which I believe made all the difference, and the soup has turned out extremely well. I may never buy packet or tinned soup again.

I made enough for about six servings, all for the cost (equivalent) of about three pounds.

'Bacon stock cubes' sound interesting. Who makes them? We only get boring old chicken, beef or vegetable here. Where's the rest of the recipe?

I use Knorr ham cubes for soup, Vulture...doesn't compare with a proper smoked ham shank but not bad.

Yes, but it's difficult to get hold of a ham shank now, and the cube might be a good substitute. I'll google Knorr and see what flavours they do over here.

Well, knorr.co.uk mentions 'ham' so it looks promising. Will try Sainsbury's next time I'm in there! Thanks D.L.

Yes - I get Knorr Ham Stock cubes here. That's the basis of the soup's success, Malc - Lentils and a stock cube.

(Gawd - I almost sound like a Fanny Craddock, or something.)

Peeps, I'd opt for the 'something' and leave Fanny Craddock out of this!

Or just leave the "Craddock" out...

Fanny and Johnny. Honestly, these days those would be made-up names in a Harry Enfield sketch.

The bacon cubes are made by Continental, I think.

Here's the recipe:
Soak the lentils for a while.
Chop the white part of the leek into little bits (I slice it down the middle, quarter it, then chop it up smaller.
Do the same with 1 carrot.
Dice 4 potatoes, leave the jackets on if they're washed tatties.

Chuck the items you've diced into a frying pan (or wok) with butter and lightly fry them for a couple of minutes. Add the stock cubes at the end, along with a bit of water. Allow to simmer for another couple of minutes.
Chuck it all into a pan of boiling water, add your (drained) lentils. Boil until it thickens a little, check to make sure carrots and spuds are soft.

Don't let it all get too thick, as the soup then becomes a stew, and after you saved some in the fridge it congeals. This isn't a disaster as such, the next day you just scoop out a dod, add water and boil up a new plateful.

Oh, I didn't use the onion.

There. Nothing so anoying as someone who's new to something handing out instructions on how to do it, is there?

Yup!

Snip edge of packet. Empty contents into mug. Add boiling water. Stir. Get back to work.
I apologise, in advance.

Not that I'm trying to be superior or anything, but when I give a recipe to someone I actually make the dish and take photographs at every stage. I then just email the photos to them. Sorted!

Oh, for goodness sake, all right then...

That's better.... but... what flavour soup would I end up with, and where would I get a 'vigour' to stir it with?

That one was chicken, but the beauty of my method is you can have a different flavour with each subsequent helping, which is not available using Malc's convoluted method. Vigours are available at most decent hardware stores, usually near the Vim.
I apologise, in advance.
