Fancy going to a top notch university?
« on: September 04, 2014, 06:01:00 AM »
A friend on Facebook posted a link to free courses you can take at famous universities in the USA. I had a look around some of them do require you to buy textbooks; some don't.

Roger, here's an interesting one for you:

https://www.edx.org/course/columbiax/columbiax-hist1-1x-civil-war-2241#.VAfv9vldV8E

There is something there for everyone from what looks like courses starting at a two hour commitment a week.

How about this be the year we all get poshly smart?

Funnily enough, we had a conversation recently where he admitted he knew more about the American Civil War than either of us did about the English one!

Roger is in Montana at the moment returning 8 September so hope he won't be too late to enrol for that course.....

I think that one starts on the 17th Lil

I am looking at the science of happiness course - it already has 90K people enrolled so that teacher is going to get a lot of apples  :)

Wow - what a lot to choose from. I failed to find a course about the history and development of the X-Men however, but I guess the idea is to learn something new. So I'm (seriously) considering two at the moment. It's safe to say, I haven't learned anything in nearly 40 years, so I guess it's time I bettered myself. Can't decide between 'The Science Of Everyday Thinking' and 'Introduction to Philosophy: God, Knowledge and Consciousness'. Eeny, meeny, miny, mo......
I apologise, in advance.

Damn ! I fancied "The Study of Folklore" taught by Juan Wang (well, who would need two), but it's taught in Mandarin and I only like Tangerines.  Shame.

My uni starts back a fortnight. The dread builds.   :'(

Just back from Montana/Wyoming and still more than a bit jet-lagged. I waved across the border to Diane but she ignored me. As always, I had a wonderful time and a trip through the Bighorn mountains was simply stunning. The scale and splendour of these States is mind-numbing (Scotland could fit into Montana eight times) and the people are ridiculously friendly. Having said that, I wouldn't like to get on the wrong side of the people in Cody, Wyoming, who posted the following sign on their premises...
"If you're found here at night, you'll be found here in the morning". This was accompanied by a photo of a gun.
Have a nice day.

Are they friendly to everyone or just world class rockstar-cartoonists?

It seems to be more about the Scottish accent, Diane. On hearing where I came from, a lady store-owner in Billings, Montana, insisted that I give her a "high five". My limp, rather embarassing attempt barely flicked her proffered palm and I nearly knocked over her display of Yellowstone Valley Candies with my followthrough.

Hope you enjoyed your trip Roger!   The Star or Mirror should have commissioned you to write a travel review for their Saturday editions (it appears most of their reporters get free holidays by doing that!).  Or you could always put in an expense claim for 'research' for Horace... ;)

I should mention, that I never even started the happiness course. I joined a FB group for the course and found many of the posts to be irritating.

So in a way I made myself happy by not participating. :-) Things you learn as you get older.
