You all seem to have travelled around a bit, so where's this?

I'm fairly sure it isn't Grimsby.

So if you're going to Lisbon, you should go to the loo before you head out.

Congrats, Malc.  I thought it was impressive, especially the map of the world in front of the monument.

Tag, you're the next photo inputter, Malc.

It's moderately impressive... until you notice the guy sat at the base of it, whereupon it becomes massively impressive.

It kind of reminds me of the 'Forward' statue I saw in Birmingham in 1999...

It's not as big though.

Sadly, it burned down...

That was truly an ugly monument.

It looked odd, but I actually got to like it after seeing it nearly every day.

I had wallpaper like that once, ugly as heck but grew on me in the end.

I quite like the statues near Faro airport in Portugal which show various figures looking skywards. It's probably got a lot to do with the fact that, if I can see them, I'm on holiday.

That "Forward" monument is truly awful. Bob The Builder is on it.

How did it burn down? Was it made of paper?

I've done some research into this...
It was made of fibre-glass. It was known locally as the Lurpak sculpture as it looked as though it was made of butter. Erected in 1991, it represented the city's early 1990s renaissance. A teenage arsonist destroyed it at 13.30 on Thursday 10th April 2003.

Coincidentally, that's todays date...

I'm fairly certain that today's date is actually Saturday 10th April 2010, and not Thursday 10th April 2003 as you claim.

Also, the blackened charred version in the third picture looks a bit more stylish than the original in my opinion. At least, it has more character. Of course, I don't condone arson, and I shudder to think of the fumes given off by the burning fibre-glass.
