Movie Theatres

Our nearest town with a movie theatre is 50 minutes away. It is a newly built mom & pop outfit that shows a few movies right on their opening date, but mostly a couple of weeks behind. But it is such a cute little place with things in it that you wouldn’t see in a big chain movie theatre like the owners movie memorabilia displayed in a cabinate. They now have two screens, their old place had one screen and one loo and when we first moved up here their movies were about 3 months behind. 

It got me wondering how many of these privately owned places can there be left in the world?

There have been a few cinemas recently (3 that I know of in Scotland in the last 2 years) where groups of individuals have raised money to bring old places back to their former glory and now show up-to-date films but your "family run" place sounds lovely.

Your 50-minute trip reminds me of my life before I moved 2 years ago.  One of my pleasures now is to only need 10 minutes to see the latest offerings...."Gravity" and "Euphemia" recently.

Couldn't tell you the last time I went to the cinema! Does my head in! Why do people pay to watch a
film then talk and eat all the way through it being a real pain in the arse for everyone else!!

Egg, maybe you should go to the movies with Sandy; that way people will steer clear enough of the both of you not to bother you with their inconsiderate chatter and munching.

Diane, there's apparently a large bus that goes round the Scottish Highlands, showing reasonably recent film releases to some of the smaller, more remote communities. I'm pretty sure the bus remains stationary while the film's on.

I think it’s nice that people save old movie theatres.  Some of them were really beautiful. I wish I lived closer and would do a movie tour holiday. 

We don’t see very many movies at the theatre unless they are special - they are so soon to DVD these days and I can get them free from the library.

But I do like to buy a few DVDs for holidays. I am trying to think of what to get for this Christmas holidays right now – it is hard to find things that appeal to everyone in the family. One of the best Christmas vacations we had was when I bought a few series of “Corner Gas” – we stayed in of jammies and watched episode after episode.  The kids are all too old for that kind of show now though. 

Any suggestions as to what movies would appeal to two clever Uni boys and a conservative middle-aged farmer?

I would hope so...you wouldn't know where you would end up. Put Lord Of The Rings on and you could end up in Basingstoke.

I bought a few super hero movies last Christmas as they were a great deal on Amazon – one was Thor. (I liked Captain America too) The boys got together in the city and went and saw Thor2 and I doubt it would be out on DVD in time for the holidays.

I love watching movies in Australia. The multiplexes seem to be empty when I go, and I often have the theatre to myself.

I've gone (on occasion) when the cinema was full-ish and the behaviour wasn't too bad, though it is obvious that the modern generation have no idea of how to behave in company - they act as though they are in their own front room.

One story that came to me second hand from a couple of friends, was of a group of teenagers who had been making a nuisance of themselves throughout the beginning of the main movie, totally disregarding the fact that there were about a hundred other movie-goers trying to watch the flick. Somebody launched a full carton of coke at them and it smacked one right in the face. The movie was stopped, ushers and management appeared, no-one identified the thrower, various people stood up and denounced the teenagers, listing their crimes, teenagers were all escorted out and the movie resumed.

As the Aussies say: Swoit.

You have to understand that this young generation will never learn anything by throwing Coke at them…they are the Pepsi generation.

Evesham has The Regal (theregal.ac) which is a recently fully refurbished art deco old style cinema and a great experience.
