Job news
« on: March 08, 2015, 06:50:47 AM »
After all these years of just being a farmer and dog breeder and homeschooling parent and volunteer - I now join the ranks of the employed (paid).

I did a 5 week online tax course with the country's leading tax preparation company only to last three days in the real world as a "Tax Professional". It was only slightly less depressing than working down a coal mine - and I imagine down a coal mine you could actually get to stop working while trying to eat your cheese sandwich. Fortunately they tried to diddle me on the hourly rate so that was a good reason not to sign the soul-sucking contract of employment.

But now I have yet another new opportunity. Our local weekly paper sadly closed down after 50 years. One of the reporters decided to start up her own bi-weekly (at first) venture on a smaller scale - well she phoned me up and offered me the job of "reporter". I love to take photos as you know, so this may well be a great little job for me. I am reading up on AP writing style as I hope to do a good job of it. I will cover mostly local interest stories.

You don't expect life to hand you new adventures when you're 50 do you.  :)

People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Congratulations, Diane. I'm delighted to hear the tax job didn't work out - the newspaper one sounds infinitely more fun and worthwhile. I'm sure you'll do full justice to their decision to take you on.

I got my current job with Britain's biggest national daily newspaper out of the blue at the age of 52. Always expect the unexpected!

Have fun!  :D
I apologise, in advance.

Good luck with your new journalistic career, Diane. Knowing the energy you always put into all your projects, I can see you being a Press Baron within the year!

Thank you both, I think it will be fun going out there - I am trying to figure out how to set myself up for standing up interviews on the go with notepad, pens, camera, tripod, easy access to an extra lens maybe a tape recorder, back up pens, batteries not to mention all the girly stuff I already tote about with me. I am thinking I may need to buy some cargo pants and practice grabbing a lens from a pocket and doing a change while walking.

At least I have always had the ability to tuck a pen behind my ear and keep it there so I am not starting from zero skills.

Good luck Diane!   Now, I wonder where your paper could acquire some decent cartoon strips?   ;)

I'm not sure that rural Albertan's would understand the humour of Beau Peep.  They are friendly and smiley people but what they laugh at is pretty lame.

When we were first married my husband pretended to like Beau Peep, but it turns out in reality he just liked to see my boobs jiggle when I laughed at them.

So there's no reason why not then?  ;D

I think there may be a "Tell-Diane-a-Joke" competition soon... :o

I may use this as a promotion for the next Beau Peep book.

I'm not sure you fully appreciate the power of those words, Diane - or perhaps you do. Henceforth, there will not be one strip written by Roger where he does visualise this acid test of his writing skills, and all punchlines will be measured against each other with the Jiggle Factor to the fore.

I just hope Mrs Kettle doesn't read this thread, or there may be a few slaps ahead...
I apologise, in advance.

Along with my bio, I have my first 4 stories lined up.

One I already did which was a bit cheeky really as it is a story with me in it. I taught the last class in a 6 part international cooking class put on by the town recreation department so I did that story with a fun photo of us all in our aprons. Then coming up, I have the regional speaking competition for a rural youth group (4-H), then I have the recital for the kid's ice dance and then I have the high school musical. I almost got the scoop on some UK soldiers over here that one of my elderly neighbours teaches winter survival and tracking skills to, but my boss already got that one.

I am having a great time. I made myself a press badge as that seemed the only way I was going to get one...
