Different types of music?
« on: November 29, 2015, 12:52:12 PM »
Andrea Bocelli said a few years ago that "there was too much music", his main point being that with the advent of music in so many places around us, the value of music was being diluted, that the power of music was being lost in the minutiae of every day life.  He was right, and he was wrong.

He was right in that we can lose track of the music so it literally disappears, I suspect I am not the only one to start playing an album, get engrossed in work and realise later that the album stopped playing, all I actually heard were the opening minutes of the first track.

And he was wrong, because there a moments, too few for me lately but, there are moments when I can listen to a piece of music and just get lost in it, and come away from it feeling a whole lot better than I did beforehand.

There was a friend, back in the day, that I was always a tad jealous of, he had a sort of photographic memory, only it was for sound rather than data, he claimed that he only had to hear a song once and he could recreate the whole thing in his head at any time.   No proof available of course, except anecdotal, but having seen him "lost" in the music many times I would hazard the opinion he was experiencing the same I do, only I actually have to hear it every time.

My father had many talents, sadly most were immoral or illegal, but he could hear a song once, and then play it on the piano well enough that you could sing along to it, a sort of pre-karaoke karaoke if you will.

I like it quiet most of the time. Is that weird.

Most people have the radio or even TV on in the background when they are home alone - I like to hear the tapping of the keypad.
People will come from strange lands to hear me speak my words of wisdom. They will ask me the secret of life and I will tell them. Then maybe I'll finish off with a song. The Nomad

Not weird at all, right now my house is empty [other than me] and there is absolute quiet, that's why I think I kind of agree mostly with Bocelli, a little less music all the time probably does help give music a little more appreciation when you do listen, plus I'd rather choose the music than have it selected for me.   Musicians have explored silence also, most recently John Cage with 4'33" or Yves Klein's Monotone-Silence Symphony [both of which I completely fail to comprehend or understand].  Enjoy your quiet.

I believe that whilst most people like music, there are very few who listen to music. I have had this discussion before, and been called many things for my attitude. Let me explain.

I am someone who will get goosebumps listening to certain songs. Not even full songs though, one note, one phrase or one harmony will enthrall me. I defy any Scot (or other national mibbe) to listen to Amazing Grace by the Royal Scots Dragoons, and not be moved to near tears at about 58 secs when the main pipes kick in...what a sound! I also listen presently to a lot of "acapella". There are voices like Marvin Gaye, Adele, Barbra Streisand et al, who can deliver notes with such beauty that you realise how special and gifted these people are. I admit to getting "lost" in the music.

Now for the pompous part. I think that the majority of people don't hear music in that way. They love the general sound of music. They enjoy it playing as a distraction or as an ambience, or for whatever reason. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all. But they do listen to it on a different level.

So what's my point?

I think your statement is accurate Red, he was wrong and right. I don't believe there is too much music, but I do believe it is woefully diluted. I would ban the "talent" shows. I dislike them greatly. They are part of the problem. You don't need to serve an apprenticeship anymore. Get your mug of the right show, get the right promo work done, and bobs your uncle.

Give me a street musician any day! He's either music through and through, or trying to make a few quid from his talent. At least he's live!

I realised the other day that I can hum the incidental music in every episode of the Good Life.

Listen to the music for the section at 17m 25s, and just know that I know it note for note, off by heart.

I have to agree on the Amazing Grace thing, we Manx may be a mixed breed these days but there's enough Celt still there to appreciate the pipes, and it reminded me there is at least one thing you can do whilst still getting the full benefit of the music...marching, in fact they may even enhance each other.

The Royal Scots Dragoons? My dad likes them and my mum can't stand them, but he plays them in the car, and one day on the way to B&Q this one played. This is the kind of music to inspire one to write.
