At a course today, this cartoon (Mike Adams-www.NaturalNews.com) was used as an example by an English Literature Tutor, to get an opinion on various things including:
Purpose of the cartoon?
Message of the cartoon?
Is it an effective method of delivering the message?
What is the cartoonists attitude towards what the humans are doing to the planet?
Did the cartoonist achieve his purpose?
Feel free to comment, or not as the case may be, on any of the above.
My difference of opinion came with the communal "How?" speech bubble. I felt it showed the excited anticipation of the world (symbolised by the happy faced crowd speaking in unison) at a possible solution to the problem, which then got turned to dismay at the realisation of how it would be achieved (symbolised by the crowds sad faces and the smug grins of the aliens). Others disagreed.
The aliens I took to be the representation of an unattainable "cure", ready to be eagerly grasped, others saw them as the cartoonist's viewpoint.
I felt quite smart today.
