Idea For Childrens Book
« on: July 20, 2013, 11:22:53 PM »
My idea fo a kids picture book, which I will write, illustrate, write the feem toon, sing the feem toon, etc consists of a monster who leaves one morning on his bike and spots a giant floating in the sky.
They enter into a conversation, and the giant reveals he ate all the beans and filled with gas and now can't help but float in the air.

The denouement will involve the monster tying a rope from his bike to the giant's forefinger, before pedalling off at high speed, and pulling the finger in time-honoured fashion, releasing the trapped wind and allowing the giant to descend to earth.

Or something. I haven't writ the last bit.

The first bit goes like this - what do you think, is it kid's fodder?

In a house in the woods, lived a monster called Mike

Who loved nothing more than to pedal his bike.

One day as he rode. Looking up through the trees

He a saw a large giant, afloat on the breeze.

“A giant up there?  I have never seen that”

Said Mike, “I’ve seen birds, or a kite or a bat”

“But never a giant up there flying around,”

“They belong on the earth, they belong on the ground!”

“Hey, you!” called the giant, “Hey you, with the teeth!”

“Can you help me get there to that place down beneath?”

“Don’t know much about giants and flying and stuff”

Said Mike “but I’ll help, if you tell me enough”.

“When I ate all the beans, I got so full of air”

That I floated right up, now I’m blown here and there”

Cried the giant, as his eyes filled with giant tears –whoosh!

They fell like huge water bombs, sploosh, sploosh, sploosh!

“Don’t cry!” shouted Mike, “or you’ll flatten the plants”

“and soak all the squirrels and drown all the ants”

....to be cont'd.

Love it---and this is the kind of subject matter that all kids love. Knowing your cartooning style as I do, this would have huge visual appeal. The verse is excellent, too. Go for it, Malc.

Having only experience from the end-user point of view, my comments can only ever be limited, but may I say that I love the "steam train" rhythm of the writing (always good for building up excitement for the little 'uns) and that from just one reading the images form easily, which must be good as well. It's something I could easily foresee on a bookshelf and exactly the type of book I would have bought myself for the kids.

Will the ants survive? I'm rather worried for them now...   :'(

And then maybe a little Boy George?

I'm trying to put the design of the giant on to a word press page, so I can upload it to here, but nothing's going right, NOTHING *sob*...

or the giant could fart and shoot both himself and the monster, on the bike tied to his finger, to the moon.

That's probably a bit far-fetched, Diane...  ..0

Yes you’re right again Nige, unless the monster was knock-kneed, the bike would probably drop to the ground.

Not that I think you're an intentionally nasty man Malc, but are you theming this story around a cyclist just to show Andrew how easy it is to draw a bicycle?

Worse, I've changed the bike to a trike and the monster's name from Mike to Spike. Us great poets are always refining our verse.

If he's that unsure of his balance, I hope you're going to draw him with a large helmet, befitting of a monster.   :o

Yes of course.
