I've often wondered the same thing, Malcolm. Given that Roger is a freelance writer, and can effectively work from anywhere, (given the power of email and the internet), in his shoes I'd be tempted to extend such sojourns to far longer than a week.

Mind you, it wouldn't be easy to watch Dundee United from such a distance.
Nostalgia is not what it used to be. 😟

Nah, I wouldn't want to live in Portugal---or Montana, for that matter. For me, the joy of these places, which I dearly love, is the mental relaxation that comes with NOT working.  It would be a whole different story if I was having to write for a living while staying there. The pleasure comes from switching off my brain for a week and enjoying the scenery, the beer and eating out most nights.
I'm very happy here in Scotland but I often wonder what would have happened if I'd discovered Montana earlier in my life. I feel completely at home there and love everything about it----the history, the jaw-dropping scenery and the friendliness of every single person I've met there. Next April, I'm heading out again. A couple of nights in Denver, then off to Montana and Wyoming for a week of  touring. Bliss.
