BP Summer Book Club - your suggestions
« on: June 26, 2011, 06:07:33 PM »
Our leader has already made his suggestion in a different thread:
Quote
I also managed to find an incredible book for holiday reading and I recommend it without qualification. BLUE HIGHWAYS by William Least Heat-Moon. Written in 1983, it's a non-fiction account of one man's drive around the back roads of America and the people he meets on the way. He has a glorious way with words and, at one stage, describes an old man he sees sitting on a porch in Georgia "shaking his evening paper into obedience". Well worth reading.

I would like to put forth for your consideration: "The Help" http://www.kathrynstockett.com/ (and if you get the chance to listen to it on CD instead of reading it - do so because there are three great voice actresses reading the parts.
I just read Water for Elephants - too violent for me but a feel good story; I am currently on The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - I thought I would try a round of popular novels for a change. If you are not too cool to read children's fiction (age 8-12) the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series are the funniest LOL books I have read in years.

I just wikied that series Bill - the plot sounds complex - will you be reading the whole series now?

Down to the last three chapters, then its on to the next book.  I have the first 5 books on my Kindle (and ipad, iphone, pc apps) so I can read them anywhere.  I have not bought the 6th one as it is too expensive at the moment.

Have just watched the HBO series of the first book.  It is very close to the book, even down to some of the spoken parts.  The books are written from the viewpoints of various characters, one viewpoint per chapter.  This is quite readable and, once you understand the environment (completely unrelated to our history) and characters, Houses, etc, it all makes sense.  Wiki the books and read a synopsis of the storyline.  It's worth it.

Not a good idea - he made a right mess of his Kindle with the last one.
I apologise, in advance.
