I hate some modern words.
« on: March 29, 2012, 05:10:03 PM »
When I read or hear words like "physicality", "theatricality" etc. You know the ones where people seem to add an "-ality" to any word of their chosing to tart it up a bit. This irks me.

I started to read a novel set in WWI and they used the phrase in the prologue: "...the physicality of air and earth..." and moderness of the word slapped me in the face and put me off reading the book.

I'm not a picky person but this "-ality" craze needs to be stomped out.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

I wouldn't normally share this kind of thing but I suspect this forum is one of the few places where I can safely assume there will be no token sympathies expressed [now you're screwed, the slightest hint of said sympathy and you're a "tokenist" - for Roger].

I've had two heart attacks, and am [almost] doing my best to avoid a third, that's for information.   What I hate is something I imagine you have all experienced, you know that moment when you lay your head on a pillow, and through some form of sound resonance you can hear your heart beating quite loudly?  I never used to bother about it, but now I move my head until I can't hear it any more.

It's gotten so bad I've stopped using a pillow when I drive...

Sorry, just realised an added bonus, I've probably screwed with the sleeping pattern of anyone who reads my previous post...how cool is that!

Nah! You haven't screwed with my sleeping pattern; I usually sleep like the dead. The kids have instructions to use a mirror if they can't wake me!

In reality there aren't many words ending in "-ality", but you won't stop them - they have a kind of immortality.

How do you say "reality" without using "ality" other than "real" that is?

American criminals appear to get "lawyered up" before answering any questions. Aargh.

It wouldn’t be quite so bad if they kept modern sayings in stories set in the present but when they use time marking words from a different period it just sounds wrong. Would we want to read about Louis the groovy, far out Sun King? Would we want to read about how Al Capone got lawyered up?
