So now, in addition to not eating meat, fish, eggs and dairy (low in antioxidants and nutrients; high in saturated fat and cholesterol, viruses, superbugs, and industrial pollutants such as mercury, dioxins, neurotoxins, arsenic, DDT, PCB’s), I have now decided to go SOS-free, which means no added salt, no added oil, and no added sugar. I'm looking forward to getting my taste buds back.

It's an interesting process, learning how much of what one does is unnecessary habit. At Christmas, for example, I could murder a whole tin of Quality Street, whereas now I won't touch it because it's milk chocolate. But then there's sherbet and candy and Skittles and bonbons: but I think I'm 'training' myself to see them as powdered or coloured sugar cubes, so I am now succeeding in avoiding them. Cranberry flapjacks are another vice, but I stopped eating those once I realised how much oil was in them. And then there are biscuits . . .

Actually, I believe the proposed law is a little more complicated than the dumbed-down version given in sensational tabloids, and it's one that I have no problem with. Average vegan diets tend to be deficient in three nutrients: calcium, iodine and B12. Average omnivore diets tend to be deficient in seven nutrients: calcium, fibre, folate, iodine, magnesium, vitamin C and vitamin E. Whatever diet you bring your children up on should be a healthy one, and that always requires educating yourself.

I don't entirely agree with Sandy's last point, but it is a good point. Most people's bodies can cope with quite a lot, although that should never be an excuse to abuse yourself to any extreme with excessive intakes of generally accepted unhealthy foods.

A little of what you fancy, however, actually does you good, and even the occasional guilty pleasures, so long as they don't harm others, make life disproportionately more enjoyable.

No doubt this is lazy and incorrect thinking, merely used to justify my sins.

That is quite true: the problem is knowing when you're getting into abuse.

A little of what you fancy, however, actually does you good, and even the occasional guilty pleasures, so long as they don't harm others, make life disproportionately more enjoyable.

Though I have not adopted a mostly vegan diet for ethical reasons, does the 'harm others' extend to animals? As for a 'little of what you fancy', again I agree but within limits.

I've spent a good proportion of my life rationalising and lying to myself to justify my sins. I thought I would spend at least one or two being honest with myself, seeing what I am capable of. I've made some headway, but to be honest, not much. :)
