As time goes by.
« on: May 07, 2011, 09:32:43 PM »
Every so often, it strikes me how long this silly strip has been going. Beau Peep is now well into its 33rd year. Back in 1978, when it was first published, Andrew and I were given a six-month contract and, to be honest, we had pretty much accepted that it wouldn't last any longer. We had achieved our ambition of getting a strip into a national newspaper so anything else was regarded as a bonus. Not for a second did either of us reckon on the longevity of this nonsense and I had no idea that it would help pay for my journey through life. (I first came up with the idea of Beau Peep in 1975 when I was 24 years old and I'll be 60 next month). I was amazed to learn that only something like 50 people in the U.K. make a living from full-time cartooning. As someone who loves everything to do with cartoons, I found this both shocking and depressing. Anyway, I'm one of those 50, so thanks for the support. "A Man Called Horace" has now been running for 22 years.
God, I'm old.

If there were just two more of you sucessful cartoonists we could do up a deck of cards with your pictures.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

We're only interested in being the jokers in the pack, Diane.

Roger, I have no objection to you feeling your age, but for goodness sake spare a thought for those of us who have travelled much of this journey with you. We don't all want to feel as old as you!

And in any case, you're far from over the hill. There's no reason you can't go on for another 20-30 months at least!
I apologise, in advance.

It did strike me how elderly you're starting to look when I saw you a few months back, Roger, but if it's any comfort to you, I cast it out of my mind.

Thank you, dear.
Because this is..um..a Beau Peep site, I feel obliged to mention the strip once in a while. The trouble is, the only thing I can think of saying is how bloody long it's been going and that makes me sound ungrateful. This is obviously not true---I am extremely GRATEFUL.
It has been running a bloody long time, though.

Yes, but how many people over these years have turned to the cartoon page of their paper to enjoy the fruits of your labour and to have a laugh despite the woes of their life (OK, that maybe sounds more depressing than I meant it to be...). But think, laughter is the best medicine so time doesn't matter, here's to the next decade of Beau Peep, and the next, and the next.

BRING BACK THE BOOKS!

There must be enough material for at least a dozen books by now.

Laughs, chuckles, or one of each?

Depends if you can get one to provide you with a laugh or a chuckle for 37p.

Oh, hang on... see above.
