What an election...
« on: May 08, 2015, 05:55:41 AM »
...said the actress to the...sorry, wrong joke.   On the big island next door to mine the Liberal Democrats just got theirs handed to them on a plate, visions of Nick Clegg doing a "Kate Winslet" and the LibDems doing a "Titanic".   North of the border there was even worse blood letting with the Scottish National Party taking names and not taking prisoners.   Almost worth staying up all night for, now the fuss can die down and the politicians can go back to reneging on all the pre-election promises...   I may start a rumour about a Scottish "Suez" style canal stretching along the actual Scottish border, given Hadrian's wall missed.

Another five years of Posh Lad. But if Nicola can multi-task (and she can), there's another three leaderships currently up for grabs.
I apologise, in advance.

Without being overly political about the whole thing, this election does resemble a version of political dominoes, three party leaders resigning, one having failed to actually get elected, buckets of senior statesmen heading for the dole office, Karma is going to need a few days off after this lot.

For once I am glad I live on a tiny island next door to the big boys, where we rarely elect complete idiot...well at least we have a well balanced...oh...I'll get my coat, someone switch the lights off...

A truly remarkable election. The astonishing SNP surge was. I'm sure, because of Cameron's back-tracking on his pre-referendum promises but the scale of it was way beyond anything I had expected.
And has there ever been a triple resignation of party leaders before? Despite it all being quite interesting, we're still left with the posh idiots. Should be good for a few new wars.

It seems unlikely that three party leaders have resigned on another occasion, there were certainly a number of rather unique events in this election, the SNP landslide, which may turn out not to be quite so good as it seems, the virtual disappearance of the LibDems, although that shouldn't have come as such a great shock to them, they never really recovered from back-tracking on student fees. that was more damaging than anything else they did during the coalition.

Also the more than usually visible demonstration of voting system anomalies, UKIP and the Green Party got about five million votes between them, and ended up with one seat each, the SNP got about one and a half million votes and ended up with 56 seats.

The problem for the SNP is that with the posh gits having a majority in the House [albeit a small one] the SNP has very little, if any, bargaining power, part of their success was based on their anti-austerity platform but they needed a Labour victory or a hung parliament to make good on those policies, unfortunately Labour missed the train.

But every cloud has a silver lining...my headache's largely gone.

And what, exactly, do we all think is going to change now, with the countries new political map?

Any offers?

Any offers?

Well I'm not an expert or anything but...

1   The Scots will line the East and West coastlines of Scotland and start rowing, eventually there will be a large "squeak" and Scotland will indeed by fully independent and with it's own moat

2   Sadly Wales will be swamped by the tidal backlash from the fierce Scottish rowing, many sheep will be lost, songs will be sung [of course]

3   The English will discover the new moat to the North three months later, by accident, when Mr and Mrs Wilkinson-Smythe of Buckinghamshire, on route to their "hideaway cottage" in the hills surrounding Helensburgh, are sadly drowned on failing to notice the stop sign, to be fair though it was on the Scottish side of the moat

4   Isle of Man residents will maintain their traditional stance at all the shenanigans, a stance which lies midway between apathy and a coma...

That's my best guess anyway

Excellent appraisal, Red. Have you ever considered a career within the world of elections?

We had a provincial election in Alberta on Tuesday. For one time, the first-past-the-post system worked in favour of a leftist party. First socialist party that Alberta has seen in 85 years! I thought times they were a-changing and people were finally waking up and voting in their own best interests worldwide. Maybe it was just a fluke.

My own riding swung the other way and went to the crazy Wildrose (Like the USA Tea Party) - I had to cover it for the paper "without being political"  ..0

Odd how socialism reared it's head in relation to both your comments, albeit one indirectly, I suspect I am one of the few remaining socialists on this little rock of ours, my [very] short political "involvement" ended when I suggested to a certain local political party that it might be a good idea to promote equality for homosexuals, given their activities were illegal here at the time, purely on the basis that equality is generally considered a good thing, however I was advised to make a discreet exit.   It took about another ten years before it actually happened.

Sadly I came to the conclusion long ago that socialism is the very best political system there is...so long as you don't involve humans.   It espouses opportunity, equality, fairness, justice, generosity of both heart and spirit, which are all great until more than one human signs up and then you also get ambition, inequality, greed, injustice, meanness of both heart and spirit, which are all not so great.

I have not lost all heart however, I am working on a manifesto for a new political party, which fundamentally will seek election on the principle of voting both itself and the current government structure out of office [and existence] as soon as possible, I anticipate as much success as socialism and the dodo.
