Cryptic Crossword
« on: March 03, 2010, 09:03:05 PM »
To give the old brain a bit of work out, I've just started getting into cryptic crosswords. They're a bit addictive -- and very infuriating.  I'm doing quite well on a prize crossword at the moment, but I've come to griding halt with these:

Rounders-player reverses the summit [8]
- A - - - - - P

Kitchen with supersonic cook-up [10]
- E - C - S - I - N

Some asking for cover [4]
- - - N

Teas, in essence, contain a sense of lack of strain [8]
E - S - N - - -

What a state to be in if I jingle! [4]
F - - -

Study fair and put right again [8]
R - A - - - - -

Main element or fastener [6]
- - - P - R

They're probably pretty obvious to you smarty-pants, but the more I look at them, the dafter the clues seem.
Any ideas? If l win, l'll split the prize money with anyone who helps...

Rob, I wouldn't go with my answers... don't they do easy clues any more?

I have decided that the answer to the second clue is "PERCUSSION".

Purely because it's an anagram of "supersonic", and also fits your letters. I have no idea what it has to do with kitchens, though.

Yes! Kitchens have kettles in them, and a kettle drum is a percussion instrument!

People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Sure, they're obvious once you know the answers...

I mean, I can read the answer, read the clue, and think "ah, that's what they meant".

Well, apart from the one which I actually got the answer to. I still don't understand the relevance of kitchens.

I was thinking clipper because "main" element means the answer could be something to do with the sea but as for kitchen...cook up means it's an anagram of supersonic but I don't know how that fits with kitchen...could just be a poorly designed clue...it happens.  All will be made clear when Roger and Fyodor waken up....they are the kryptic kings :-\

Some asking for cover [4]
- - - N

Teas, in essence, contain a sense of lack of strain [8]
E - S - N - - -

What a state to be in if I jingle! [4]
F - - -

Study fair and put right again [8]
ReAdjust

Main element or fastener [6]
- - - P - R

Can't be "Clipper" as that has too many letters.

ZIPPER
PROPER

Hmm... "No idea" is "Blind Bambi".

"Give up" could be"Ghost"?

Looking good, thanks everyone. As Jack says, some of them are pretty obvious when you see the answers.

So, just two remaining:-

Main element or fastener [6]
- T - P - R
Now with an extra letter..

Kitchen with supersonic cook-up [10]
- E - C - S - I - N
I have decided that the answer to the second clue is "PERCUSSION".

I too thought percussion, but the clue can't be that tenuous, can it?

Rounders-player reverses the summit [8]
BACKSTOP
I still can't see how that was worked out. What's the summit bit?

What a state to be in if I jingle! [4]
FIJI
Fiji fits, but is it a state?
