Pointless Poetry
« on: December 01, 2015, 11:57:17 AM »
In college we used to give each other ten random words and ask for a poem that sounds meaningful and deep but on serious examination is clearly pretentious twaddle.

For example:

  • harassed
  • fiddle
  • facade
  • ambient
  • giant
  • table
  • bounce
  • carpet
  • ribbon
  • slab

Can the ambient bounce of ribbon on carpet,
Drown out the giant noise of a slab on a table?
Or is all this just a facade like a fiddle harassed?
Think about it for a moment. Are you able?

Anyone else want a go?

Funniest thing I've read in ages! You went to college?
I apologise, in advance.

No, I was in a college. It usually lasts about a week or two before people start asking questions.

Aren't they always? They think knowing their stuff instantly equates to knowing how to teach it.

Tarquin cannot think: his mind equates instantly to
The pride of knowing nothing. How did no one
Teach him? They must have thought the same
as me: Stuff him, the twit!

I used to do the same but it was Hospitals, until the restraining order kicked in.

Bugger, I apparently like pretentious twaddle.   On a tangent however isn't this a bit woods/tree falls/scream/no-one around sort of thingy? [I added the scream to be a pretentious rebel, clearly got my groove on]   Or perhaps one man's art is another man's pretension.

Beauty lies in the beholder, there are some "art" pieces I just don't understand, and never will, but I hold off on panning them completely because many others can clearly "see" something I can't.

Remember those pictures that became the vogue a long will back, I think they called them stereograms or something, the idea being if you stared at it long enough you could make out "a picture within a picture", all I ever got was a headache.

I'm a sucker for words, I like reading them, writing them and saying them, and given I am a miserable git who generally avoids any kind of social occasion, that's saying something [play on the word thing - totally rad huh?].

The 3D images contained within them are real: I've seen them. A lot of them now come with two helpful dots at the top of the page that you have to merge together with your eyes to see the image.

Yes - Magic Eye pictures they call them. You can only see them if you're a naked emperor.

Actually, after a long time of pretending I saw them, I finally relaxed my eyes enough to find the right focus, and the effect is rather startling. I have no idea how they work, but it's very, very clever, and I really enjoy 'finding' them now.

Finding merit in this, however, is a quite different matter.  :\

As Poet Laureate of Beau Peep for the next twelve months [count them and weep, Roger...what have you done] I should point out that you have, subconsciously perhaps, equated Tarks with Socrates...

"I am the wisest man alive, for I know one thing, and that is that I know nothing"...

Which is a very sweet thing for you to have done...well done!

Yes, but Socrates was not proud of it as Tarks is.

'Twit' wasn't on the list, and yet your entire poem (I use the word as loosely as prune juice will allow) relies solely upon it. Desperate, desperate stuff!

That Socrates knew his onions! Probably Brazil's greatest captain, as well as its wisest.
I apologise, in advance.
